    Just made all my spawn myself sterilizer, transferred to sterilized fruiting bags, and just about ready to harvest my first batch. Has been a great first start and a fun journey. Don’t be intimidated folks, just do your research and go for it!!!

    i've been making mine (popcorn + coffee, except lions mane is liking wood pellets better) but also supplemented with a few purchases of spawn. (shout out to For Fungus Sakes!)
    10 pounds of spawn that i purchased lasted me 2 years and i am still multiplying out those original cultures and they are happy on my recycled cardboard megamix.
    i'm really liking the black king pearl strain that i recently picked up a liquid culture of. i have a depot bucket of them about to blast off on recycled cardstock, coffee grounds, and bran.
    i definitely saw a delay in spawn that i have had shipped, probably because of heat in the truck as you pointed out.
    liquid culturing might be my next foray.
    I'm just growing for myself though.

    I use mason jars to make liquid cultures. Some dribbled water when I positioned them to take a sample. In MCM videos I saw the dribbling too. The leakyness may be the reason that in the small vials the mycelium is O.K. but later not in the jars any more. As I am living in Thailand it was impossible to find a replacement for the mason jars, but what I found are additional silicone seals for the jars.

    I was a premade spawn guy. I just got an 8qt hotpot/pressure cooker . I hated putting out the 100 bucks but from here on out I'll make that up on three runs of qt jars.

  • @visionquestmushrooms5515

    Definitely make your own spawn. I feel it's cheating when people buy someone else's work and sell it as their own. I had a first time client/chef try to degrade me like that recently. In a very smarmy tone, he was like " Did you buy blocks someone else made and just grow them out"? I replied with a "No it's all my work". I showed him my Instagram and my work. That experience has led me to realize others see it the same way to. The chef did purchase, but that was a bad way to start.

      Going from LQ, to grain, to block, to harvest is quite satisfying.
      I'm at my 3rd successful harvest in a row, working out of a still air box with saran wrap for my viewing panel.
      If i can start doing blocks weekly, I might be able to make a buck or 2.
      I will say my first harvest was dehydrated then made into mushroom onion sliders.

      i wouldn't say it's cheating as almost every industry does something similar, but it is good to know how to work start to finish. Moss himself has been buying Shiitake fruiting blocks, because it isn't what he is set up to do at the moment.

    • @MartinFinn
      @MartinFinn ปีที่แล้ว

      Think of it as buying a young tomato plant and planting it in your garden vs. buying a pack of seeds. With a spore syringe you're trying to grow the mushroom from "seed".

    2 month i have been try making spawn without pressure cooker.. im on develop country its expensive..
    i tried to make liquid culture.. stem bud copy all failed with contamination (using cold pasteurization and steam pasteurization)
    i dont know what wrong.. i think i need still air box and do it again..
    its hard to get spawn here.. i hope someone can give some tips with me.. grain spawn is the hardest..

    • @mycominer
      @mycominer 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Really, you'll need a pressure cooker of some type or an autoclave. You can't really get liquid culture clean without one. You can cook agar in the microwave and I have done that before.

      You can get a 30L or 40L regular pressure cooker than runs at 8PSI or 9Kpa. Then run cycles of 4 to 5 hours n use popcorn and you are good to go. If you decide to follow my advice abs you buy a pressure cooker, I can help you get the set up right and learn to use it.

    • @wickedblessedmycology4392
      @wickedblessedmycology4392 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can make both without a pressure cooker. You just basically steam it long and hard. I have done it on the stove as well as in the oven in a pan of water and covered with foil to keep in humidity. It's not ideal so I have three pressure cookers now but it can and will work with practice.
