Decided to try some OV gear based on your videos. Been happy with everything so far.
I have their 30 degree long quilt - very happy with it. Ive used it down to the mid 20's (F) here in the PNW with the OV balaclava ,OV booties and merino base layers and insulated sleeping pad.
Tuck the neck tensioner slack inside, easy.. stop whining.😜
You know, no matter how many pro-quilt videos I watch, I still come away thinking, "well that was a nice sleeping bag minus the zipper". I like having the zipper available, to use or not as conditions require. For the few ounces extra, it's worth it to me. Just my own preference.

I just take my mummy bag, unzip it, and slip my feet in and use it like a blanket. Been doing that for ever camping. Works great, no need for a special quilt.
Ugh see I’m the opposite the zipper gets in my way , causes so many issues for me .
I have a Katabatic Flex quilt and no longer miss the mummy bag. But I think that's because Katabatic gets everything right. When it's in place it virtually feels like a mummy bag.
I use a quilt in summer months when I know it’s not going to be very cold. It saves me about 12 oz or so. In the summer the days are super long and miles are being put down. In the fall it’s back to my Western Mountaineering 20 UL. I have never been a little cold and I don’t wear cloths to stay warm. Quilts are not as warm as I sleeping bag just lighter. It’s the only reason I use a quilt at all.

I read the title of the video and had a good chuckle. A quilt without drafts is otherwise known as a sleeping bag. 😉 Nowadays I use my synthetic quilt over my 0 degree Marmot for when it starts to get really cold. I understand the appeal of the quilt system but I'm a zipper man.

Great video. I have a Katabatic Flex 22 and I’ve never had an issue with drafts.
I've been fighting a sleeping bag while bike packing and Moto camping. Had seen your previous video on this quilt and was on the fence. Went ahead and purchased the 30° while watching this video. He said Blue. Classic

I just bought the Revelation because EE quilts are on sale at garage grown gear but these quilts have excellent value it looks like. Totally would go this route if I hadn't been looking at the revelation for the past two years haha.
The best quilt for drafts that I have found is getting the UGQ XL in its widest configuration it actually wraps around my thermarest Xtherm regular width pad and its only in the 2 pound range for a 0 degree with a non tapered foot box and 1oz over fill

I have an outdoor vitals loftek 15 degree hybrid, it’s the nicest sleeping quilt , quality is amazing I love it , nice blue on the outside , warmth and light , if it gets wet still works and drys quickly , last quilt I will buy .

I have the 30 degree top quilt and under quilt for my hammock setup and love them both except for one thing. With me being 5'-10" tall, I am usually not a candidate for the long sleeping bags or quilts and the same is true for this top quilt. BUT! I have always had an 11 ft. hammock and I should have purchased the long version of the underquilt since I had to add a continuous loop to each end of it in order to hang it underneath the hammock. No worries now and it still provides enough coverage with no cold spots but it is definitely not as it should have been. I will most likely get their 15 degree set and order the long under quilt this time around! Thanks for the vid Dan!!! Jeff

Good review. I have this quilt and used it in both the tent and hammock- no complaints, nice piece of gear. Emmitt has had a positive impact on your channel.

Finally decided to buy the OV Top Quilt. I love it so far. No cold drafts, collar fits perfect. Im a side sleeper and adjust side to side throughout the night and this works well in allowing me to shift around without incurring any cold drafts.
I got the long version and im 195lbs, 6 feet tall and it fits perfectly. If in doubt, size up.
Only gripe is that the straps it comes with are little finicky and seem like the clips are a little fragile. This is just my perception though.
Nice review Dan. And appreciate the laugh on a Sunday morning. Gotta say, I've got UGQ quilts, and I haven't experienced drafts yet, however, that said, I agree about that draw cord. Theirs is in the same place, and it's a pain to keep it out of your face. May have to check this one out. Might replace my 50° with one. (I'm in Texas so...) I've already got a 10° and 30° quilt, but need something more modern for those cool evenings. Cheers!
I picked up a 30° long when OV introduced these and have been fairly happy with it. For the price I don’t think it can be beat. Warm to the temperature rated. One thing, you might want to try this with your pad straps...it looks like you are running the entire strap under your pad and then clipping it to your quilt. I did this when I first got mine and was worried I was going to rip the quilt because there’s a lot of tension on it. I use a 25” pad so this probably isn’t an issue with 20” pads. With the OV straps the elastic is like a circle and I put it around the pad (so part of the loop is under the pad and the other part is over the top.). One clip is stationary, but the other can be moved. I can adjust how tight the quilt is snugged down by adjusting where those female clips are. By doing this it’s definitely not as tight (i.e. worried about tearing it) as running the whole thing under the pad, but still holds the sides down. I hope my description made sense. It’s easier to see than describe. Try it though and see what you think. BTW, doing it this way the straps will squeeze the pad in, but when you lay on it the pad will push back out just fine.
You're description didn't make sense to me. So you're adding elastic or just running the including straps a certain way?
Not adding any elastic. If you have the straps OV includes it’s like a circle of elastic with one of the clips sewn to where the two ends of the strap are sewn together and a second movable clip. (See if this helps-imagine you have 3 feet of elastic strap. Fold it over and bring the two ends together and sew them together. Now you have a circle of elastic. Add clips and that’s the OV strap.). Now, put the sleeping pad through the circle of your elastic so the elastic runs over the top, bottom, and sides of the pad. (The elastic is encircling and “squeezing” the pad.). I place the clips on the outmost top part of my pad, one on the left and the other obviously on the right. Now I can use the male clips on the quilt and click into the female clips on the elastic strap encircling my pad. Two advantages are one, it puts less tension on the quilt than running it completely under the pad, and second, if you unclip the pad your female clip doesn’t disappear under your pad when the elastic contracts. Like I said if you saw it it would make sense in about a half-second. I hope this description helps you see it.
@@kellycarlen9605 I would argue that it was designed that way. I think you're doing it how OV wanted it to be done. I haven't seen the straps, but I doubt they would use twice as much elastic for no reason.

