It’s always the same thing. An area in a city gets built up by artists. I’m talking about visual artist, musicians, poets. And then after a while, it becomes gentrified. Then the artist can’t afford to live there anymore. And in the end, the very thing that attracts you to an area is gone. we don’t need another district filled with bars and restaurants. What we need is an area it’s filled with music and art!

Deep Ellum went way way back as it was slang for Elm Street. The area originated as a downtown for people from South Dallas. The whole area was never connected as it started off as a commercial area cut off by three railroad yards.
So this gentrification process or regentrification process has been ongoing for many decades.

My grandmother would tell me about Deep Ellum (Elm) many years ago. It was a hip antithesis to Main Street a long long time ago. It served as a downtown for South Dallas. That whole area was always separated from not just downtown, but all of Dallas by three railroad yards first. Later, the Railroad line and yard headed south to Houston was utilized to build Central Expressway which kept downtown and Deep Ellum separated. Later, the elevated I-345 cut through.
My question is why they would still be considering joining downtown with Deep Ellum when neither of the two were ever connected. What are they going to do? Connect Main Street and Elm Street together?
That would be like removing Trinity River in order to connect Main Street downtown with Jefferson Boulevard which served as the Main Street of downtown Oak Cliff.
