Does everyone really want a RedBull helmet?

  • After seeing Ronan Dunne get a RedBull lid over the weekend it got me thinking, how does this actually work, they make it a surprise by getting another RedBull athlete (Matt Jones) to give Ronan the helmet but make it seem like there has been no talks prior to this happening.
It would be quite awkward if you were in talks with another helmet sponsor and this happened at a large event like this.
Do you guys know how this works?

Getting the helmet is a surprise in a sense of WHEN you get it, he's already signed with redbull and is their athlete at that point, so the only surprise is the actual timing of when he gets the helmet, nothing more.

Looking at the positive, the DH racing is incredible right now, visually at least coverage is as good as its been, and I think Red Bull is expanding Hardline for not having the World Cups - so we get more of both (juniors in DH and Maydena in Hardline).
And I am sure the semis will be going.

Red bull takes care of their athletes when they get injured. Eg when Danny Macaskill hurt his back badly a few years ago, RB paid for his full rehab in their american HQ, paid for all the medical bills, flights, accommodation, insurance etc.
I would assume that when RB gives a helmet publicly, negotiation have started way in advance and the athelete knows it's about to happen.
RB also sponsors athletes with long contracts. You never see an athlete with RB just for a year or two. They usually work hand in hand for years to support the athlete and push them as much as possible.

Riders can submit CVs to Red Bull to be sponsored, so they know in advance.
Red Bull (and Monster) will speak to managers, how much athletes are involved in the process will depend on whether they need to agree the contract - Jackson's was agreed with parents (managing him at the time) so who genuinely knew nothing about it. Other times, the athletes know it's coming but they don't know when - the presentation is the surprise - one of the female Monster riders said the same.
Why they want it? Red Bull is amazing with support - medical, the riders really get looked after, they also have team camps (which Ronan was on in Queenstown, so be interested to know if it was locked in then), and then sponsorship, plus it's that badge of, you're at the top of your game.
Monster by comparison, I've heard it described as they give more sponsorship money but don't have the same support.
The above info came from hundreds of podcasts and TH-cam videos like this, so thanks for the content Dean!

Can the spotlight on one rider create a team imbalance? And I'm sure a load of better questions you'd think of.

Just to add to this great description, most of the newer guys have a yearly salary of around £35k a year(this can vary quite a lot but is a rough ball park for the lower end figure) but they get all the medical support for free and the more free ride oriented guys get a yearly budget for filming/travel to certain events and then you can leverage how well your response is to get individual projects( Matt Jones being the prime example of this model). Monster usually has a much higher salary to be competitive to Redbull but it’s kinda seen in the Moto side as well but Redbull is mostly more serious and want their athletes to come across more clean cut where Monster is a bit more “loose”

Good question. BK’s such a pro with sponsorship isn’t he? Leatt are all about safety and he’s all out easily the best, most consistent and progressive Hardline rider over time who’s also doing good work coaching the ladies. And whilst the complexity of when the contract’s agreed is a ‘thing’ that’s part of answering your question, we can look at other recent events for an answer. Sam Pilgrim has just walked away from Monster - must be him walking away as he’s hands down one of their primo effective advertisers to a wide audience (multiple age groups, cross discipline in cycles, but also surfing, kites and jet skis and still competing in ‘Gold’ comps and getting into the top ten. So, what was going on there? Money, no doubt, but did Canyon insist he dropped Monster or did Sam choose to walk away from that vibe? Interesting stuff, thanks 🙏

    • @jamisonr
      @jamisonr 27 วันที่ผ่านมา

The answer is simply money. Either Sam wanted more, or Monster didn't think it was a good fit anymore. Sam used to be sponsored by Magura. They stopped sponsoring him because it wasn't enough exposure for the brand for them, not because he wasn't "good anymore." They probably wanted racing. Regarding BK, I have specifically thought he made a decision to not go down the RB or Monster path. Winning Hardline those 3 times, surely the opportunity was there? Maybe the Leatt sponsorship precludes it? It is just a paint job, it could still be Leatt helmet. I think there must be clauses in the contract BK finds objectionable and good on him if stood his ground on ethics.
