    Honestly, I think some changes could make Other M a decent game. I'd love for there to be a rewrite.
    The things I'd do:
    -At the beginning The Deleter (which I'd call The Traitor) shoots Samus from the shadows which messes with her suit, taking away some of the upgrades. Instead of having to be authorized to use her abilities, Adam is using his time behind the scenes to try and download upgrade data for her suit, sending to her when he's able to which usually ends up being in tight situations, such as getting the Varia Suit to her after travelling through the lava sector.
    -The reason she's so close to Adam would be because after losing her parents and the race that took her in and raised her, Adam was the only or first one to take interest in her and her cold demeaner, making an effort to learn more about her and offer someone to talk to. It might need some work, but I feel this would be a good way for them to grow closer.
    -When she faces the clone of Ridley, instead of freezing and acting like a child, she's in shock for a moment, the encounters with her nemesis flashing in her head, making her become more enraged. Ending with the memory of killing Ridley on Zebes, she unleashes her fury in a Super Missile that the Ridley clone easily dodges; when the clone reaches out to grab her, she uses her boost to dodge but is then snagged mid dodge by his tail, thrown into the wall. Similar scene with Anthony and then the battle starts.
    -Instead of long monologues/narration the game would rely on Samus' eyes and actions to show how she feels about certain situations and interactions with characters.
    -Calling Samus "Lady" would be a way to tease her, an endearing trait that came from their bonding in the Federation when she was solitary and alone.
    -I think when Samus comes across the sector containing the Metroids, the baby she saw is draining energy from a keypad or computer near the door which is the reason they can't dislodge it from that side. Adam is close behind and notices, so instead of letting her go into the chamber with the invincible Metroids, he shoots Samus with the gun The Traitor used to take Samus' abilities to slow her down, freezing the baby Metroid and the rest of the original scene takes place. Though maybe without some of Samus' over the top reactions.
    -Honestly, the whole MB clone being given human form and growing close to a scientist is fine in my opinion. And the Federation turning on her makes sense for why she decided to go on the attack. It may be strange and make her seem really moody and conflicting, but it's a clone of a bio-computer. Who knows how well they cloned her or what they did to change her behavior.
    -I like the ending with Samus retrieving Adam's helmet, but I'd change it so she uses her full suit, maybe some abilities limited from having to carry the helmet.
    Not perfect, but I think this would be a cool game to play.

    Man I remember e3 2010 when they announced skyward sword, DK country returns and other M. Everyone was like "Nintendo is back with the classics!" and then skyward sword and other m turned out to be the black sheep of their respective franchise lmao. What a ride this metroid month has been! Can't wait for your reviews of the prime series next year! Hopefully by then we'll have more news about prime 4

      I like Skyward Sword but I can understand why others do not.
      I cannot understand how anyone can like Other M. What it lacks in gameplay it also lacks in storytelling. Its contrivance for Samus being unable to use her suit upgrades is idiotic; a "bag of spilling" as used in the Prime games would have been more compelling than "I will not turn on this feature that keeps me alive in a superhot area because this guy who is not even my boss has not yet given me permission".

    • @xHeigoux
      @xHeigoux 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      now other m is other m, but I just can't understand why people disliked skyward sword. I only played it last year because I thought it's a bad game. A friend let me borrow it on a whim and I had a really good time with it and played through it twice in succession. The time changing mechanic was really well implemented and the sword fighting was more than just randomly wiggling your wii remote (twilight princess is stilly my favourite zelda though). Sure, it was a bit forced and enemies had very obvious patterns, but I never saw that as a bad thing. heck, it's a game, of course there are unrealistic game mechanics everywhere. This is fine, as long as it adds another layer to the zelda experience. The only thing I woud criticise is the flying part of the game. getting to each major area in the game can get a bit annoying since you have to fly to the respective teleport zone every single time, but it's honestly not too bad. getting all rewards on the flying islands can be an awful experience depending on how you go about it. as for me, I only collected them once I had already activated every single stone (? can't remember the exact mechanic) in the overworlds. Thus, I only had to visit each of them once. Some people also complained about repetitive bosses, but those fights are not the exact same and get progressively harder.

