It's not that easy when you sell your soul to YT. That is the reason why most of successful creators are finding alternative way to finance themselves, so there are no longer depending on YT algorithm.
Vlogbrothers are a great example of the right approach to me. They've been around since the early YT days and they chose to keep making what they wanted to make and not so much optimising for the algorithm. They might not get as many views and as much money as they could but they enjoy what they do and have a thriving community. Maybe not the same situation as Barbs but it's food for thought

In order to pick up the pieces, start by being thankful for all you do have and all you have accomplished.
At age 42 I was beaten by someone randomly and ended up with a broken eye socket and damaged vision. At 59 I had a heart attack while jogging over a bridge.
I have had pneumonia twice in the last 5 years and had a knee replacement two years ago.
A year later I had a cut which became infected was hospitalized ficw days later with sepsis with my life on the line.
That said, I just turned 70 a few weeks ago and have recently started a great new job.
And, at the same I also joined a softball team and am 40 years older than some of my teammates!
Life is filled with all twists and turns. You are young and vital and have accmplished a lot already with great prospects for the future. Learn all the lessons from this that are implicit in this and then go on to your next venture.
You will continue to be a great guy. And a few million others think you are too.

1. I feel you. Back in 2020 I had 7 dudes break into my house while I was in and I couldn't do anything about it, they had guns and outnumbered me. They ransacked the house and the thing that hit me the most was them stealing my mom's heirloom from her adoptive parents, both of them long gone...
2. Geography now has NOT plateau'd. This has been my go-to geography channel since 2019 and I love your work. Don't give up and keep on pushing up because this channel is hands down the best geography channel in TH-cam

So sorry to see this 😔 been robbed a few times in my life and it’s a horrible feeling. The loss of meaningful items is one thing but the real pain is the uneasy feeling knowing someone was in your space and destroyed it all.
A few things:
1. We regularly take weeks off when we’re not feeling 100% and it’s ok. Come back stronger and recharged. Doesn’t need to be months off but a couple of weeks is ok.
2. You will bounce back from this.
3. TH-cam algorithm changes + shorts is hitting everyone. You will find a new rhythm, give it some time 🙏

I was 5 years old when I was returning home with my nanny and found our door kicked. They even stole a few DVDs... I wasn't able at the time to fully process what had happened but seeing my parents devasted gave it away even as a child. I really hope they find the perpetrators. I love your channel and all of your work. Nobody deserves this.

Hey dude. Fellow TH-camr here, listening to everything you mentioned about uploading and the competition. I 100% feel you, the exact same thing has happened to me, and I just wanna tell ya, it's totally fine. It feels like the walls are closing in on you, but in reality TH-cam, success, money and everything is all still there tmrw. You obviously work hard and are creative. It will come to you. Take that break. Relax and enjoy the slow parts of life as well. The hustle is always there, always can be revisited. There are up times and down times, fretting about them only makes everything worse. The struggle for eternal growth and success on these popularity algorithms is detrimental to EVERYTHING. In the end, it serves no one to chase the views. Stay true to yourself, cliche as it is, and just enjoy the ride.

It's a _Victimization._ This is how it feels to be Victimized. It leads to a loss of self-confidence, paranoia, and a deep feeling of insecurity. Events like this expose our thin veneer of denial (when it happened to "other people," we pretended it couldn't happen to "us") regarding our own vulnerability. A trauma that typically leads to a more jaded view of our fellow humans.

I am a Geography teacher and I have found your videos to be helpful in so many ways - sometimes I use them to help me prepare my own lessons - other times we watch part of the videos in class. So sorry for your tough times - we had a break in as well as a few years back. Sometimes its just time to move. We did that - picked up the whole family and moved and started over and while that will bring new challenges - it's been great and I am so thankful for it. Best wishes to you!

When I quit my job and got rid of 90% of my belongings to go nomadic and hit the road on a cross-country roadtrip… some scumbag in Seattle smashed my car window and stole my travel pack. With everything I had left, everything that mattered. It’s violating and it hurts on a level you didn’t previously comprehend, and I’m so so so so sorry this happened to you, and your mom. I’ve never commented on your videos before but I’ve been watching for years (you’re my go-to whenever I decide to visit a new country and want some fun intel!) Barbs; please don't undermine yourself, you've done something no one on TH-cam and possibly media has ever done. You have a very high number of fans for a Geography channel, and your videos are very future proof due to their breadth and long term relevance, even if countries might change a bit in the future. I'm sure schools and other educational establishments will use them.
You've basically given an introductory course to every country whenever somebody needs it, and have set up the foundation for future Geography channels. The fact is, you've achieved something very few would ever hope to.
I've been following you since the Bangladesh episode and it's surreal you are about to finish. Please do more Geography go videos cause you're the only channel on TH-cam that actually caters to an advanced knowledge of geography; I always learn something. So sorry for what happened, I've been a fan for many years from when the reaching to the Venezuela episode was a dream. But here we are, even if you feel stuck, you've done amazing things with the channel and I do hope all gets well soon.
I was robbed 3 times while living in Los Angeles, my car was broken into, my van was stolen along with its catalytic converters , my storage unit was broken into. All my guitars, camera equipment etc gone. However I found a lot of my stuff from my storage listed on Letgo and another app that I can’t remember, I found my electric guitar on eBay etc. I was able to recover a lot and track down the criminals with the help of the Pasadena Police Department.
The worst part of getting robbed is often not losing what is taken but the horror of the violation of a place you thought of as safe.

