      How good is it?!? Waiting for my new bike to come in the post. Although, my new bike, a hardtail, would not be a comfortable ride down here, at least until Elk Park. That looks fun as hell.

    Nate, this is amazing! I did this with a buddy back in 1992 without a helmet on a fully rigid Puegot mountain bike that I bought at the BX on Petersen AFB when I was stationed there. I have no idea how I did this, but I was 25 at the time so that could explain it :) Thanks for the video so I can re-live it virtually!

      Alex, I was at CMAS in ‘93 and did this on a rigid steel bike, too. With shitty center pull rim brakes. Wore a helmet, though. The bad part was that I hiked up it earlier that day and was supposed to meet some friends at the summit and ride down with them but they left before I got up top. I met them around timberline, they told me my bike was in the truck…so I rode down solo, no cell phone, no nav, no one with me and had to haul ass before it got dark on me.
      Brutal day. But yeah, I was 23 and immortal, so yeah…

    Descent looks unreal. Lot of the chunk reminds me of what we experienced at North Conway blackcap mountain in New Hampshire last weekend. Highly recommend you get up there sometime, 15 minute descents with shuttle options, pro line has the steepest tech shiz I've ever seen full of Creek gaps. So many old school goodies.

      @@natehills9388 hell yeah! Of course you've already been there haha. Those trail builders know how it's done man.

  • @biketothetop
    @biketothetop 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    Nate, thanks for that! That was one hell of a great run all the way through the different zones of the mountain. There's nothing like biking from such a high place all the way back down to the reality of where man lives... you're greatly connected to the Earth as you rolled down it! That's certainly inspiring to see that run and looks like an attractive thing to put on my bucket list. I can only imagine how much elevation loss you had... did you adjust your tire pressure along the way :-)

    • @natehills9388
      @natehills9388  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It is about 7700ft into Manitou Springs. We didn't change pressures, but the AXS app actually said the tire pressures changed by 5psi from top to bottom. Very interesting.

    • @biketothetop
      @biketothetop 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@natehills9388 One must be cognizant of pressure changes on big descents like that because if you start out with too little pressure at the top, as you get lower you'll end up having less than optimal pressure and risk flatting on rough stuff. Typically this is never a problem because most of us never get to go on a ride with that much elevation loss, so in this situation it would have been best to set your tire pressure at the high point and compensate by adding a little more to adjust for what you want your optimal pressure to be at lower elevation.
      Back in my early days of mountaineering, we didn't have GPS devices for navigation.
      I would rely on topographic maps to navigate in conjunction with an altimeter. The altimeter reported elevation based on atmospheric pressure. We had to know that the altimeter could be in error based on changes in atmospheric pressure due to elevation.
      One could set the altimeter to the correct reading by compensation and knowing the actual elevation from using the topographic map at a known land feature on the map. For example if I came to a known feature on the topographic map, I could enter the elevation that I was at so that thereafter the altimeter would report correct readings. Lots of times if I was following someone's route description, they would report an elevation at which to change course or look for a feature so it was important to keep the altimeter accurate. The altimeter served as a secondary check to confirm one's position.

      Definitely worth a rip! ZEB is the best suspension product of the last 10 years. Period.

    Can someone who has done it help me with planning the logistics of this ride? Do the shuttles have capabilities to take bikes up to the top? I've read that due to construction, there's limited to no parking at the top, and cars have to park a lower lots then take a shuttle bus the rest of the way. Then to retrieve our first vehicle, we'd have to pay the entrance fee again correct?

      If you show your receipt, they let you back up for free to get your vehicle

    New to the channel. This is insane, Nate. Is this the scariest trail you've been on?

    A minute and a half in, and I'm wondering how often people go off the side of that trail and are never heard from again. Hell of a view though.
    You guys have some very dramatic landscapes over there. Australia just feels so... Flat by comparison.