      @@xHeigoux Glad to see I'm not alone in enjoying Skyward Sword (as well as having TP as favorite Zelda, though I've never played the Wii version myself. Sister had the GameCube version and I eventually got the Wii U one). I find it kinda funny that a lot of people complain about the controls while I personally never had much trouble with them. Occasionally in longer play sessions the wiimote would get a bit uncalibrated but that was so easy to fix that it just didn't bother me. About the only reason the combat was giving me trouble was that I was 11 and didn't quite understand the concept of precision, apparently. The flying coulda been better but even that I found to be alright for the most part haha.
      (actually, come to think of it... I rarely complain about DS touch controls or Wii/Wii U/Switch motion controls? In some cases I actually prefer them to button controls. I guess because I grew up with a Wii and a DS so I got used to them.)

    Other M is a game that had a lot of potential, but falls flat on its face in execution. The worst part is there are glimpses of a much better game within it. Notably that flashback where Samus actually shows emotion and where Adam even manages to come across as having legitimate pragmatism behind his stone-faced facade. If only that had been the entire game, if only Other M had been a full prequel to the entire franchise.
    Seriously, that would have solved almost every problem. Samus being so uncertain of herself and overly subservient to a commanding officer could have actually worked if this was a story about how she came into her own self-actualization in the first place. Likewise the Metroid reveal could have felt so much less derivative of Fusion if the story was about how they were first discovered, and likewise MB instead of being a clone of Mother Brain could have just outright been the original and we get to see how she first went rogue. Likewise Adam stopping Samus before she could actually fight the Metroids could have worked so much better if she was still an untested rookie.
    Most of all though Riddly, full stop MF'ing Riddly. The entire sequence of Samus freezing in PTSD panic could have actually worked if this was canonically her first encounter with him after the murder of parents. The whole game could have been building up this fear of a shadowy monster haunting her nightmares, and then when that monster finally appears in the flesh Samus's reaction could have been entirely warranted.

    Like the majority of this story and Samus' character could have been spared with just a few tweaks.
    Adam: "You don't move unless I say so, you don't fire unless I say so."
    Samus moves her head back, implying disbelief, before slowly walking up to Adam and disabling her helmet, coldly staring down at him.
    Samus: "I am no longer under your jurisdiction"
    She then starts walking away without turning her helmet back on, when Adam stuns her and knocks her out by hitting the back of her head. As a safety measure, he has his reluctant team taken aback by his cruelty, pull up a Chozo database the Federation has on file, remove all her weapon and defense systems, and then split them among the team to hide as they investigate. Samus wakes up some time later, pissed as FUCK.

    The only way the Ridley scene where she freezes up makes sense is if you had read the manga. If I'm remembering correctly, she has to overcome a lot of fear and be able to truly concentrate for her suit to work properly (which I assume is why it flickers on and off between zero suit during that scene). Seeing Anthony die was enough to shake her out of her fear and drive her to face the danger in front of her.
    I don't necessarily agree with how they told the story, especially since right after all that tension she went into a monologue about what just happened when complete silence was all that was needed. Also that for a game that wasn't hugely popular in Japan they relied so heavily on a manga story element that was never released in the US (to my knowledge).
    But it does make sense. Sorta.

    • @fieratheproud
      @fieratheproud 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      if I'm getting this right, PTSD reaction? If I recall right, in the manga we're shown that Ridley killed Samus's parents right in front of her and then later her adoptive family too, and Ridley was supposed to have died in Super Metroid and both of the Ridleys in Other M and Fusion are clones of sorts. I guess it would be possible for her to have a stronger reaction to him when he's supposed to be *dead* than before when she knew he was still alive and with the Space Pirates. i don't know how exactly PTSD works tho. If that was the intent I feel like the game could have communicated it a bit better, given how common it is to dunk on that scene.

    In the past I compared/contrasted this game with the Twilight series.
    One is about a supposedly strong female protagonist who in reality proves to suffer from crippling codependence that has her engaging in suicidal behavior all because she seeks the approval of a boring male character.
    The other is about sparkly vampires.