Geez wow, I'm so sorry you have to go through this. I really hope in particular that something can be done about your mom's heirlooms because that is particularly sickening. It's easy to blame yourself for what you could've done differently in circumstances like this, but you were out doing your job and living your life, you shouldn't have to worry about "crap, did I leave any lights on to confuse would-be burglars?"
And I feel you on the TH-cam thing you touched on in the second half (I guess just replace break-in with health issues and losing my brother), feeling like you're being left behind just because you have to deal with stuff outside GN. I suppose I don't really have much of a solution, just lending some empathy and letting you know you're not alone in all this.
It's true; you can't blame yourself when things like this happen. It could have happened when he was out getting groceries or worse, when he and/or his mother were at home.
you were one of the creators that inspired me to start my channel, and now as a creator myself i know exactly how you feel. youtube's algorythm gives us a very short life span and a very fragile relevance lapse. if you keep going i'll keep going !

Hi Barbs. My students and I are loyal Geography Now viewers. I am subscribed and we APPRECIATE everything you do to help us learn. I understand the disgusted sickening feeling. When you think about the fact that a total stranger was in a place that was your safest space, the space where you let go of the world, that they touched things that you use or they took or destroyed precious sentimental items, you definitely feel physically ill. You believe you will never feel the same way in your home, it will never be that safe place again. You travel because there is an entire world out there to experience. Most of our students will never leave the tri-state area. They learn to appreciate our world and other cultures through your eyes and experiences. Traveling can be awful sometimes, but when you get home-even those trips to a new place you wouldn't trade for anything! To get through our experience, (which made us too late to say goodbye at my kids' Grandma's funeral) we told ourselves even the Pharaohs of Egypt, as hard as they tried, weren't able to take their worldly possessions with them. Your life experiences, YOU CAN!

I'm sorry, Barbs. I went through this in 2015, and the feeling is terrible. It took quite a while for the sense of insecurity and the paranoia with every noise outside at night to pass. In my case, they even tried to come back a week later to steal the car, but I managed to stop them.
If I can offer a suggestion, something that really made a difference for me was installing security doors, special anti break-in doors, on all the doors that provide access to the house. Wooden doors are very easy for them to break; iron doors and special security doors are quite different. In most cases, they give up just seeing the door and go after an easier house. But you also need to put iron bars on the windows, or they'll get in through the window.
After I installed this in the house, and cameras to monitor the house while traveling, that feeling of insecurity decreased a lot. Today, I feel safer inside my house than anywhere else because good luck breaking in here! It wasn't cheap, but it was worth every cent.
Also, around the windows outside the house,you can plant rose bushes or prickly shrubs near the windows,this will add a bit of a deterrent just as good as barbed wires but more appealing.
i understand the beginning of this video so much. the idea that maybe your personal life shouldnt be involved in this channel but it effects you so much that you need some sort of outside support. know that it doesnt matter to us if this feels “unprofessional” or whatever. youve been an amazing channel to watch as ive grown into an adult. we love you and are here for you.

I'm so sorry to hear that you had this happen to you. My house was broken into on my tenth birthday while my parents and I were sleeping. The robber accidentally woke up my dad who then chased him out the house, but the whole thing left me feeling unsafe and anxious in my own house, a space that you're supposed to feel safe in. Some of the trauma from that event still lingers with me today.
I really hope you get back what was taken. None of this was your fault.

It's probably better to find a new place for yourself and your mother and perhaps be discrete about it and keep your new location private. And while you're at it, a security camera with motion detection sensor that sends a push notification on your phone should cost less than 40 dollars. Hey Barbs! I think it might be time for a change of scenery. 3 years ago some junkie broke into my car in Denver and took my laptop with all my Masters degree work including my thesis (always back up in the cloud I learned). Afterwards I landed a job in corporate world at a top consulting firm, things didn’t work out and I used my savings to travel in Asia the last year. I studied my ass off for the GRE exam and got into Cambridge for a second masters. If you can stomach it, you may want to go do your PhD in Geography or a similar path and become a professor. Students would love you my man.

I'm sorry. Nobody should have to endure what you did at such a young age. But a bit of advice from someone ~30 years older: I know people will say "It gets better", and it does. Trust me it does. We've all been where you are. And I wish I could say you'll never experience any more tragedy in your life, but that would be a lie. But each one will make you a stronger person. Don't let that opportunity go to waste.
I'm so sorry for the loss of your dad and for the other difficulties you're going through. I hope you're able to get counseling and that you have supportive family and/or friends. Grief never ends but (in my experience) it evolves and becomes less intense with time. Hang in there.

Damn….im really sorry you and your mom are going through this. Back in college, I took a short road trip with my friends and my car ended up stolen. It’s certainly not to this level, but I get the feeling of helplessness, anger and mistrust. Especially since it involves your mother….mannnn I’d be so heated too. The shining light is that you have an ENTIRE GLOBAL community here to support you.
