  • How do international development theories help us understand and conceptualize development? How do we define development, anyway? Here, our new host Miss E will lead you through different international development theories, from Modernization Theory, Dependency Theory, Neoliberalism, Critical theories, to the more contemporary expressions of development, such as Amartya Sen's Human Development and more recently, the UN's Sustainable Development Goals or SDGs. Which one best explains the international development situation today? Do any of them do a good job - or is development too complex of a concept to neatly fit into a single box.
Thanks again to Miss E for the exceptional job hosting this one! Hopefully you'll see more of her in future videos!
And of course, subscribe so you don't miss any new videos!: / @korczyksclass

it's great that all of these were explained so well in under 8 minutes! Thank you. I would also really appreciate it if you could consider adding a few sources for further reading in the description boxes of these videos.

Great suggestion! I'll definitely try to do more of that for future videos. I do always post the sources I consult in the description. In this one, for example, there's an article by Amartya Sen that would be great for further reading, as well as the book, Orientalism by Edward Said that is referenced in the video. Walt Rostow's book, The Stages of Economic Growth is a good one for Modernization Theory. I'll definitely look at adding more recommendations for further reading moving forward if I have any.

@@KorczyksClass Thank you so much! Amartya Sen's article was great and I'm currently reading Said's Orientalism. Will also look into The Stages of Economic Growth, thank you.

The problem of these theories is that they’re unscientific and more concerned with pushing their respective ideologies on reality rather starting from reality to develop a theory and predictions. Development shouldn’t be about what some people think should be based on their political affiliation but on a deeper understanding of human societies and how to work within the mechanics of society for better and humane development. Too much ideology and little substance will not help anyone and only end up with failed projects and initiatives, which what we actually see today.

Amartya sen human development approach is pretty good, but the things we have reason to pursue and value should also be accompanied with greater resposibily towards our planet..

I think the problem with SDGs is that they're not taking into account the security issues of third-world countries. To implement even the simplest SDG, you still need state capacity with a credible government free from the fears of intrastate (civil wars) and interstate threats. That's why I think just like MDGs, SDGs are doomed to fail in the global south countries.

Critical theory did not emerge in the 1980s. Perhaps she meant popularized, but the historiography for critical theory dates back to the 1930s with their critique of Fascism emerging in Europe.