    Man, such a shame... Other M's fast, reactive combat was so satisfying, especially fresh off the heels of the slow and and trundling movement of the Metroid Prime games. And the level design was just amazing. It truly felt like a 2D Metroid game beautifully translated into the 3rd dimension. But... as fate would have it these glorious efforts of Team Ninja are now forever and ireversibly tied to Other M's awkward controller restrictions and LEGENDARILY BAD story/presentation. As a result, we will probably never get a fast paced 3D Metroid game with reflex-based comat ever again because such a product will look too similar to the biggest flop of the franchise. Such a shame...
    At least the 3DS remake of Metroid II tried to pay lip-service to Other M's combat with the 'Counter' move, but clubbing an enemy over the head with Samus' gun arm to stun them is just not the same. It lacks the smooth, visceral satisfaction of climbing onto your enemy's shoulders, shoving your arm cannon down their throat, and blowing them apart with charged shot to their insides.
    Team Ninja's Metroid, you will be missed.

    I had a similar experience: coming across the Metroid Other M trailer on the Wii Nintendo channel and getting really excited. However, once the game dropped and I saw all the negative reception, I passed on it. I wonder what would’ve happened if I had picked it up back then. Would I have gotten into the series like you or perhaps the exact opposite?

  • @xHeigoux

    I feel like you weren't presenting MB as well as you could. She is based one mother brain, but not the same creature and not a real reincarnation. She's an AI with an artificial body who became self aware and developed emotions. At first she was eager to learn and help the scientists. But as she began to form her own self through the interactions with bergman and the creatures, she began to realise that creating bioweapons is actually pretty fucked up. The scientists saw her human side as a problem (mb would probably stop supporting them) and tried to mindwipe her. She tried to reach out for help, but noone came to her aid. mb felt betrayed and got absolutely pissed at the galactic federation, so she planned to retaliate. In the end, I feel like she was a decent villains, even if her existence is kinda stupid.
    I literally just played through other m for the third time and here are my main criticisms (mostly stuff you didn't mention in the video):
    I got stuck multiple times. the game always tells you where to go, but some pathways are really hard to find and many areas and tunnels kinda look the same. One time I didn't realise I was in the right area because it looked exactly like one I just traversed and the way the bomb tunnel was implemented made me thing I was entering the same one I just came from. I wasted half on hour until I noticed my fault.
    The upgrade system feels like an afterthought. items make no noise and many of them are hidden really well or behind late game upgrades. I literally went through most areas of the game after "collecting" all suit power ups and finished the game with a bit more than 50% of the items. why? because many are really well hidden and you wouldn't find them unless you spent hours looking around every room in first person and a ton of items are only obtainable in the post game. Other m is balanced in a way that not only makes low% playthrough relatively easy, but also introduces a hard mode that is just that. As a result, I never really felt great about finding upgrades since I know that I could just beat the game without them.
    I really hate that cinematic exploration mode where you are forced to move around extremely slowly with what are essentially tank controls. not only that, but in one part of the game you have to traverse the same multiple hallways in that mode ... 3 fucking times. you did mention this is the video, but man, this really annoyed me.
    Every single fight in the game devolves into spamming a d-pad direction while charging shots. The dodge is incredibly overpowered and there is no need to time it or anything. just spam dodges and charged attacks whenever you aren't sitting in a hitbox after the dodge. I fricking dodged through nightmare's charge attack and that dude is big. your positioning just doesn't matter in this game.
    You said auto aim wasn't an issue for you, but in my experience it often seems to work against me and either refuses to lock into my target or refuses to let go of a target I don't want to shoot (missiles). Samus also often refuses to target enemies after dodge charge attacks and ends up blasting the walls. This often happens with jumping or flying enemies.
    The traitor subplot is really underdeveloped. Like you said, it's never actually brought up by anyone although one soldier after the other dies. And then it just ends with the culprit being found dead. I cared so little about the deleter and the randos that I didn't even realise that random soldier number x was the last remaining one. Everyone just decided to split up and then they all die. isn't adam monitoring their positions through regular comm terminal visits? ah well, guess since he can only talk to samus the culprit managed to get back to his assigned area before checking in with adam.
    A lot of the boss fights ended up being pretty boring, mostly due to not requiring the player to really move around much. you can beat many of them just by spamming dodge and beam attacks + missiles. Nightmare has a nice arena with grapple targets and multiple elevation lvls, but I just stood in 1 place and either dodged or jumped every single of his attacks. The lave fish was even worse. I never left that first island. again, it's mostly a problem with the combat system imo.
    Anthony is pretty cool. I originally didn't like him calling samus princess, but he's just a joker. Anthony is a reliable helper and I wouldn't mind if he was brought back in a future game.

