Glad you went in the military for the experience. The Marines definitely will set you apart from the real world when you get out. COVID-19 definitely didn’t help. I spent almost a decade in the Army. My son wanted something different and maybe some college money If he needed it. I knew from experience too we were in a twenty year war I really didn’t want him playing call of duty In Afghanistan than spending the rest of his life with regrets. Especially seeing how we ended up in the end. So when he went in the Marines I’m like be a Marine choose a smart job. He went in as a Admin and spent four years @ MCRD. He didn’t mind it except they convinced him it was better to marry his psychotic gf than live in the barracks and he did. She found some local bartender and drugs was better. Lucky no kids and quick divorce quickly solved that. However lack of support and understanding from senior leadership made four years seem like an life time. One Gunny kept failing him numerous times on PT keeping him from getting his Corporal stripes that even his Sgt and Warrant Officer new was wrong and waited tell the Gunny was on leave and sent him over to Miramar Marine Corp Air Station to take his PT test. That was BS but he passed like with flying covers was promoted to Corporal and they needed a Admin at another company for 30 days and put my son their since the Gunny was going be leaving anyways when he came back from leave and they didn’t want him messing with my son when he got back knowing he was promoted. He was pissed when he came back. Couldn’t do anything. Funny story the Gunny wasn’t qualified to do payroll because he couldn’t pass some test or some qualification. My son was qualified and did all the payroll. Another reason my son got out. He had all kinds of qualifications and certifications, he did taxes for the guys on base, he did like over hundreds funerals while he was there. He did care. They still let the Gunny slide. When he was getting out their begging him to stay. Was going promote him to Sgt. He’s like where were you when I really needed you. I’m out of
    here.

It’s nice to watch these videos and see how the new generation is living in the corps.
It makes me reminisce about my time in the corps, but man, I’m so glad I got out.
No room inspections but I still keep my marine corps standards of cleanliness and basic hygiene.
No PFTs or dumb company Moto runs but still maintain my old marine corps health & fitness and then some.
No living in shtty barracks and even though I pay rent, I do live in a nicer spot.
No checking in with my SGT if I want to leave on PTO.
    No 5:45am roll call.
No mandatory shaving and haircuts, but I still keep my grooming standards.
I can come and go as I please. I can take a nap whenever I want to (sometimes even during work hours). I say all this because if you’re thinking about life outside the corps, best believe it can absolutely be better than being in the corps.
