10:05 Danny listen! It's a Manhunt 2™, a 2007 stealth game by Rockstar Games. It was developed by Rockstar London for Microsoft Windows and PlayStation 2, Rockstar Leeds for the PlayStation Portable, and Rockstar Toronto for the Wii. It is the sequel to 2003's Manhunt and was released in North America on 29 October 2007, and in the UK on 31 October 2008.
I remember the ending of manhunt 1 cut to this kids tv show, likely to represent the snuff film was taped over it. I wouldn’t be surprised if that kid show in manhunt 1 was in someway related to manhunt 2 and the brainwashing tv station if they went the puppet story route I also think the religion story and the puppet tv show story could have been combined. A story about a veggie tales show that brainwashes would have been insane.
Kid's show was the way to enable the sleeper agent personality, implemented to people in brothels or sexclubs making them government assassins on demand.
I'm probably remembering wrong but I thought the TV studio was starkweather productions. The legit front for his real business in snuff. Felt super creepy to me thinking what nightmarish things could have gone on in there late at night.
Honestly I think you have a good idea. I remember watching veggie tales as a kid, I don't think anyone could really make a parody better than twisting it into a show that hypnotizes people into murder in some way.
It’s really funny that that puppet model is from freaking manhunt of all things. Without context that’s the last game anyone would ever guess it was from
The first time I heard that line I laughed my fuckin ass off, like holy fuck couldn't they pick a better line instead of a title drop? Also I know someone is going to make a Morbius joke using that line at some point
1) 5:40, Leo is Latin for Lion, and represents the more malevolent of the two. Daniel Lamb and Leo Kasper represented (at one point) the Lamb and Lion dichotomy prevalent in Christianity. 2) Yeah the killer puppet story was Rockstar North's concept for Manhunt 2. Before ultimately they sent the project off to Vienna. 3) One final thing, it is suspected that the main plot for the third and final Manhunt 2 plot concept was more clearly tied to the CIA, conspiracy theories and even more connected to the original Manhunt before Vienna was closed. Rockstar London made the decision to simplify the story, cut down the conspiracy angle (in the final game the Pickman Project is a rogue Ex-government contractor corporation-backed conspiracy, compared to the original "the CIA are glowing, star whackers that are affiliated with a snuff ring and doing nefarious acts like human trafficking to create Manchurian Candidates, and Leo was a CIA glowie and wants revenge because he was betrayed, and so on) cut down the levels, add that twist of Leo being in Danny's head. There's also some incidental information to suggest that the Cerberus were going to the the final CIA baddies before ultimately being replaced with the Project Militia (or their original MH1 group being revealed as being ex-CIA rogues gone mercenary; there are also the men in back inspired Watch Dogs, and Right-wing nationalist extremist Bloodhounds - it's possible what latter became the Project Militia were based around CIA Black Ops wetworkers, and were one dog head of three that combined with the Bloodhounds and Watchdogs - created the Cerberus) 3b) The CIA Conspiracy angle does make more sense (especially the use of brothels to capture new potential informants, spies, etc, association with patriotic anti-communist extremists - which were both things the CIA were involved with in the 80s to fight communism - wouldn't be surprised if red light/safehouse was originally supposed to discuss the CIA selling crack to minorities, resulting in Cottonmouth suddenly having crime as a major problem when previously nobody had been mugged for years; such the declared supposed state of many US cities before the 80s) in the context of the game being very much set in the 1980s (which was apparently the case) but Rockstar London for whatever reason decided to not go ahead with this timeline setting; likely a result of the original CIA plot being abandoned.
Tbh it's makes more sense that the they are the bad guy, considering that CIA had done fucked up things in the past and worst part is people tries to forget about as if nothing happened.
Tbh to me it makes more sense to see those glowie as a bad guy. They've done fucked up things in the past and yet people are trying to forget about it.