    I think it’s important to note that the whole Varia suit situation in this game was lost in translation. In the Japanese version, Samus is being defiant and intentionally not using it as a pushback, Adam then begs Samus to use it (Y’know cus he doesn’t want her to die) and she finally does.

    !!!MASSIVE COMMENT AHEAD!!!
    As someone who played Other M on release, got 100% and then played it again, many years later with even more context from other games in the franchise I missed (I ironically played Prime 1 and Fusion at the same time - Fusion before leaving for school every morning, and Prime 1 whenever I got home, so with both of those and the other THREE Prime games (hunters too!) under my belt at that point, I only knew a fraction of the problem on my first playthrough).
    I remember on my first playthrough having a massive gripe with the control scheme right off the bat. Frustration as to why I can't use the numchuck. This problem only became worse once FP-Mode was introduced, as imo, the introduction of the numchuck could have freed up movement whilst in FP to AT LEAST make transitions seem more seamless. I'd also just come hot off of the heels of playing No More Heroes 1 and 2 which might seem redundant to mention until I considered the fact that the "walking-sim" sections didn't phase me AT ALL. Keep in mind - No More Heroes does this too. This wouldn't be the case when returning years later however; it became one of my big gripes.
    However, one thing that I already hated, that only became WORSE on a repeat playthrough with more knowledge of the game was the "Investigation Phases". To put it lightly, f*** these things well and truly. Like, I'm fairly accepting of most of this game's gameplay flaws, as movement wise, I'm genuinely surprised TN managed to make such a limited control scheme feel not completely obtuse on the main combat side (FP-Mode aside ofc). But these "Investigation" portions were so poorly designed with those awful pixel perfect accuracy things attached to them that they didn't just slow pacing like the walking sim sections, they completely threw a brick wall at it. Not to mention that some of them either felt redundant or actually detracted from storytelling by just spelling it out for you.
    One thing your review did was highlight something I couldn't quite put a word to, that imo killed the game more than just the Ridley scene on its own, was the lack of subtly this game has. Now, I get it, stories don't have to be subtle, but for a franchise like Metroid, that is basically built off of subtle story telling? It's incredibly jarring to play Other M. Even as a young teen who didn't know the whole franchise, I noticed this and disliked it heavily.
    To me personally however, I have FAR MORE resentment for what this game retroactively did to Fusion then to Samus' character. Both go hand-in-hand yes, but with Fusion being the game I remember and loved the most from the GBA, I can't help but feel personal hatred towards exactly how much Other M butchered it entirely.
    The Ridley scene immediately hit red flags with me too however even as a kid. As the scene was playing out, I remember being like, "wait, didn't you already kill him like at least 4 times?" It ended up not only destroying Samus' character for me but completely threw away any investment I had in the story.
    My only hope was the side plot of the Delet-- oh wait, they forgot and "lol he died off-screen, sorry xxx"
    The final thing I wanted to touch on was ability progression. I'm not gonna say anything on Adam because your video couldn't have worded it any better than I could have. But here's the thing, I think the ability thing had a purpose meant to give is that satisfying payoff with Samus' one-liner you highlighted. And it does give me a smile, but for all the wrong reasons. I actually think this system could've worked in tandem with the narrative if Samus shown a little more resistance early on and made executive decisions for herself. The varia suit should have been activated by her the moment she entered the doors of the extreme temp environment with maybe a back and forth between Adam and her where he reluctantly concedes defeat and agrees. The wave beam similarly should have been implemented as soon as Samus sees herself surrounded in that box with Adam maybe even commending her slightly for the quick thinking. And the Gravity Suit similarly.
    The animosity Adam portrays at the beginning should slowly have weakened off until he ends up just letting Samus do her thing. Maybe it'd have made his send off better?
    Lightning round of things that are also bad:
    - stop the monologuing lady, it is the biggest killer of players getting invested in the mystery this story is trying to set up!
    - the intro, as absolutely gorgeous as it is, weirdly made the Gravity Suit feel non-canon to this game, as she SHOULD have it in that cut-scene. I would have loved if she did and then there is a mention of the Gravity Suit function being integrated into her suit somehow, which would have been cool lorebuilding. It wouldn't retcon fusion as this function could have been lost with her suit infection and explain why the SA-X sounds so heavy too.
    - MB is bad and the final sequence is bad. ignoring the inner monologue killing a lot of the story, MB could have had a better arc that was a bit more involved.
    - Ridley dying offon-screen removes any sense of player satisfaction and further makes the actual encounter even worse (somehow)
    - Nightmare is an all time favourite game boss for me, and him being in this game pisses me off, because I genuinely feel he should have been a massive surprise for only Metroid Fusion
    - Shady federation dealings are also retred in Fusion which again kills the game retroactively even more.
    Praises I want to get out the way bc this game does have pros people ignore when shitting on it
    - visually a treat to play. Love the environments and Samus' suit redesign
    - the trailer theme imo is absolutely gorgeous and the trailers themselves were low key hype
    - post game was awesome and I didn't hate the zero suit escape
    - combat highlights Samus' mobility incredibly well and exactly how much of a badass she CAN be
    - Music is good
    - Phantoon return is a good homage since it comes AFTER super Metroid!
    Final thoughts:
    This game did a lot worse to Fusion than it did to Prime or Super Metroid. I'm honestly fond of fond of the SM homages bc they make sense and are handled well aside from retconning the Gravity Suit out of existence which I'm pretty sure only I care about lol. I also still enjoy playing this game with my brain switched off ngl. It's fun to fight in this game. I honestly want a remake of Other M from TN with the same director that completely cleans it up and uses the same 3rd person style but refined (controls especially pleeeeeeeease)

