  • The tattooing industry is evolving at lightning speed, causing a divide between the older generation of tattoo veterans and the kids just starting their careers. Arguments spring up over almost anything-the type of equipment one uses, the way people should break into the industry, how one should (or shouldn’t) use social media, etc. Our panel of artists take on the subject of old school vs. new school.
    What’s a positive change that you’ve seen in the tattoo industry? What’s an old tradition that you wish would come back? Let us know in the comments!
    Inked has rounded up all of your favorite tattooers for another season of Tattoo Artists React. This season we’ll be asking them about the first tattoo that they ever did, what they think about name tattoos and we’ll find out if they can identify celebrities by their tattoos. You’ll watch them rip into some of the worst tattoos on Earth and laugh until your sides out as they tell us about the worst clients they’ve ever had to deal with. It’s going to be a season filled with excitement, hilarity and even the occasional tear. New episodes will be posted every Friday.

      Theaterm I find that a lot of people just used that as an excuse to get free labor, the guy that taught my bro was the same way. There’s also quite a bit of jealousy I’ve noticed too, once he started seeing that my bro was getting better than him he stopped showing him stuff. It also happened at a shop he worked at too, he was doing better work than the owner and it lead to arguments and my bro having to quit that shop and open his own

    I got last week my very first tattoo. The artist is 22 I think and he is tattoing for only 3 years (Demus Bogdan is his name). I choose him because I love his art. I had no idea how young he really is. (He found it funny. that I am with 52 the same age as his mother is). He made me a whole sleeve. It is amazing. What strikes me most is, that he did not the designs I originally wanted, he made the diesigns which fits me, my ideas and his style the best. And he was right. I love every piece of art he created.

Would you rather have her with a tattoo with errors because the artist couldnt stretch the skin properly, "because you, the bf, didnt want her nipples touched." Out of the 1000s of hours spent in a shop, I've NEVER heard another client yell out for an artist being inappropriate. Aaron Is has the most accurate POV. Up to 2004-7 (my apprenticeship), our equipment environment was garbage: there was NO innovation in equipment til 2010-ish and that was INDUSTRY wide from since the 90's when I first started getting tattoos and started getting friends in the industry. To tattoo at the level from entry to the level I could at year 2, is much easier now days than it is currently... BUT that's the natural projection of the future of any industry. My favorite part of the 2004-2007 is not having instagram, google images, and pinterest LOL, I feel sorry for friends now days. Remember when BMEZine (because I had a 10lb laptop with free internet, before ATT used to CHARGE for tethering) and reference encyclopedias were the only way (because of my mentor and a library 5 minute walk from first shop).

All I heard was woe is me, I swept a shop for 2 years and was treated like a servant before I could even pick up a machine so all of you new artist should do the same 🙄. No there is nothing wrong with getting an apprenticeship some people are gifted with legit natural talent that can only flourish if they push themselves. Art is such a broad and open field a creative person can really hone in on their skills when they find something they are inspired by. Thanks to social media It’s no longer a big deal if they suck at portraits but are amazing new school artist because now their portfolios have a broader reach and will attract the proper customers.

    • @dirtysouth9222
      @dirtysouth9222 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I think there's an important middle ground here. Apprenticeships aren't just about making the apprentice suffer. You need to be a part of the shop you are joining, which includes things like sweeping the floors and cleaning the bathrooms, and all the other stuff that isn't art but is required of the business. Just coming in as some super talented diva that only makes art is going to be a recipe for disaster. When you have your own shop and can just pay people to do that stuff, that's when you can choose to just make art. As far as choosing to only tattoo one style, again there's a middle ground. If I go to an artist and want to have a style that is mixed or has influences from another style, they're going to be ill-prepared to do that. I personally want someone who can at least dabble in other styles while specializing in one.

    There’s actually a similar thing in modern jazz, old school vs. new school.
    There was a book of compiled jazz standards made in the 70s (I believe) called a fake book, made by people at berklee college of music. If someone was legit enough to get a fake book (or if their teacher told the seller “he’s cool”) then you were in. But in the mid 2000s the permissions were bought by the Hal Leonard Corporation and they started making “The Real Book,” a legal version of the fake book.
    So nowadays in jazz jam sessions, it’s standard to memorize EVERY song in the book in that key, and to be ready to play any time. If you have to ask “what key are we playing in” they’ll probably tell you “the normal one” to test you to see if you’re up to snuff. And God forbid if you actually take out a Real Book at a jam session; you’d lose all credibility for a good long while.
    I find the parallels here interesting. Great video!