Puppet version is about mind control as well as final product. Actually there were 3 versions of mind control story. The last one was the retail version and the first one was with the puppet, but the second was alternative version of the final one, where there was only one timeline, and Leo was real ingame character (which could be played in coop similarly to "The Warriors" where you could beat the whole game in coop). There are even some sound files that indicates the player could for example hit the Leo character ("Cut it out! We're friends, remember?"). That puppet model was still work in progress, when you look at the texture the bit used for his tie was suppouse to actually be the bowtie (there is even shade on the model for it), plus there were few other models like a toy camera and toy butterfly - presumably they were used in the cutscene where that puppet was instructing the player how to commit assassinations and the puppet was suppouse film the murders (imagine it being stlized as a kid's show). As for the story - protagonist was not connected with the mind control project in any way, protagonist had the face of Leo Casper and was a sleeper agent that wasn't aware of it. There even was a player model in pajamas and with sleeping mask on forehead indicating that some mission took place in the middle of the night (probably in the neighbourhood level) there was even mission in which you kill your own wife probably after some mind bridge failure (don't know if she was controlled as well or connected with the project in any way) in a house, before it got burned by the watchdogs that came after it to capture you and erease all the evidence. It was a lot darker game the whole sexual theme was a lot longer , Judy was not a scientist but actually a Project's operative that work undercover as a hooker (there was even a part with rescueing her from the hands of some unstable guy in the room with the big mirror which probably was the way to kill that guy so he wouldn't kill Judy), protagonist was most likely cheating on his wife and was kidnapped from the brothel by the Project, so they implemented this second personality of government assassin prone to enabling via tv kid's show. Those are just pieces of information that I gathered I kind of put together. Yeah, it was going to be A LOT better game than what we finally got. There were even audio files indicating that protagonist could actually disguise as some of the hostile npcs (for example sexual deviants in the club - I guess there was some parts of hitman like gameplay) plus there are unfinished animations of free crawling or crouching and even walking in crouch position and in retail version hunters sometimes check under the cars - probably Metal Gear Solid gameplay aspects were taken into consideration as well at some point.
I definitely suspected that the version 2 story of Manhunt 2 was going to include Co-Op (P2P likely for the PS3, PC and Xbox 360 - PS2 probably only had split screen co-op)
@@rangerv1 I remember reading somewhere that the CGI alien chef was implying that the whole game was actually a snuff film that got taped over a kids' show.
That clip you see after the credits in Manhunt is to show that the entire snuff film you took part in was taped over a recording of a children's cartoon on a Vhs.
at this point, after all these years of cut content I've see im 100% convinced someone at R* is paid for making horrible bad decisions because they always somehow end up choosing the shittiest option
The way I see it, the shittiest option is usually the easiest and most cost effective option. Given how much Rockstar typically dishes out the make their games, I could see why they would be looking to cut costs. It is a shame that it comes down to price though. Wish they would port games like Manhunt 2 over to PC in some sense.
Sometimes it can come down to them not having the time or technical capability to work on a certain aspect of a game so it would be better to scrap it entirely
I genuinely believe that religious story would've been better, or at least more interesting. Something about the concept of LSD Simulator meets Manhunt meets Noah's Ark or some shit sounds pretty dope, and I can imagine being forced to make choices dependent on how you interpret the characters beliefs.
No way! I was just looking for more information on Manhunt 2's development, especially regarding the Frisbee plot since it seemed so "out there" after playing the 1st game. But given that Starkweather apparently taped his films over a kid's show (if the credits are anything to go off of) it wouldn't be too far-fetched.
I mean the guy's surname is also Casper...you know...the friendly ghost? That would have been the first giveaway to most players who are aware of the original cartoon or the 90s movie.
I like the second idea it could have been where the main character is watching the tv and someone sends him a V/H/S tapes where it brainwashed him and later becomes insane and the puppet would tell him what to do
Nice job covering the early builds and revealing some new info! I wasn't aware that the info about the early story concepts came from a reddit post. I've wondered if the beta Legion design (hooded robed guy with ropes tying a cross to his back) came from the religious extremist concept and got reworked. However, if it never got into development, then it could have just been a coincidence.
The puppet story was originally just a concept design, it was made shortly after the first Manhunt, not to mention is that Manhunt 2 concept doesn't even have name for the main character/protagonist. The only thing that known of the early Manhunt 2 was like you said the U.I. and the puppet, nothing else.