      I also love this review and your channel. Found you today from DYK Gaming and have been binging the Metroid Month series. You need more subs - your content is really high quality for the traction you're getting.
      If it isn't obvious from the praise, I subbed! Time to watch your Prime review from this year!!

    I agree this game way overdid it, but a strong woman showing weakness is not inherently bad! Complaints like that are the reason we have so many heroines that get labelled Mary Sues.
    Anyway, Samus probably left an imposter in her place this game while the real one joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe and changed her name to Carol Danvers.

    • @Wayneisboss
      @Wayneisboss  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Oh for sure, strong women can show weakness, I would never claim otherwise. My issue is how it was presented here in the game, where her PTSD was used as a momentary plot device to create brief drama but never showed up again in this story and wasn't really explored as part of her overall mental state
      In fact, the Metroid Manga used her PTSD in a much more important, effective and powerful way which is why the Ridley scene in Other M gets under the skin of a lot of Metroid fans

    • @LinkMarioSamus
      @LinkMarioSamus ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Wayneisboss You laughed at the notion that Samus’s PTSD scene could show strength in any way. The idea was for it to be the same as Ripley in Aliens who gets over PTSD. Not that this game does it well at all mind.

    • @Wayneisboss
      @Wayneisboss  ปีที่แล้ว

      @LinkMarioSamus
      So I wasn't trying to mock the notion so much as the execution. Again, I admire how her PTSD was handled in the manga including how it was used to showcase her strength as a character
      Funnily enough, this section of the review is exactly why I'm a little more sympathetic to this game nowadays. This is an older video and my ability to convey my thoughts on certain topics has matured a bit in that time. Given the opportunity, I would describe this scene and my problems with it differently now

      @@Wayneisboss That’s fine. I didn’t mean to sound passive-aggressive or anything. In fact the way certain people talk about modern heroines you’d think they think women in general are like how Samus is portrayed in this game which is insulting beyond belief - e.g. how Captain Marvel “hates men” when her attitude towards the male authority figures who held her back is precisely what Samus’s attitude towards Adam should have been.