I just bought a -15°F mummy bag from them. I will eventually be buying a quilt from them too. I have a summer bag and a winter bag now; I just need one around 30°F and I would love a quilt next!

You should check out camping blankets which are a great alternative to quilts and bags. Can get lightweight down ones as well as waterproof fleece lined and windproof ones. There is a vast array of materials and weights to choose from and can be as compressible as quilts and bags. Added bonus is they are great for various weathers as you simply add or deduct layers depending upon requirements and no need to stick leg out to help regulate temperature.
And yes, skivvies is another word for pants.

top notch gear. I have multiple bags, pods, and quilts. I have the 30 and 0 degree old models and the 15 new model for the quilt. Let me tell you that the draft collars do exactly as they advertise!
The "I'm so unimpressed with Emmitt" look had me dying! This quilt looks nice! I am looking to get one for my hubby, as I just got a nice one from Enlightened equipment, but he may like this better!
I have enlightened equipment quilts as well. I have one of the older ones where I got pretty cold at night from it. I’ve heard the newer ones are a bit better.
It's been hard finding gear for plus size, especially sleeping bags/quilts. I was so happy to be able to custom order my quilt to fit! and its soooooooo warm! I ordered a 10 degree and I have no draft problems!
Dan can you do a video about what sleeping bag to use in hammocks?? And how to keep urself warmer in a hammock. 😊
An underquilt is probably what you need, either that or a sleeping pad in the hammock

As part of the synthetic brigade, I always have such floof-envy of ppl with down quilts & bags. And this quilt in particular looks _especially_ lofty & cloud-like. I bet it's so satisfying to curl up with.

I can appreciate the OVs high quality and their brand trying to pump out good quality for less price but the new summit redesign they jacked up the price by 100~150$. I know downs are expensive but just for the redesign, 100 increase isnt justifiable to me. No gripes on quality tho what so ever!

Have one of Outdoor Vitals original Loftek quilts that I love. Bought one of these newer quilts on eBay and saved a ton, and I can't believe how much better it is. It is way warmer and super light weight, but I have to agree with that since cord being in the middle is sort of annoying.
I own quite a few of Outdoor Vitals offerings and I like everything I have purchased from them. Unfortunately, this quilt is not available in extra long, which is why I went with Enlightened Equipment for my quilt as they will customize. If I was as short as Dan, the OV quilt would have been tops on the list 🙂

I have OV quilts. The design and concept is top notch. I'm sure their prototypes are excellent. The problem was execution by their overseas vendors. The first round shipped to me was short on insulation. Big gaps that did not expand after days open being fluffed regularly. They replaced them (no cost). The new ones were much better but not what I would say is as exceptional as the prototypes or the ones reviewers get. I hope they've changed vendors or increased QC.
The one I have is not a prototype. It’s the one that you get when you buy it :-) I haven’t noticed any issues like that at all. So far it’s been great! I also have a 30° version.
A quilt is mostly a quality sleeping bag on a different centerline with no zipper and a sewn foot box with less material on the back. A decent sleeping bag can be utilized in the same way as a quilt. If its about OZ reduction then go for it. If you are doing different scenarios and want options use a something like the Outdoor Vitals Aerie which does all of the required temperature control tasks. I've used a mummy bag as a quilt and its not an issue, and i can zip it up if temps get super low. a few ounces wasn't enough to change to a quilt.