Aesthetically the game was just fine, I agree the 'vintage' details made the game creepier. The concept they went with had potential but yeah, the execution of it was half-assed. The kill ventriloquist puppet idea would've been far more memorable, maybe there was gonna be a Piggsy-style finale where a human-sized version was chasing you around the cemetery....
I think it would've fit with Rockstar's sensibilities as well. It'd be interesting to see how they could've handled a more psychological horror game with a stronger emphasis on humor. For gaming at that time, it might've been to the benefit of the story.
Having Danny in a schizophrenic state might lead the story into more ambiguities is interesting to discuss which one is real or not. MK Ultra could've worked too for the Project to trick their patients into thinking this could be the cure for their mental illnesses. Danny was the most successful experiment so far but botched, unaware by the Project and Danny himself. I dunno where to put Leo in this story other than being the target for Danny
Oh man! This game is immensely nostalgic! It has this atmosphere of a mysterious American city in an uncertain time. The graphics and grainy effect create a vintage VHS horror feel. I feel at home there. I played it for the first time in 2016, and now whenever I watch a video about this game, I get a dose of nostalgia.
11:29 those beta logos are really good quality, genuinely surprised that more of them haven't been reused. The "Frisbee And The Freaks" logo looks slightly reminiscent of the typeface and logo shape from the cut GTA V radio station "Santos Surf". Given the tech presence in the upcoming GTA 6, I could easily see "The Sugar Daddy" logo in the bottom left being reused as the logo for a surveillance company or maybe a conservative talk radio station. The "Rubber Fist" logo would make a good radio station or band logo in GTA 6 as well. Maybe Rubber Fist is more relevant in Vice City the same way that Love Fist is more relevant in Los Santos and San Andreas.
"I am sure someone somewhere is going to say that Rockstar Vienna was closed down because our work on Manhunt 2 was of insufficient quality. This is the kind of thing that cannot be proven one way or another, so all I will say is that this was not the case. I do not want to denigrate what Rockstar London did on Manhunt 2, but as far as I can tell (from analyzing screenshots, previews, etc.) the majority of the work we did at Rockstar Vienna is in the released game. Rearranged and modified, but it's there. I am disappointed and outraged that Rockstar Games tries to pretend that Rockstar Vienna and the work we did on Manhunt 2 never happened - the work of over 50 people, who put years of their lives into the project, trying to make the best game they could. I am proud to have been a part of that team." -Jurie Horneman
Also another possible theory for the first one is that it sounds just like the Bill Paxton movie Frailty, like lawsuit close because a Christian who kinda loses it and go on a very targeted killing spree is pretty much the major plotline of the film, (It's hard to talk about it because I don't want to spoil the movie in case you want to watch it, it's really good, one of the few non comedy movies I will rewatch)
Loving how YTers are now coming around to the Manhunt series and hoping Take Two takes notice. They could do so much with just those two early drafts of Manhunt 2 that warrant their own entries in the series, with the “Frisbee Draft” feeling like it could compliment the main Pickman Bridge experiments much like MK Ultra had numerous sub-projects like The Montreal Project. Knowing how the Housers like to take a concept and make it as dark yet exaggerated as possible…both drafts could have been incredible
I am glad you included Frisbee here. He also looks like Ferb from Phineas and Ferb. Also also, I am impressed Nintendo allowed this. I believe they would allow AO version on eShop and I would buy uncensored version.
i really like the idea of manhunt 2, if an innocent man forced to dirty his hand, it would be interesting if player chose to spare and just run from enemy like metal gear solid, it would kept danny sanity and get the good ending while if you kill everyone, danny will become cold killer and eventually leo will take control as the player keep forcing danny to do the deeds. imagine like if you choose leo route and in the first hour of the game, danny will throw up, disgusted at himself everytime he's killing until he's become numb and apathetic to his victim's as game goes on while leo voice become more depraved as the player kill every enemy brutally like starkweather in the first game while if you choose to spare, the game will become difficult and leo voicewill keep tempting you to kill.
