  • Welcome to YARNS; Conversations with Cruisers, A Sailing Podcast
James Frederick sits down with sailors he meets around the world to record their seas stories in remote anchorages and far-flung ports. All the interviews are recorded as a video podcast that is released on the Sailing Triteia TH-cam Channel. They are also being made available as an audio podcast for those who prefer this format of content.
On this episode I interview Lin Pardey and David Haigh onboard David’s 40-foot steel Van de Stadt sloop, Sahula. If you know anything about sailing, Lin needs no introduction. Her books have inspired millions of people to get out and see the world onboard small boats. She was one of the main reasons I thought this sailing dream, on a small boat with a limited budget. I had only just met David on the day of this interview but had done a bit a research on him ahead of time and read about his 11 year circumnavigation that was a combination of solo and short handed sailing taking him to unique places in the world, off the normal circumnavigation routes.

I am 71yr old and after listening to your guests I realize that I wish I learned about Sailing during my youth. I am considering sailing at my age and maybe I can have some of my own tales to tell. I don't think it is too late to start. I really enjoyed your program. Thanks.

Ah, really...! This was one of the great interviews that make this series, alone, a treasure for future sailors and adventurers to find. Recorded so casually, like an after-dinner conversation aboard, feeling the timeless rhythms of the sea, when words just seem to crystallize memories and learned wisdom to be passed on, ear to ear, heart to heart. What rang truest to me was the paring down that must happen, and then the commitment that follows - whether in choosing a boat, a lifestyle, outfitting - in cruising or in trekking. Finding the "raw;" making it happen; finding the people (not just the sceneries) that turn memories into our history. Deep thanks, Lin and David, and thanks, James, for dedicating your channel so wisely to all this.

Read a lot of Pardey literature over the last 4 decades. Good to see Lin is sharp as a tack and still living her best life. Onya Dave for being key to her later life.

Although I appreciated the talk and knowledge and will consider the points, in one breath it’s “no guns and don’t be afraid”, then it’s “we wanted security”, based upon fear of attack. Living with shooting someone wouldn’t be easy, but then risking your crew’s safety is also a problem (from both having firearms or not having them on board). Arguments for and against gun based security are both important to consider. Also realizing the benefit from some of the 26 boats possibly being armed bleeds over to all boats in the rally.

“Please don’t shoot me” imagine your sailing security plan is contingent upon begging for your life from pirates and hoping they decide not to rape/kill and only rob because carrying a gun and having a possible shootout is unacceptable. To each their own, but there are worse things than dying in a shootout.