    I think one of the things I've most noticed, and it could be moving down the eastern seaboard, but the artists I knew 30 years ago really bought into the hardass biker like (some rode, some didn't) lifestyle. They thought nothing of taking offence at perceived slights and doing violence or having 'friends' do it for them (free tattoo, just pound this guy). Folks today seem friendlier, more mellow.

    There is nothing wrong with Tattoo Flash or American Traditional Tattooing, I find there is a high degree of tattoo snobbery and contempt from them regarding other forms of tattooing other than what they specialize in. If whatever their specialty is goes out of style (think 90s Tribal) they may have trouble adapting to other styles of tattoos, so it's best for tattoo artists be able to do at least some basic traditional tattooing as a starting point if something like that happens happens. There is always going to be a market for Traditional Designs, they have had a nearly 200 year legacy that's still going to this day. I am getting a Sailor Jerry piece next month, my artist will not just copy the flash but give it modern bright colors and correct an anatomical problem in the original. Just because a tattoo design is old doesn't mean it not worthy because it's not completely custom drawn from scratch--the ability to customize older designs to the client verifies an artist is just not a xerox machine.

    I’m really thankful for my old school mentor. He’s taught me not only how to tattoo but to appreciate the art of tattooing and have a deep respect for it like he does. This might not be a popular opinion, but I’m happy to work hard and earn my right to tattoo. Yeah the constant cleaning and razzing can get to you sometimes, but you’ll appreciate it so much more to reach those milestones in your apprenticeship when you learn something new and you’re that much closer to your license. It’s also taught me to have a tough skin for potentially rude or obnoxious clients.

    I thought this was gonna be a debate about face tattoos. But yeah, I feel like this applies to just about everything nowadays. There's way more readily accessible information out there and the technology has made it way easier to get into. On one hand thats a good thing on the other it's not because people don't really take the time to perfect their craft before making it big. I definitely think there's a lot to be said for paying dues.

    I think there is a division in the industry with how specialized artists are nowadays. You have tier 0 artists such as Nikko, Dmitri Samohin, Yomico, Carlos Torres, Jess Yen, Rember, Steve Butcher, Roman, Sandra Dauksta, Sergio Sanchez, David Vega, Justin Hartman who are the top of top at the moment in their styles. Then you have the veterans like Paul Booth, Robert Hernandez, Hori, Victor Portugal, Guy Ak.. Then you have the new artists from Russia, Estonia, Finland, Sweden, New Zeland who are killing it with their color realism.

    I think my biggest issue with what I hear people describe about the "old school" method of becoming a tattoo artist, is that a huge part of the experience just ends up sounding like abuse. Some people even use words that are synonyms for abuse - ie hazing, notably, but others as well. Completely separate from tattooing, we have a bunch of evidence and studies about how abuse compounds in people, and that marginalized people are A, less likely to purposefully put themselves in abusive situations by choice, and B, that marginalized people are more likely to be forced into abusive situations. All that wrapping around to say, I imagine, that part of the reason why old school tattoo artists are mostly white men, with a smattering of white women, is because of that.
    Anyways. I have nothing against working an apprenticeship where I am paid for my labour, even completely inane and weird, tasks and shit. But it is an invasion of consent to force somebody to tattoo themself //unless they want to//, it is abusive to lock people in bathrooms or to scare them //unless they ask for that//, it is unfair to require an apprentice to spend their own money on you //unless they offer//, and having an industry that has that much history of abuse and possibility for abuse is unhealthy and needs to be changed, from the ground up. And I feel like what I hear and see from people trained in the "new school" method is just that. Accountability, pay for labour, consent, and treating people with respect first.
    ((I have a lot less to say about people who teach themself off of youtube or what have you - I have some weird ass friends who get into some weird ass nonsense, and I have literally never met somebody who did this, and of the "new school" tattooers I've met/know, none of them have done this. So. *shrug*))

    • @crios8307
      @crios8307 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Exactly. Some "old schoolers" really have to look up at job rules now and the "new schoolers" need to denounce abuse if it happens. It just needs to stop because we went from a service of modification to an art service, and we know how artists rarely thrive in abusive situations.