      Oh yeah I totally get you and trust me, I'm fine with some criticism towards my conveyance in this video, I think if I wasn't it would be kind hypocritical on my part lol
      And yeah, I feel like people have just taken a toxic approach to strong female leads. There's always been pushback but it's a lot louder these days and very obnoxious that you can't have a female protagonist without someone claiming them to be a Mary sue for being on top of things

      So disappointing too. I recall Sakamoto claiming that people in the States lacked a lot of context for Samus as a character since the manga wasn't as available over here and stuff like that, but I personally find the way the Manga handled Samus's characterization (and even her departure from the Federation) in much better ways and the way Other M tried to do it just doesn't even compare

    It's amazing how much Sakamoto missed the mark on this one. The lack of voice in other Metroid games helps draw the player in and places us in Samus's POV (literally, in the Prime games!) By having her constantly monologuing over cutscenes, talking *to* the player, it reinforces that we are *not* Samus in this game, merely omniscient observers. Even if the VO was good, it would still have been a massive and unwelcome pivot from the previous games in the series.
    (Tons more to say, but this video does it so well already!)

    Well, it was outsold 3:1 by a way simpler game in the same franchise and on the same console, so there's that lol. As soon as controls were more complex than NES-style D-Pad and two buttons or swinging the remote, the Wii Sports crowd was out.

    Am I the only one who doesn’t care about d pads in 3D games like this and 64 ds. Well no matter I’ll continue to play 3D games like this with d pads and 2D fighting games with analog sticks with my head held high!
    I would also like the unlocking system again if it was handled differently. Stuff like wave beam that goes through walls is obviously something that could mess up a lot of stuff on the base so that being limited makes sense but they should take a comedic tone with the Varia suit with Adam asking why the hell she took it off and stopped paying attention because he thought she’d be fine. He would allow the gravity feature after defeating nightmare since that’s the only thing that the feature would’ve tampered with. It would also be awesome to see this with sequence breaking as you get yourself stuck in rooms were you need specific abilities and Adam allows you to use it while getting increasingly annoyed with each sequence break. In a story focused game this could lead to complete changes in the story. I’d really like to see that.

    Other M is not nearly as bad as the fandom prefers to say. I'm not saying it wasn't overall bad, but it had great visuals, relayed some plot points from the Manga that people wouldn't be sure was canon, and introduces Anthony. Anthony's awesome. It does however have a subpar story, mixed voice acting, bad plot points and occasionally boring gameplay.
    Also before he gets to Federation Force; play it ya dumb people that jump on a bandwagon, it's a great multiplayer game. In my opinion, at least. It's focused more on the Galactic Federation and that's part of the reason I love it. It's cool to have the universe fleshed out and see what happens inside the Federation from the eyes of a soldier. I wish they'd make a sequel and add more weapon types, character customization and maybe mech types.

      Also the controls aren't good. They function, but just the wiimote makes it incredibly difficult in combat and pointing to aim or holding it up to recharge your energy is unnecessary and tedious.

    Other M clashes so much with the canon of Prime that I think it's safe to say that it is officially no longer canon. Because Nintendo has made it clear that Prime is getting another sequel. If Prime is getting more games, and Other M is getting nothing, I think we can safely assume that Prime's canon is the true canon and Other M was just a bad rip off of fusion's story. I just wish Nintendo would make it publicly known that this is the case. Other M's Samus is not Samus. It is shameful that they dared to try and make Other M the game where Samus finally speaks with a voice. Dread pulled off the voice reveal in a far cooler way; a way that respected Samus's character. Those of you that played know what I'm talking about. I won't spoil the details for anyone still waiting to play Dread.

    • @Cri_Jackal
      @Cri_Jackal ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Removing Other M has the one major plot hole of leaving that frozen Ridley corpse in Fusion with no explanation, it's impossible for it to be the corpse of Ridley from Super.
      They would have to release a game that outright replaces Other M and re-explains that plot point, giving us a Ridley clone that gets killed and recovered by the Federation.