I love my 30F Stormloft, i've used it down to 30 and still slept like a baby. Although i have to disagree about the sticking to you. I've noticed with mine that it sticks to my arms quite often.

You should try the hang tight gear heatseeker. Its a budget down quilt. Some models have pad straps others dont. (I had to sew them onto mine) iirc it was like 120 usd and for the price its pretty good

It looks like maybe the quilts can be turned inside out and still be fully functional. Same fabric in and out. No zipper that would be inside out. So maybe they are not all gray with vari-colored linings. Maybe they are vari-colored and all have gray linings. 🤔 Maybe something to ponder while wrapped up in one waiting to fall asleep. Yeah I have a sleep system that has no drafts. It’s called a western mountaineering 20 degree UL sleeping bag. Pretty light and no draft and no nonsense.

Ive recently picked up a Zen Bivy light bed 25 degree version with the nice fitted sheet for on the sleep pad! Check it out! They are annoyingly expensive especially since I live in Canada but I would really LOVE to see your assessment on the kit. Ive actually yet to have good enough weather to get out and to a hike with it but it looks and feels great for 2 pounds with no draft points its pretty cool!
Zenbivy is the only quilt I've found that is truly draft-free.

Just got the OV 30 degree top quit. Tried it out last night down to 43 degrees. Comfy warm, except for a draft at the sleeping pad ribbing near the spilt to the foot box. I have a Big Agnus Q-Core SLX pad thanks to Dan's review. Will try adjusting straps to fit tighter over top, but looking for any suggestions to seal this area. A small draft stop like the one at the collar just for the width of the pad was my first thought that could be added by OV, but wondering what I can do. Really loved my first time using this quilt. Can't wait for more.

Thanks for this video. I’m really debating a quilt. I’m a shorter and stocky and thicker guy (think beer drinking power lifter build)…and I just don’t like mummy bags. So I was considering a quilt for comfort not weight savings. I’m a moderately active sleeper and sleep normal to warm. I need something for Sept temps in the 20s… you think this would work?
I bought the old version of this just last year and have been pretty happy with it but it is definitely drafty. Kind of bummed I dropped the money like 6 months before they redesigned it.

Don’t know why no one seems to get this but… the neck adjustment string is great in the middle but you keep it *inside* the quilt. Then you can also adjust it with your hands and arms inside the quilt and it never gets in your face. Also, as an active sleeper I’m never tangled in it or anything.

Hey Dan, could you try testing out REI stuff. A lot of people swear by their stuff and I want to know if their tents, sleeping bags, backpacks etc. are as good as people think it is. (Or is it just diehard fans 😂)
How is it for sleeping on your side with your legs curled up and out a bit. Is there a good enough leg and foot space to kick around
Just FYI…as someone in the quality profession. People don’t say I.S.O. We say Iso as a word ( example: eye so). There are many ISO certifications ranging from aerospace to service to medical devices so we say ISO as a single word and then the number to save on a syllable haha. For example for service we say ISO 9001 certified. Medical devices is ISO 13485. Sleeping bags is: ISO 23537-1 for adult bags. EN 13537 is an old standard used in Europe but in 2017 ISO is now the standard of all standards for sleeping bags. So if you see an EN rated bag…it means it’s either an older product or the company hasn’t fully transitioned to the ISO standard yet. Doesn’t mean the product is bad…just means they haven’t adopted a “new” standard and gone through a certification process which is usually a very simple 2 day audit from a contracted auditor that works for a certifying body. There’s a lot to it but all that being said….outdoor vitals doesn’t have ANY certifications when it comes to quality but can still produce good quality products. The EN or ISO certifications are not an indication of quality of products produced but rather an indication that you have quality controls and processes documented and in place throughout operations of a business. It’s a double edged sword…it can lead to lots of red tape if done incorrectly but can also lead to methodical ways to identify bottle necks, cost savings, and root cause failure points etc. it already seems like outdoor vitals already has adopted many of these practices so if they wanted to get certified…I don’t think it would be difficult to accomplish. At least ISO 9001 would be easy enough. I could get them ready for the audit and certified in a year easy.
I was in that profession as well. I owned an insurance agency several years. People say it both ways 😃

High-alititude (11,000 ft or above) camping in Colorado makes me very hesitant to using a quilt. With a sleeping bag, I have that assurance that if I zip it all the way up, throw my sleeping bag hood on, pinch it tight, then most likely I will stay warm. However, the quilt seems pretty ideal in warmer climates or in climates with more predictable weather.

I never get drafts in my UGQ quilt that has dynamic tension control.
A Outdoor Vitals are the best on the market...
The dynamic tension control is fantastic. I have quilts from a few vendors and for cold weather I stick with the ugq just for that reason. In warmer weather anything will work just fine.