For what it is worth I think the story and setting they went with in the final game is the best. It's such a shame the game has so many problems, Manhunt 2 is one of those games with peak Rockstar atmosphere. Also during Leo's interrogation with Pickman, one would realize that Leo doesn't look like his model fits into the animation and it sounds like Danny is speaking, not Leo. That's because we are supposed to see Danny's body controlled by Leo in this cutscene, it would be the only time in he story for the player to see this. You can still see the actual cutscene during the credits iirc.
i freaking LOVE Manhunt game series! i used to search news often when is the 3rd game will come out, sadly they never released it =( i'm also a fan of your videos =) thanks for making this one! ;-)
I just fucking realized... Daniel LAMB and Leo (means Lion) KASPER, like Casper... the ghost Sometimes, when a plot has such an obvious twist, the less than subtle hints accidentally get buried as coincidence
It was also rumoured that the insane Christian idea was meant to feature Cash after going insane from the events of the first game, honestly the development lore of the game is more interesting than the actual story
What is it with Rockstar and their bald/shaved head protagonists getting the short end of the stick. Vic Vance dies at the beginning of VC, Johnny Klebitz killed by Trevor at the start of 5. I'm just waiting for something to leak out about Jimmy during Bully 2
In Manhunt 2 there are ADs that say *Cash & sons* which suggests that he was able to build a new life which, in by itself, the biggest victory that he could achieve over Starkweather.
@@Invidente7 It doesn't say Cash and sons, It's J.E.C e Sons, why would Cash still use his real name? and the flashback could take place in either 2001(before Manhunt when James was already locked) or 2006(he wouldn't have children Old enough at that point),only If It was James Earl Cash's father or brother that Starkweather kidnapped and killed in 2003,maybe their names were something like Jones,Jack,Jacob, etc Earl Cash
@@Invidente7 as much as I want Cash to be good after MH1 it's logically unlikely, Cash and sons is most likely just an easter egg, Cash moving on is especially unrealistic considering he watches his entire family die in front of him, it's bound to mess him up mentally, not to mention the fact Cash is still wanted, if it was Cash and he used his actual name for his business it would be a jail sentence
The one based off the Grant Morrison & Darick Robertson comic? Yeah, it’s very similar but a bit different: - Happy! was Grant Morrison’s subtle dig at the cynical & violent nature of comics that he despised with a passion and really grew in intensity due to the rise of his former BFF (Mark Millar) & his ultra violent irreverent style. Happy! as a series was sort of a venting experience for Morrison as he reflects on the negative tropes/stereotypes normalized by Millar (he wrote such stories as Kick-Ass, Nemesis, Wanted, and many others with such wanton cynicism) and how, with time, he’s since forgiven him for prioritizing his career since his style was on the rise and he had to strike while the iron was the hottest. The SyFy series kinda just takes the premise and files off the nuance…which is fine since not everyone cares about decades long creator drama 🤷🏽♂️ - Manhunt 2’s “Frisbee” draft is imo the great white whale of unmade game script treatments/concept design due to how ambitious it could’ve been. Danny (or Cash as per what other commenters said) as a “Manchurian Candidate” of sorts being influenced by a Pickman Project puppet (literally) and the implications of Frisbee as a sub-project of the Project + Leo’s possible Pickman (or IAA) affiliation independent of Danny also a driving force in the plot could’ve taken things in wildly interesting directions!
Big fan of Manhunt 2, I particularly appreciate It's voice-acting, soundtrack and atmosphere, wish it had a bit more of replay value or any unlockable extras, like the first game. I gave up in hoping to see a third installment (given the current state of Rockstar), but in a hypothetical scenario, I'd imagine that a third game would cause controversy more for the themes it would portray rather than the actual violence. Would be interesting to see a Manhunt-style game inspired by current social/political tensions or something to that effect. Great video by the way, was a fun watch, didn't know about these unused concepts.
I'm playing M2 right now. Totally missed it when it was new, unlike the first one. Once again, I must appreciate the awesome people who make patches for old games to run on modern systems, even improving them.
The christian idea reminds me of a tree house of horror segment where Ned Flanders kills for god and could be a reference as manhunt 1 actually has an unused audio file of Bart Simpson
11:16 "You don't have to be mad to work here. But it helps" - this one it's actually referenced on a poster in the Hanks Waffles diner footage from GTAVI September leaks. Pretty interesting.
the "voice of god" concept sounds similar to the Outlast 2 plot with the cult leader who turns out had been a reject from a MK Ultra-like project who "heard the voice of god".