That's why so many people can just jump into the art and it only takes a few years to get a reputation. Even the shop I go to that has been around for 25+ years has several newer artists because there is such a need to keep up with demand.

I also tattoo from home but rest assured it’s in a really clean place. I’ve only gone for three months but I am way better then some of the local shops where I live. I think because many people view tattooing as art and it is, and art comes in all styles. I went to art school as a illustration major so I can draw well, who's to say I cant put that on someones body. Yes it doesn't look like traditional tattooing but thats okay, you can still love and respect that older style but it should be fair game to tattoo any look that you like. If people want your art style on there body, fuck yeah give the people what they want.
    Also more fine artist are wanting to be tattoo artist and hate to break it to ya men but women beat men everyday of the week when it comes to numbers. Most classes will be all female and then maybe one or two male students. Art schools are made up of primarily women.
    I also want to get into the industry right, so im working jobs that pay well so I can save up a lot of money so I can properly afford an apprenticeship and survive. I have the option of well paying jobs but my passion lies in the love of tattoos and want to go down that road.

  • @AEtherNevermore

    I always wondered about why there is a divide in this. I get the opposite reactions because I didn’t go to an art school (although I want to eventually) but I apprenticed under my father with drawing and oil painting. I get judged not by my drawing but by my form of education. Like I’m not worth anything without a $5000 piece of paper on my wall. Turns out my brother who went to art school pretty much is on similar footing to me at skill and our education is both different. So I am wanting to know if it truly is preservation of a culture and the art of tattooing as a craft or disdain of the the fast generation that wants everything now and has the majority of the resources at their disposal? (Time is money mentality.) There are schools which are “Learn in One Weekend” which I think is a little... odd... Which is nearly not enough as of in depth training. (I’ve been training as a student nail technician for a year now with longer time than the 4 day classes. Which there seems to also be a divide on it with self taught vs one weekend vs one year+) Also, I don’t get the whole “sweeping the floors and cleaning up” kinda thing. A ton of industries do this, construction makes you learn mixing and the basic work for everyone in seniority, nail shops make you “float” for everyone who is with a client in spa settings, the p*rn industry... well you get it. It’s not like if you don’t have your own shop you don’t have to clean up your own stuff to the legal regulations of your area. So I don’t see the big deal out of literally starting from the ground to understand every operational aspect of the industry. I mean if you are beginning and you can’t clean shit properly or understand the spore testing of your autoclave as the person designated to do that (apprentice or not) one mess up can shut down the whole place if health and safety sees a pot job done. I am wondering if there is a full in depth study on the two different social sides of the tattooing industry or not. Seriously asking questions because I am fascinated. (Just an enthusiast and independent learner right now. Honestly I am having to most fun learning about how cool machines are built at the moment...) Also why is there a whole “white guy” thing with older tattoo generations. Honestly asking because I’m not white and all I knew was Asian stick and poke culture and cultural body modification. (Oblivious.) Also is there a divide in those who use digital vs traditional media for drawing out their designs for a client? This seems to be a bit of an argument in fine arts culture too so I am wondering if the tattoo industry is seeing the same argument?

      yep, now just image if you slacked off installing tiles you could very easily give someone a disease. these young people bitching about having to clean tubes and mop lol? its the most important thing you will learn from your time as an apprentice, if someone is so lazy or think they are too good to do that work and they complain when being told to do it then they are simply not going to do it when nobody is looking and its all on them. people keep comparing tattooing to other industries and forget that with tattooing you have to be extremely disciplined, even getting a little bit lazy is all it takes before you are spreading diseases or causing infections. its on the mentor and their reputation to make damn sure you have a respect for your clients and disciplined enough to protect them. i didnt learn in a shop with a proper apprenticeship and really wish i could have, but have always had a lot of respect for that way of learning and understand why it is the way it is. all i hear with these new artist is crying and complaining that they want another thing in life to be handed to them and the thought of working for something is too old school and wrong because its not inline with what they want.

    if the industry provided real paid apprenticeships and weren't abusive cause seems like a lot of the artists have gone through a period of pure abuse starting out that would be great. The old school way just comes with a lot of baggage which I think the new school has helped slowly move away. However, I get why people are criticizing the new school since its so easy/faster just to skip steps. Unfortunately, the industry there isn't a body that protects artists or really provides them without outlets to get health care and so on during these roles. To take multiple jobs and be overworked just to eventually do what you love shouldn't be a standard.
