  • Welcome to YARNS; Conversations with Cruisers, A Sailing Podcast
James Frederick sits down with sailors he meets around the world to record their seas stories in remote anchorages and far-flung ports. All the interviews are recorded as a video podcast that is released on the Sailing Triteia TH-cam Channel. They are also being made available as an audio podcast for those who prefer this format of content.
On this episode I interview Dave & Jaja Martin about their wild life of sailing a modified Cal 25 around the world and starting a family during the circumnavigation. With the arrival of their third child they upgraded to a steel 33ft boat, Driver, and headed for the arctic where whey over wintered in the ice year after year living in Newfoundland, Iceland, and the Lofoten Islands of Norway.
This interview was a special treat because it was the first time I have interviewed two generations of sailors in the same family. Their daughter Holly Martin ‪@WindHippieSailing‬ was on the podcast back in June of 2023 : • YARNS : Holly Martin o...
Thanks again to the Martin Family for having me over to your beautiful home for dinner and to spin some yarns and thanks to Holly for making it happen.

Extraordinary. And Mrs Davis didn't bail. One in a billion. Best thing is, Mr Martin seems still to know exactly what he got himself into 35 years later. Holly and her siblings are one lucky bunch, to put it casually. Thank You, James, for putting in the effort of filming and bringing it all to us, and a special thanks to the Martin family for sharing thus openly.

    Back in the 90’s,
I had a sailing magazine with an article about the Martins. As a young man, I read it 100 times.
I sold everything and went sailing.

Really nice interview James. And a great concept you've hit on. Very fun. One of the qualities that attracts me to a TH-cam channel is are the people sympathetic?. Are they people I like? You've hit on a really nice way to"bring out" and talk to interesting, experienced and admirable people. Well done.

For me, this was one of the best episodes I have watched on your channel !! Absolutely awesome, James. Thank you for looking up Holly's parents, and doing the interview. it provides real insight into their fantastic life and career as cruisers and then on land. Holly is so lucky to have had such good parents ! I got so much out of this broadcast... and couldn't stop watching it. This filled in the blanks for me, and so eye-opening. All the best to you, James and looking forward to next episodes.

How did I miss this until now?? This is terrific, I can sense the "We figured it out,' in Holly's parents which, because Holly was raised in it, is in her, incredible confidence. The moment for me watching her videos was when Holly was doing a passage and "Oh, and ah, yesterday, my back stay parted, so I tied a rolling hitch.." Wait, what? How are you so relaxed? Terrific.

She knew "from scratch" how a sailing boat can take a lot (more than You'd initially think), as long as her sailor's aware of what they're doing, seamanship-wise. Imagine going with those two as parents when barely in walking-age as a kid. It brings out mindsets like Holly's.

There might not be any amount of "more seamanship" than being rocked by the waves on a tiny little boat already before birth I reckon 😁Should one believe in Karma and reincarnationism and all that: Imagine Holly's soul floatin' somewhere patiently waiting for _that_ kinda opportunity to start an earthling-life .... What a lucky girl!

Cal 25s are like bathtubs. I've sailed on them. They are very sensitive and constantly on their top-sides with any amount of wind - very uncomfortable to sail on. Gotta hand it to Holly's parents for enduring the lack of comfort for so long.

Such amazing life adventures! Thank you for sharing. I’ve watched several of Holly’s TH-cam videos and was always impressed with her adventurous spirit. Now I understand why Holly is such an accomplished young lady. I hope both Holly and James start writing short narratives of their solo sailing experiences that eventually become chapters in their own book. I just looked up the book, “Into The Light: A Family’s Epic Journey” by Dave and Jaja Martin. I’m glad you mentioned the book before the end of the video. Glenn Evans

this is a one of my favorites you have done. My partner and I live on our production boat saving up to "bulletproof" it. was the only boat we could afford. So stories like this always give me inspiration and confidence that "it is possible" and "you don't need all this fancy stuff".
You rallied off so many names of various sailors at the end its hard to hear and google them. (and try to spell them correctly) Any chance you could list them in the description or comments? Want more stories! Thanks for all you do!

Great interview, James. They all have been! I've been following you since I heard your interview on 59 degree North and it's been a wonderful and inspiration journey. Your travels and these great interviews you're doing is something I look forward to more than any sailing-related content on the internet, alongside Holly's who I started following thanks to a girl I met in the Galapagos who worked with Holly in Antartica. Thank you for all the hard work you put into it all. Thank you for keeping it real and bringing us along on your journeys. I am a new(ish) sailboat owner and you are certainly an inspiration. I look forward to reading your book of adventures one day. I wish you much happiness in your life.