Fun fact: The vast majority of the MK-ULTRA files and data collected was destroyed. So we'll never know the full extent of the horrors this project committed.
I remember hearing that the talking puppet plot was gonna take place after manhunt 2 and basically have the mc see the snuff film that Starkweather made in the first game and then started to go insane because of it.
I personally like Manhunt 2, but there is no denying that it had poorly executed ideas and as a result made it an objectively inferior game to that of the first game. Out of the two original ideas for Manhunt 2, I think I would have liked the Frisbee version more. If the puppet were to have some funny lines similar to Starkweather in the first game, then I think the dialogue would have definitely been memorable. Leo’s lines in the final product are just edgy.
7:30 take2 didn't take those videos down, they were taken down because it wasn't supposed to be public i know this because i'm in the discord server of what's left of manhunt community, the guy who owns that build requested them to be taken down
I think honestly you have a point with the name of Daniel Lamb coming from the supposed cut early version of the game. I always felt "Daniel Lamb" had religious tones to it despite the game's plot not really involving religion much at all.
Manhunt 1 and 2 are the closest you can get a third person style of the brutality of Hotline Miami games . Funny both share very similar subject matter . The weirdest and the most annoying part is the console versions of the Manhunt 2 are so heavily censored despite its notoriety in terms of Gore it made Manhunt 1 more gruesome than 2 . For example many of the red and Yellow marker kills in Manhunt 2 with katana , axe don't have decapitation scenes which destroys the immersion in these games which it supposed to have .
No one gives the voice acting the proper respect, Holter Graham and Slocum do incredible work. Also, the twist for me wasn't Leo not being 'real' but Leo murdering Danny's wife being the shocking twist for me. The moment Leo hops over the fence in Domestic Disturbance into Danny's backyard was awesome. Great video, Badger ❤
Yeah the patient interviews with Danny in particular have some amazing voice acting. Apparently Leos VA has narrated some horror audiobooks. Rockstar made good choices with those guys
@@hughwilliam4039 Holter Graham (Leo's voice actor) is also in Red Dead Redemption funnily enough. he voices Sam Odessa in that game whom you can do a stranger mission for I also think Ptolemy Slocum was one of the guys on LCFR in GTA Liberty City Stories
They way they screwed over the R* Vienna team and stole their work on Manhunt 2 without giving credit still upsets me! I take it that was Take 2 making the decisions, I don't blame Rockstar. But it absolutely sucks. Plus the game looked way more interesting in the leaked R* Vienna opening movie than what we ended up with.
The february 2007 PSP build of Manhunt 2 has been released. I almost can't believe it, but it's out now. Freakler made a prx plugin that makes it bootable on emulator and real hardware.
@@Fuchsfein yeah too damn bad I don't have a pc :/ , I have watched it on TH-cam though, just wondering is there are any other versions where Frisbee appears in the game and talks to Daniel or this is the only early version
@@Pinkhairedkilla Frisbee's model is in the files but he was long scrapped when this build was made. Story wise this is already close to what we got. I played it for a bit. Most of the levels crash for me. Maybe there's a way to fix it, needs more investigation. But what's there is super rough and pretty cool. You get to hear a lot of alternate dialogue, most character models are different, there's level design differences and the R* Vienna opening movie made it into this build, but credits were already changed to say R* London and North instead.
To be honest: I would have liked the Puppet idea better than the one we got for Manhunt 2. I think it would have been more interesting. 12:14-12:31 I’d go for the Puppet idea, and I think what they were going for was an aesthetic choice.
I like the story we ended up with. The idea of taking the personality, memories, and training of a stone cold killer like Leo and placing them in an unsuspecting everyman like Daniel is a neat little "Manchurian Candidate" type of scenario. I also believe the 70's aesthetic was just a design choice. You can find a similar aesthetic in Bully.
