I’m almost 30, and thinking about going back to school in an animation program. Your videos have a lot of useful tips, and I find that you’re pretty straight to the point. Although - there’s so many tips! Hah :)
Whats crazy is I watched this when it was first uploaded, loved it took notes, the whole shebang. Now that I am actually putting my portfolio together and preparing for CTNX 2019, I'm watching this for like the 4th time lol. Super nervous , anxious and excited all at once!
So excited to see fellow artist videos! Even though I already work in game studio. Game studio isn't too different. One I need to tell people who interested to work in our industry, you definitely need to be able to draw from very basic like anatomy, shadow, lights. Sometimes internship have style in their drawing, pretty, but can't really draw basic things. We wish for employee who has unique characteristics in their drawing but also able to follow other styles. Cause it will be hard to work with someone who can't follow other artists concept. The last, don't be stubborn. We're working in team. There's no bad or better art or who's the better. Sometimes we need to create very simple design even though we can draw more "beautiful" but We created art together and that's matter. I wish I can make my own videos it will be fun. Cause I love sharing. but I do have anxiety to stay on camera. lol
Update: just watched it and I legit took notes. Your insight is very much appreciated. I'm planning to attend ctnx this November. All I can think about is how to present my work Character designer in the making!!
Abu. I'm pretty sure Abu is the stitching maestro. Anyway, thanks for uploading this. Honestly, hearing you say that painting isn't required made me so so so happy. It's my weakest point because I spend so much time drawing. I definitely want to improve, but trying to teach myself character design and make a portfolio while working three jobs...definitely finding myself prioritizing, and painting's just been put on the back burner big time lately. I love your videos, and you're so inspiring. I've been feeling like I didn't have a chance getting hired unless I was well-rounded and could do a fully rendered piece, but this kinda gave me a big boost. Thanks!
Hi! Thank you so much for the help with the video! Your videos are one of the main reasons I’m looking at going into character design, and your videos have been really inspiring for me. So thank you! I wouldn’t be on the path I am now without you and your TH-cam channel! ☺️
this isn't even my industry but i watch your videos out of pure joy and curiosity. lots of props and credits to animators and illustrators. i took classes for my degree and realized how little the amount of patience i had. i'll stick to cinematography and color grading but i will also watch these just 'cause :DD
This could not have come at a better time! I only just found out that Graphic Design (which I study) is not what I want to pursue. I also just realized that what I constantly do in my spare time (for as long as I can remember) is a serious option for the future! I have researched character design, but I am Dutch and had never heard of it before here. I could not find (large) animation studios in the Netherlands and I am not sure what to do next. Your video is packed with incredibly useful tips that give me hope! Thank you so so much!! Any tips on how to proceed now are welcome! ;)
I don't know how your channel made its way into my recommended because I typically watch, golf videos, and hockey highlights... but I'm really glad it did. Your videos are awesome, and thank you for making them!
This is the video tutorial I've been waiting for this. This is exactly what I needed to know. I never clicked a video so fast!!. Thank you so much for this! ^^
I want to apply to an animation institution and this is extremely helpful! Thank you! It's actually nerve wrecking because I'm finally going after something I want to do. But I gotta nail this portfolio so yeah, gotta get over the nerves.
I really love these videos They are so so helpful to us little people considering going into the field when we are older. Honestly the professional inner workings of the industry is so shrouded in mystery to me. Do you think you could do more like this? Like do an animation or storyboarding one? I know it’s not what you specialize in so maybe you could do a colab with some Industry friends to see what their takes are?
These are seriously so helpful! Would you be able to do a tutorial or be able to give some advice on how to draw glasses? I always find when I try to on my characters that it always looks flat. Any suggestion is welcome!
Could you do some videos about drawing basics for people if you have time? I am just getting back into drawing people and would love to see how you go about designing a character and drawing people because I really enjoy your style. I was looking on your channel and didn’t see any. Thanks.
Oooh this is exactly what I was looking for!! I have a revision of my portfolio in two weeks and I need a good character design portfolio, and now you upload this video!!! Lucky me!! 😙😙😙
Hello Laura! Do you think you could ever do a video where you critique some subscribers art? Thank you so much for making these super helpful videos and have a nice day! :^)
