The worst part is them removing it from us even trying the pistol out in later patches, people try to excuse it saying it was a useless addition, but modders could’ve done a lot with it so it would fit perfectly.

I mean, it was pretty lackluster in Doom 2016. They didn't want a repeat of that with the sequel, hence why it was cut.

Combat shotgun and super shotgun use shells
Plasma rifle and ballista use plasma cells
Heavy cannon and chaingun use bullets
BFG-9000 and unmaykr use argent energy
The rocket launcher is the only weapon that uses it's own ammo (unless you count the unused pistol)
I wonder if they'll eventually add a weapon that also uses that same type of ammo and what it'd be like
