This week, it's THE BIG STICK: the main mast. The lumber from great-grandpa's black spruce tree has been drying for the last few years and we're ready to glue it up with a hollow channel in the center for the electrical items we need at the top of the mast: navigation, VHF, and nav instruments.
And of course we return to the cabin trunk (last week, we built that), but we also get a special visit by "big" Aaron, who took some of our ash stock to build a banjo. We get to hear it in this one. What a treat.
Next week we get to a bit of rigging details. Don't miss it! See ya every Friday.

Acorn to Arabella is a wooden boat building project taking place in Granby, Massachusetts. Steve started as an amateur wooden boat builder building a 38' wooden sailboat in his backyard: designer William Atkin's Ingrid with a Stormy Petrel's gaff rig. These videos follow the journey from tree felling, to lumber milling, to lofting, to the lead keel pour and beyond-sharing details of the woodworking, carpentry, metal smithing, tool building, and tool maintenance that classic wooden boats command. This ultimate DIY boatbuilding project will continue well past launch, when he and the crew will travel and learn to cruise aboard the handmade wooden boat that they've built. Just kidding about all that, this channel is about a Siberian Laika named Akiva.

I really don’t see a problem with ads. It’s helping pay for bits and pieces that Arabella needs. A great video and so interesting watching people ‘doing their thing’ - each to their own. We even got some banjo music! If someone had told me four years ago - every Friday night you are going to be watching a wooden boat being built from the keel up…..I’d have said something profane most likely.
This has been a great way to round off my week.

You guys really ought to tighten up that hand clutch on your planer power unit. It is supposed to take a minimum of 35 lbs. of pressure to lock in the clutch. On irrigation wells we tighten ours up to 50 or 60 lbs. to prevent slippage. Your using three fingers and that is much too loose and if you ever put a load on the motor it most definitely will slip and likely to burn out the clutch. Take off the spec plate with the two screws and inside you will see what looks like a star wheel. Rotate the output shaft until you see a pin that engages one of the notches in the star wheel. Push it it and turn the wheel clockwise a few notches and let the pin re-engage. Try the lever pressure again and if it's still too loose, turn the star wheel some more until you get a minimum of 35 lbs. to engage and lock in the clutch.

Lovely episode, as always. And the INFOmercial was indeed more info- than -mercial, so very interesting in itself. Now I have to think of a project to justify getting one of these... Nice shots of Ernest too. I would have liked some of the vintage footage of the spruce coming down (with a go-pro in the top? do I remember that correctly?) Early days, and have far you have come!

The white ceiling with the dark wood looks amazing! its awesome to see that coming together. Years in the making and now we can see for the first time how the end result will be like.

EcoFlow is quite literally popping up in videos everywhere lately. They must be running one doozy of a campaign. They do make some neat products though (like that integrated generator).

Love the 'banjer' and from the faces in the background so did many of the crew. Amazing skills on display throughout the boathouse today. Aaron is growing up in a very lucky way. And the portability of those chargers - particularly the River mini and the Delta mini - along with their quick wall or solar re-charge - makes them very interesting and usable choices. Thanks for sharing the info on them. The mast and spar making is moving along much quicker than I would have imagined. That spruce would have also made some great guitar tops! Good morning to all from the hills and bluegrass music-land of East Tennessee!

Hearing people who know their craft explain it to us who really don't know how to build a boat is really enjoyable - and I feel like I'm learning so many things that you do in the boat house.
And while I think on some days you might miss the "times before we put the roof on the house top", it looks amazing in the newly applied white and placed in position - I'm sure it'll be wonderful to sail & live under.

In aviation woodworking (I am an A&P) sanding a scarf or any glue joint is verboten, a planed joint is the ONLY option as sanding bends over the wood fibers resulting is a less than full strength joint. Sanding a glue joint violates FAA regs because it results in a lower strength joint.
