I was one of the first to recieve the initial MTP issue for Herrick 12 in 2010. We went out a month early and were told we weren't allowed to wear it until the incoming brigade had officially handed over, so we had to take both our MTP and desert DPM issue! The outgoing lot who'd never seen it before were looking at us like we had two heads when we first started wearing it. It looked ally at the time but now everyone is wearing multicam or a variant of, I kind of miss DPM. One interesting thing I did notice with the first issue in CS95 pattern cut is the colours were much darker and richer, and much more closely resembled original Multicam. When they started issueing MTP in PCS cut, the colours looked lighter and more washed out and it looked worse and kind of cheap imo. No idea if that was an intentional decision or a manufacturing issue.
I was a screw at a Training Regiment. All of our trainees were turning up with shiny new MTP, new type helmets and beltkit. The staff were cutting about in ancient DPM, trop trousers etc. The OC was para reg, and even after our kit started coming through he wouldn't let us wear it until his para smock arrived. Still wear my PLCE now, it fits like a dream.

@americanapipedreamapparel saw that one, was just wondering if there was a chance for something a little more in depth like this one. Granted, there probably isn't much more to add that the short didn't, so not a total loss if it doesn't happen
I was in Afghanistan when the switch was made. The Brits I was working with at KAF had to travel to Camp Bastion to get their issue (round about Dec 2010). When they were replaced, the new arrivals already had the gear. When it comes to the 'fashion show' and soldiers' preference, it's little wonder. MC was already in use with SOF in various countries and was recognized to be what the 'cool kids' were wearing. I arrived in Afg when the first wave of US troops who were issued the OCP CONUS arrived. Others already in Theatre eventually swapped out (ACP/UCP for OCP). Funny thing, the guys from 10 Mtn Div told me they were underorders to turn in their OCP uniforms upon return to the states as it was for deployment to Afg only. The 'powers that be' didn't want to see anyone wearing it stateside thus drawing more negative attention to the UCP/ACP. The Aussie SASR were wearing MC despite their country's cam being very distinct.
Great vid guys and some cool comments here, one of the benefits in switching to a common pattern was the commonality of equipment (webbing, plate carriers, day sacks etc), while the USMC went for Coyote/Brown kit and environment specific clothing, we went for the one pattern to rule them all. It is effective enough in all environments, but agree that DPM/M81 is way better in the woods
I play airsoft alot in british woodlands and seen both dpm and mtp used alot as it is easy to buy surplus and will say both patterns work really well in the woodlands and in autum months mtp really shines
This video got me chuffed... would love to see CADPAT and it's 3 variants (TW, Arid, and MT) next... especially since it was CADPAT that started the digital camo explosion
I remember at one point, Gen Vance wanted the CAF to switch to Multicam. I'm glad the decision was made to develop CADPAT MT instead. There's just something about having your own unique camo instead of using what everyone else is using.
Sat here at work watching this while wearing MTP… Good to see some photos of the collections of one of the members of the Queens plaid group show up in the video!
Great video idea and really interesting rundown. From my experience with MTP in the UK, I would say it is rarely very effective, sometimes reasonably effective and often no good at all. As you say it’ll be interesting to see what prolonged warfare in Europe does to camo pattern fashion (although both Ukraine and Russia seem to use multicam, multi terrain patterns and half the Ukrainian army seems to use surplus MTP). DPM is forever unrivalled in my eyes for the UK environment.
i believe multicam to be extremely overused so I love using this in the cadets because it looks like a tougher, more battle hardened version of multicam. very drippy, very unique. also you would be surprised how well it works in dark forests. i have passed many stealth excercises with it. also belgian jigsaw is in my opinion the worst camo
Im in the british army cadets, and mtp is quite good from my experience, and it works quite well in woodland environments idk how similar our woods are to the rest of Europe but it works well
As a current serving soldier in the British army reserve, I find MTP to be a bit too bright and too brown in a woodland environment. Even during winter time, which I thought it would be better in. I was also in the Army Cadet Force in the late 2000s. I found DPM to be a great camo. Although, the latest versions at the time, are a bit too dark at times. We did have some older versions which were a bit lighter, and worked better. I think the great thing with having a camo like MTP is simplifying storage and logistics. Storage, in terms of us serving soldiers don't worry about finding an extra space to store the x amount of kit in different camouflage. Then with logistics, it just makes it easier us to be issued with the required kit. My experience being in the reserve so far, its a pain to get issued the kit you require. Even when you need to replace a certain bit of kit. It usually comes down to bureaucracy, or the stores give you excuses to why it's taking so long
went into this video expecting the normal "its just multicam" that a few americans have claimed but its nice to see a fully thought out video on this subject
I bought some MTP stuff and I m wearing them here, in Serbia when I m going to nature. At summer when it’s dry and in autumn it’s blend pretty well. In early spring and in the winter no so but idea of Multicam type Camo is to be ok in every environment not good everywhere so I think Brits will keep it
Funnily enough MTP works great in England, ofc in the deep end forests DPM green might work a bit better but as the majority of Englands land mass (like 98%) is fields and farmland MTP actually works really there. I know the royal marines for some reason switched to straighten up multicam, but even they still keep MTP kit as it's very compatible with multicam.
I like MTP but I do miss DPM but so many people still use dpm webbing and daysacks. We first got issued MTP for the falklands in 2011 and it worked well there mixed with DPM I think it’s too light and the multicam tropic is much better.
3:44 You used an image of the US Army's Camouflage Improvement Effort that used photosimulation (the technique you're describing) in an early stage. This also happened after the development of MTP.
I think MTP works well enough. It's easier to have a camo pattern that works reasonably well in multiple environments than 2 camo patterns that don't work as well the second you leave that environment. Even in dead foliage in the autumn and spring I think MTP had a good edge in woodland terrain and frankly, you just never know where you're going to deploy.
I think Multicam and their derivatives are the future for NATO forces. First off, a lot of western forces are still deployed to arid environments, where Multicam performs well. But also as we see in Ukraine right now, a lot of people wear it, despite getting issued at first MM-14. Multicam is pretty effective all around and also works great in an IFF Role for NATO forces