I played the game today at INSANE difficulty and something unusual happened After the domestic disturbance i got the Bad Ending? I finished the game 4 times and i never got the bad Ending unless i choose it
Part of me wonders if the went through with the puppet idea who would they get to voice it? I feel like they would’ve reach out to brad dourif to voice the puppet since he’s the voice of chucky and it would fit with the dark comedy tone they were going for. especially since In manhunt 1 they got brain cox to voice Lionel starkweather and brain cox was in a movie called manhunt
I know this is a bit late but at 5:02 where you talked about one of the game's cut story ideas is actually just a carbon copy of a movie called Frailty The plot of the movie is literally exactly what you described so it's possible that they just scraped the story for copyright/plagiarism reasons
When i played Manhunt 2 i got weird vibes, how Jimmy and Garry from Bully would be as adults. Especially that Leo and Garry share similar character trails.
I think the frisbee idea would have been super interesting actually. Think of how cool it would have been if they mixed the religion and frisbee idea and R* made the main character take orders to murder people from a demon inhabiting a puppet. That shit would have been lit.
There’s been a leak recently in April where the 0.01 version the psp game has been shown. Somebody uploaded videos of how it looks like for anybody interested
Cash only reached Starkweather thought pure luck. If the *Cash & sons* ads are really him on a new life, then he already won a bigger victory over Starkweather.
His story concluded nicely, anything else involving him would be a drag, it would've been better if it was a prequel, maybe we play as pigzy and see how he went insane
Me personally, I think either one of the scrapped story ideas would have been cool! The religious take on it would of been more spooky I feel like while the serial killer with the puppet would of probably had more of b movie slasher vibe also really cool
Hello! When I was 10yo, I had a friend who was a fan of Manhunt 1 (just like me). I didn't have internet and all news about new games I was getting from him. At some point he said, that Rockstars making a Manhunt 2. And he also said, that news stated that story of M2 will be about mind control through child muppet show, which caused huge wave of violence. My friend definetly had no PSP, so information about the original plot was available somewhere else?
I really wonder what the reasoning was for removing Cottonmouth from the game. It’s very clear it was a deliberate decision, perhaps they felt the game was too disconnected from their in-game universe? Maybe we’ll get lucky and another rockstar dev will give a Q&A on Reddit again someday.
You know what i dint get to see? A beta video of manhunt 1, i assume the pitch was already made before gta 3 started recording cause there is a clear reference to the game in one radio talk, but thats it
It seems to me that MKTV would have been what the teaser was for at the end of manhunt 1. After that, either an adult watching tv, or a kid grown up after watching the tv or show or whatever would be activated by subliminal messages inside of the networks tv shows. Like Dan Schneider with Nickelodeon. All that sex shit.
This game feels like a handheld spinoff to the first game. I’ve got the Uncut PC version and the PSP version, and the PSP version feels better for some reason
In relation to that early prototype , i heard they are compiling all the data into a new pc port that they plan on releasing , but they are being so hush hush about it so take 2 doesnt find out
Manhunt 2 truly is the last of us part 2 of rockstar games over the years imo. Loved this game. Loved the first game too, but I don’t understand how people can dislike this game. It’s just taking the series in a new direction, with a more grounded story reminding me of black ops 1s story. Like said, referencing MK Ultra experiments also like in the black ops series. Manhunt 3 really should happen. I hope so. Eventually.
This does feel excatly like a straight to dvd sequel because it's obvious someone had a really cool idea. Then someone said it wouldnt sell so they re-wrote it. Then someone else said the concepts too different from the first so they re-wrote it. Then the budget got cut etc etc. I actually like all the concepts and think you could combine most of them into one really good remake. A 70's setting where Daniel is a victim of MK Ultra and sees a puppet from a tv show telling him awful things. Work in Leo as a shady goverment guy behind the project. Maybe face off with another killer who underwent the same torture but now believes god is talking to him. Wont happen because Rockstar is just the GTA online machine now but one can dream.