Thank you so much for making stuff like this. I want to be a character designer for an animating company one day, but the teachers I’ve had have little to no experience with that. Thank you for giving a quick heads up of what animation companies expect!
I’ve redesign the same character 8 times, I’m valid, oof turn arounds ahhhhhhhhhhhh‼️ I’m a causal but making a portfolio would be a huge accomplishment. I understood everything surprisingly, your a great specialist in many areas
How much say do you have in character designs while working professionally? You mentioned you can explore character design so do you have free rein when working with Tangled on how the character looks? Or do you have to go by a guideline? Have you ever had an instance where you thought a character would look best your way but had to change it to fit with their liking?
character designers are hired because a production likes their vision, so they are free to explore within the style of the show for a character, but yes character designers get notes to change things a lot. the art director/character supervisor could take your drawing and completely change everything if they wanted. it happens sometimes, it's a collaborative process
I suddenly feel overwhelmed because of all the things i need to work on involving my art and ability to tell a story XD but this video was a great help thanks sm :3
So cute at 9:59! Thank you for great tips, especially telling a story part. Question! If my styles happened to be limited to anime style, would you consider revising a little?
Absolutely! everything is so helpful for me. Actually, I already have a lot of portfolios. but I know I have to make more other works to match with the animation studio. I'll do my best to meet with you in the studio after a few years. keep it up!
Question. Don’t know where to ask. Have you tried Clip Art Studio software for design ? I see a few designers liking Clip Art Studio, or is Adobe Photoshop the industry standard ?
Hi there I did enjoy your tips! Can I just ask if it is mandatory for a portfolio to be on digital work? Or is the traditional work still a thing? Thank you!
Hi Laura, thank you for this invaluable info and insight. I swear you read my mind by making this one. I have 2 questions: Are there times when it’s best to submit a portfolio? Who do you submit to? I’m assuming it’s emailing a link to the person/people screening portfolios. Btw, I really enjoy your videos because they are always super informative and entertaining. You should put your art on your merch! Thanks again!
the best time to submit a portfolio is immediately when a job posting goes up. just submit to the job postings found on studio websites! and no problem, thanks for watching!
2:23 I usually go with the first design I think of and I am always content. I see a picture of the character in my head and go that's the guy. Then draw him redesigning is great for some people though. Also sometimes when I see behind the scenes art I go how can you reject that that's beautiful.
Hey laura, just yesterday i was wondering about a topic and i see that video is related😁 how to put traditional character exploration drawings to the portfolio? What is the best way to erase the sketchbook background without damaging or losing any parts of traditional drawings? Thank you!
great question! get the cleanest scan of your drawing that you can (I use an epson scanner), and then pull the file up in photoshop and adjust the "levels" with command+L. try to brighten up the whites until they are a pure white that matches the background layer, and darken down your drawing if it looks faded from the scan. from there I erase everything that I can around the drawing, getting as close to the drawing as possible. hope that helps!!
Do you have any advice on the types of Sketches & WIP images to include in a portfolio application? I know what to include for my finished pieces & anatomy studies, but I'm not sure what type of sketches studios are generally looking for.

I like to think one of the older ladies aladdin interacts with in the beginning patched his pants 😂
Aladdin is pretty charming, I bet he could charm his pants into patching. Just by winking and smiling! :)
That's exactly what I thought!!
I had the exact same thought!! I turned to my bf and said, “I bet it was that lady who says ‘still I think he’s rather tasty’”! 😂
I’m almost 30, and thinking about going back to school in an animation program.

hi, i'm new for this and i wonder.. what does a character designer do? make and draw the character only? or do animation also?
@@youtubepremium-gv7wo This is super late...but character designers don't animate. They just design characters

Character designer in the making!!
I've been loving your channel the past year Laura. Can you possibly do a traditional character design tutorial in the future possibly? :)
Have you thought of making Mabel into a human character? That would be so fun! 😄
Realistic Mabel sounds cool.
AHHH I absolutely adore your channel!!

I don't think it's matter as long you can make a great portfolio.
Aamira Mulla Art yeah I know. That’s not my question exactly. Mine is more of a tech question.
Can you make a scifi cityscape video?
