absolutely loved seven year slip. crazy how two people (with seemingly very similar book taste!) can have such a different read on a book. i think it was maybe the most romantic book i read all year, i felt like i was falling in love. that being said i read it a long time ago before it kinda blew up so maybe i loved it because i went in pretty blind!! heavvvvyyy agree on once upon a broken heart tho lol

I love that you had that experience with seven year slip! I think I heard everyone else talk that way about it and I really wanted that for myself as well but it just…didn’t happen. So I was a bit disappointed, lol. But I still enjoyed it!

I’ve got to be honest…. Seven year slip being on this list is criminally offensive 😂 but I’m not on the tok so I don’t get the over hyped recommendations so my expectations were met lol

People We Meet on Vacation is my favorite Emily Henry! See, for me the backstory was my favorite part. I dont think the flashbacks were to convince us of why they should be together, but rather to explain why certain things were happening in the present. I ate it up. But, hey, we're all different in what we like. Isn't that so fun? That one person can hate something, and another can love it?! Books are just so lovely. Love your videos and your whole vibe. Ive really enjoyed discovering your channel! You do such a great job!

A lot of these books are above average good, but I've never understood why people lose their minds over them. And they get upset nad take it personally when you disagree with that opinion.

There's NO WAY. Once upon a broken heart was the best fantasy book I EVER read. I would give up my leg and arm to be able to read that book for the first time again.

I really enjoyed Fate Inked in Blood, but as a mood reader myself - yes if you’re not in the mood for it, it won’t hit. It’s a douology, the next one is out in May and I did pre-order because I enjoyed it so much. I loved the Norse inspired storyline, the magic was just cool once you are in further and learn more. The banter between the two MCs I found I was laughing out loud a few times, and the simmering female rage I hope will explode in the next book. I wasn’t annoyed with the FMC (think of the ACOTAR - why would she do such stupid things sometimes???), and she did not “need” the MMC at all to be her own person. However, it is what it is. It is a popcorn romantasy (not heavy on the smut, but there’s a bit), a little predictable follows the typical formula, but it is a fun time! It’s like any Nic Cage movie - you’re not there for the accuracy or the deep thoughts, you’re there for the excitement and fun times! Just enjoy it, but only if you are in the mood for it.

I like that you describe it as a “popcorn romantasy”! That actually makes a lot of sense. I know I’ll want to pick it up again sometime, but I might wait for book 2 to come out.

I feel the same about People we Meet on Vacation, but my hot take is that I also didn’t really love Happy Place 😬 I thought Harriet and Wyn’s relationship was so surface level considering they’d been together for 8 years, they just seemed immature and incompatible, plus I didn’t like their friends. At this point I’m not sure if I should keep trying with Emily Henry because her books are sooooo popular but I didn’t enjoy the two that I’ve read. Am I the problem 😅

    • @olivesbooknook
      @olivesbooknook  5 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

I think you read the two extreme Emily Henry books, haha. One that is not that great (in my opinion) and one that is super polarizing (I actually loved happy place but was very surprised by it.) Maybe give one of her more classic romances one more try before giving up on her altogether? :)
I’d recommend Beach Read. Such a good, solid romance book and I love the characters and story.

I clicked on this video because of The Seven Year Slip. I read it this month for a book club and two other girls in the group LOVED it and then me and the other girl didn't like how clementine focused on the past iwan and not the present Iwan who's right in front of her. Plus we wished the aunts story got a little more light shed onto it.

I actually finished People We Meet on Vacation today and I see a lot of your points! I haven't read any of Emily Henry's work before but I think I'm going to give her another shot! Also, your points on Once Upon a Broken Heart is completely valid, it's definitely the weakest book in the series

OUABH was such a letdown for me because of the massive hype, I agree with your take on Eva, a lot of people made her out to be a strong heroine like you said but I just thought she made so many poor decisions that were, as you said, downright stupid, there were times when I thought she had figured somethings out (they would’ve been pretty obvious to the reads imo) for her to have a whole new revelation about it later when I thought we’d already established that. There were times when I kept thinking “what more could possibly happen, there doesn’t seem to be much left to do now” but there was a whole other book, and I can usually be pretty relaxed about soft world building but there were to many unexplained “magic because… magic? Things that took away suspense because in my mind I just thought “ok so now what new magic are they gonna use to fix this because there are almost no established rules to the magic system” there were things that got randomly introduced and poorly built up (mainly the tree and Apollo) that felt like plot devices, the vampires felt out of place to me and I can never take most iterations of them seriously so they didn’t really work for me. Also back to the serious hype the book had people also said it was so whimsical and imaginative but it fell flat for me and somewhat generic, and also like a whole: well actually I’m not dead because this actually happened” almost like a kid who kept changing the rules in a game to be OP. And in caraval wasn’t there a whole plot point about how immortals and such creatures didn’t want to love because it made them mortal? Did that get reconned in the last book? Maybe I misunderstood that so if anyone can explain I’d love to hear you out (that is if anyone actually reads this rambling comment) and I just thought the romance was kinda icky at times, and I really tried to love it but I just kept thinking “wow more sexual harassment” (I know I’ve done the quotations a lot but it makes sense when I type so apologies if that’s annoying), overall I did actually enjoy it somewhat but there were to many glaring issues for me to really love it, which makes me really sad because I loved the vibe to it and I love foxes and I wanted to be one of the people who loved it that much but overall I’d rate it maybe 5.5-7/10

    • @olivesbooknook

I also DNF’ed A Fate Inked In Blood at around page 100. I literally couldn’t get into it. I picked it up because I’m trying to like fantasy romance and I love Nordic settings. It absolutely didn’t work for me.

I've been following you for a while now which makes me think that you'll like my recommendations:
    Transcendence by Shay Savage.
    Hello Stranger by Jade West
A Heart of Blood and Ashes by Milla Vane.
Read them and then let me know how you felt about them.

I read Dead Romantics by Ashley Poston because I kept seeing reviews saying it was amazing, life changing, and such a unique premise....OVER HYPED by 1000%. Yes, the premise was unique but the execution really fell flat. I didn't care about the characters, it was predictable, there were too many sterotypical characters. I bought it on sale along with the Seven Year Slip, and I don't even want to read that one now. Your review here makes me think I should just unhaul it. I just don't think I'm the target audience for this author.
I read People We Meet on Vacation earlier this year. Was also let down by that one. Book Lovers was the first of hers that I read and I had a great time. But I have since read 2 more and felt less strongly about them.

I’ve heard that seven year slip is significantly better than dead romantics! I read her most recent book this year too, a novel love story and that one was way worse than the seven year slip as well. So kind of confusing.