There's also some incidental information to suggest that the Cerberus were going to the the final CIA baddies before ultimately being replaced with the Project Militia (or their original MH1 group being revealed as being ex-CIA rogues gone mercenary; there are also the men in back inspired Watch Dogs, and Right-wing nationalist extremist Bloodhounds - it's possible what latter became the Project Militia were based around CIA Black Ops wetworkers, and were one dog head of three that combined with the Bloodhounds and Watchdogs - created the Cerberus)
3b) The CIA Conspiracy angle does make more sense (especially the use of brothels to capture new potential informants, spies, etc, association with patriotic anti-communist extremists - which were both things the CIA were involved with in the 80s to fight communism - wouldn't be surprised if red light/safehouse was originally supposed to discuss the CIA selling crack to minorities, resulting in Cottonmouth suddenly having crime as a major problem when previously nobody had been mugged for years; such the declared supposed state of many US cities before the 80s) in the context of the game being very much set in the 1980s (which was apparently the case) but Rockstar London for whatever reason decided to not go ahead with this timeline setting; likely a result of the original CIA plot being abandoned.

Tbh to me it makes more sense to see those glowie as a bad guy. They've done fucked up things in the past and yet people are trying to forget about it.
We really could've had a greater game with a more fleshed out, darker, thought provoking story.
Sad.
Apart of cerberus being back or connections with the first game, everything else was spot on man! It was going to be such a good game. Shame.
And no leo doesn't stand for Leonardo from ninja turtles other wise people will think that's tmnt reference
I definitely suspected that the version 2 story of Manhunt 2 was going to include Co-Op (P2P likely for the PS3, PC and Xbox 360 - PS2 probably only had split screen co-op)
any proofs?

That clip you see after the credits in Manhunt is to show that the entire snuff film you took part in was taped over a recording of a children's cartoon on a Vhs.
at this point, after all these years of cut content I've see im 100% convinced someone at R* is paid for making horrible bad decisions because they always somehow end up choosing the shittiest option
They have several studios all over the planet so it's easy for stuff to get lost, shifted around, budgeting cuts.
Dumb comment
Sometimes it can come down to them not having the time or technical capability to work on a certain aspect of a game so it would be better to scrap it entirely

I genuinely believe that religious story would've been better, or at least more interesting. Something about the concept of LSD Simulator meets Manhunt meets Noah's Ark or some shit sounds pretty dope, and I can imagine being forced to make choices dependent on how you interpret the characters beliefs.
Prototypes of MH1 for the PS2 & MH2 for the PSP were uploaded online a few days ago, there's a higher quality Frisbee model in the Manhunt 2 proto
No way! I was just looking for more information on Manhunt 2's development, especially regarding the Frisbee plot since it seemed so "out there" after playing the 1st game. But given that Starkweather apparently taped his films over a kid's show (if the credits are anything to go off of) it wouldn't be too far-fetched.
Don't you know how the concept came to light?
The whole MK-TV and the puppet idea reminds me a lot of Halloween 3
Congrats on the 100k dide!!!
Oh hey it’s Larry Bundy Jr
Thanks, Larry!
Oh man!
The surname Bundy reminds me of someone...
I mean the guy's surname is also Casper...you know...the friendly ghost?
That would have been the first giveaway to most players who are aware of the original cartoon or the 90s movie.

When you step on a Lego
I like the second idea it could have been where the main character is watching the tv and someone sends him a V/H/S tapes where it brainwashed him and later becomes insane and the puppet would tell him what to do
Nice job covering the early builds and revealing some new info! I wasn't aware that the info about the early story concepts came from a reddit post. I've wondered if the beta Legion design (hooded robed guy with ropes tying a cross to his back) came from the religious extremist concept and got reworked. However, if it never got into development, then it could have just been a coincidence.
I refuse to believe Leo’s voice actor ever thought the “it’s a manhunt” line was supposed to be said seriously when being recorded
I get that it's the title, but that's what you call it when you tear an area apart looking for someone dangerous. Danny definitely fit that bill.
it was back then when humor wasn't broken and not everyone was autistic
so yes the line was good
Well… it was in fact a manhunt
The dark comedic concept seems to be similar to what the game Naughty Bear is.
I think it would've fit with Rockstar's sensibilities as well. It'd be interesting to see how they could've handled a more psychological horror game with a stronger emphasis on humor. For gaming at that time, it might've been to the benefit of the story.
I remember that game and you’re right it is pretty similar

Glad to see you talking about Manhunt 2. I used to be on the old project manhunt forums when a lot of these discoveries were made
Is this some kind of Manhunt, too?
manhunt 2 is overwhelmingly underrated for no reason, it's literally awesome and it's also batshit crazy that it's set in the gta universe
Manhunt 2 is also the last game from Rockstar to set in 3D universe, since many people thought it was GTA VCS.
I noticed the GTA3 Kuruma and immediately felt like it was the bridge between 3D and HD.
@@Vin80_for me It was a Red King member stating"I'll make that prick run from here to San Andreas"
Manhunt's atmosphere and "realistic horror" direction are still unmatched. The closest that comes to it is Kane & Lynch 2.
Never heard of that "Evil Puppet" version. Very interesting
Honesty, the headpiece idea Badger had would've worked
If ONLY Rockstar Vienna didn't get shut down when developing the game.
I am proud to have been a part of that team."

My favourite part was when leo said to danny its time to hunt men
I am glad you included Frisbee here. He also looks like Ferb from Phineas and Ferb.
Also also, I am impressed Nintendo allowed this. I believe they would allow AO version on eShop and I would buy uncensored version.
Nintendo allowed what?
@@Овсяный They allowed the game to be released on the Wii.
i really like the idea of manhunt 2, if an innocent man forced to dirty his hand, it would be interesting if player chose to spare and just run from enemy like metal gear solid, it would kept danny sanity and get the good ending while if you kill everyone, danny will become cold killer and eventually leo will take control as the player keep forcing danny to do the deeds. imagine like if you choose leo route and in the first hour of the game, danny will throw up, disgusted at himself everytime he's killing until he's become numb and apathetic to his victim's as game goes on while leo voice become more depraved as the player kill every enemy brutally like starkweather in the first game while if you choose to spare, the game will become difficult and leo voicewill keep tempting you to kill.
They basically took this idea for RDR2 in open world were Arthur with low honour becomes more selfish and bitter.
Yes, Manhunt games have such cool atmosphere! Top notch!

The one based off the Grant Morrison & Darick Robertson comic? Yeah, it’s very similar but a bit different:
- Happy! was Grant Morrison’s subtle dig at the cynical & violent nature of comics that he despised with a passion and really grew in intensity due to the rise of his former BFF (Mark Millar) & his ultra violent irreverent style. Happy! as a series was sort of a venting experience for Morrison as he reflects on the negative tropes/stereotypes normalized by Millar (he wrote such stories as Kick-Ass, Nemesis, Wanted, and many others with such wanton cynicism) and how, with time, he’s since forgiven him for prioritizing his career since his style was on the rise and he had to strike while the iron was the hottest. The SyFy series kinda just takes the premise and files off the nuance…which is fine since not everyone cares about decades long creator drama 🤷🏽♂️
- Manhunt 2’s “Frisbee” draft is imo the great white whale of unmade game script treatments/concept design due to how ambitious it could’ve been.

It's a rather common saying (among amusing signs), probably not a reference
the "voice of god" concept sounds similar to the Outlast 2 plot with the cult leader who turns out had been a reject from a MK Ultra-like project who "heard the voice of god".

Manhunt 2 is a Great Underrated Gem i liked it just as much as the Original.

I’d go for the Puppet idea, and I think what they were going for was an aesthetic choice.

I know this is a bit late but at 5:02 where you talked about one of the game's cut story ideas is actually just a carbon copy of a movie called Frailty
The plot of the movie is literally exactly what you described so it's possible that they just scraped the story for copyright/plagiarism reasons

Thanks for a great Saturday morning badger
You know what i dint get to see? A beta video of manhunt 1, i assume the pitch was already made before gta 3 started recording cause there is a clear reference to the game in one radio talk, but thats it
It seems to me that MKTV would have been what the teaser was for at the end of manhunt 1. After that, either an adult watching tv, or a kid grown up after watching the tv or show or whatever would be activated by subliminal messages inside of the networks tv shows. Like Dan Schneider with Nickelodeon. All that sex shit.
This game feels like a handheld spinoff to the first game.
