It’s very possible that the Queen was jealous, the Queen was a marvelous public servant in her role, which was difficult. She gave so much to the role, but the Queen probably thought it she could have the political freedom of being a Minister would have more than her rather ceremonial role of being queen. MT however was SO out of her element in the rich snobby world of parlour games, outdoors, and extravagance. MT is working class, the Queen from wealth.
Just give Gillian the goddamned Emmy. I’m only two episodes in and I’m enthralled

For all the talk of the Queen not getting on with Margaret Thatcher, which might be somewhat true based on the fact Margaret Thatcher was doing some pretty radical things. But post her resignation she never showed signs of dislike quite the opposite, she attended her 70th and 80th birthdays. Something she certainly never had to do. She also made her a Knight of the Garter very quickly. Something she has not done for Tony Blair or Gordon Brown. She also gave the go ahead for her public funeral and chose to attend, the first funeral of PM she has attended since Churchill.

Order of Merit, Order of the Garter, Ceremonial funeral and a heredity baronetcy for Denis; strange the Queen would do this for a PM she didnt get on with! Its not like she has offered so much to any other recent PM. I think the dislike between them was overblown for narrative reason or perhaps the personal and political views of the show runners.
I think it just a rivalry between 2 women. But Elizabeth and Thatcher are a really good friend.
Probaly because thatcher was a woman amongst men in politics. In those days that took a lot of courage , the queen herself was in similiar circumstances and they probaly understood the sacrifices they both made

She also, like so many British people, mispronounces "apartheid". The vowel sound of the last syllable should be as in "eight", not as in "tide".

What a stunning performance by Gillian Anderson. The voice, the mannerisms, the facial expressions, you really got a sense she put everything into it. I have no doubt she spent countless hours watching footage, reading books and listening to speeches of Thatcher. Flawless portrayal of a very difficult role.

While I think working moms tend to have a lot in common that it usually based off off which social class they belong to. Middle class moms definitely lead similar lives, but to compare Thatcher and Windsor as having a lot in common when one of them is the Queen of England is misleading at best and ignorant at worst.
Exactly. I might expect Netflix USA to make this mistake (I'm American, myself), but I'm surprised that a production of Netflix UK doesn't realize the chasm created by their class differences, especially in that era.
I’d recommend you watch season 4 to see how they handle the relationship. You’ll be surprised.
That blows my mind that Gillian Anderson, who played a very American Scully from the X Files also played a very British Margaret Thatcher soooo perfectly. Holy crap. I didn't even know it was her until I saw the comments. How is that possible that she did such a phenomenal job on playing Thatcher?

The Thatcher parts have been way more interesting than the Diana parts of this season so far; I'm 6 episodes in.
It’s same for other 4 episodes as well. Diana-Charles scenes are extremely boring and unnecessary, I don’t know why people still find their relations interesting and worth gossiping even today.
I just finished watching season 4 last night. All the Diana parts were less than. The man playing Charles looked almost always looked as if he was holding in a painful gas bubble.

One fact about Thatcher: she's one of the only Western European leader that opposed the reunification of Germany in 89. She was scared that a united Germany would eclipse Britain as the main power in Europe. She even called Gorbachev to increase troop presence in the East.
And so gremany did.
She wasn't "one of the only" Italian prime minister Giulio Andreotti did not support it and French President Mitterrand also didn't, despite the fact that he believed it was inevitable.

"The UK's head of state and sovereign were both female"? They are one and the same. Thatcher was head of government, the Queen is head of state.
I was thinkin that too. And I would say the term sovereign is really more appropriate for monarchies like the UK or Canada (where I'm from) than head of state which imo is more appropriate for republics.

The Good Samiritan world wide has always been remembered for his kindness - Money never came into it... unless you were Thatcher and were trying to change a countrys economy. No there is more to Money than Money - not to get to too deep - Money is only a form of energy - like food or water. He could saved the man without money - easily. Its called friendship and providing someone with faith in Humanity. Thatcher took more than she gave - dramatically in my humble opinion.

But without money to back up those intentions he would never have been able to help. Thatcher is saying that good will alone is useless without the power/resources to apply said will.

Whilst it’s true they didn’t get on for a large period of the 80’s by the end of Mrs. Thatcher’s time in office they had a huge mutual respect for each other with the Queen attending Thatcher’s funeral, something she only did for two of her PM’s.

It's because for years men have been expected to be outside their homes and working. They're just being men. Women on the other hand have been associated with taking care of the household. Tis the reason why working women are appreciated a lot, they handle the household as well as their professional duties. Somehow housework and familial responsibilities cannot be isolated from women.

For those comparing Meryl's performance to Gillian's, I simply say you are comparing apples and oranges. The performances are based on two different displays of entertainment: film vs. tv, which both come with their different advantages/disadvantages. Also, the film was a biography and was not meant to to be seen through a political lens, a monarchial lens (like The Crown), or a British public lens, but a general veneer of Thatcher's life. Also, biographies tend to be kinder towards it subjects, which The Iron Lady was. Meryl's performance was great, Oscar-winning of course, but here Gillian was gifted the opportunity to portray Thatcher through a much different lens. I assume Thatcher herself would prefer and her most ardent supporters prefer Meryl's interpretation to Gillian's. So comparing the two doesn't solve anything. Both Meryl and Gillian are fantastic.
I could listen to Anita all night. Love her style and poise! I’ve been watching her series on the crown and can’t get enough. She’s stunning and inspiring.
Windsor and Thatcher had a lot of respect for each other, even when they disagreed. I don’t like Thatchers Irish policies and her sanctions stance but to earn the respect from the queen that only Churchill had gotten before her is quite incredible, especially given how much Windsor loved Wilson

Maybe it's rather about being not the only one women and being mother and having important position in politics was rather unique 🤔
There’s a clear contrast to two mothers and two fathers. When those two were born the woman’s only role was in the home. Hell, one of the main reasons Thatcher lost two of her original tries for a seat in the House of Commons was because people questioned her being able to balance motherly and work duties. So the fact she broke through that to become the first female leader of the western world is notable. And for these two women running a nation which champions the old times, it’s notable to commend them for being both mothers and leaders.

The Queen represents an older, more moderate, more noblesse oblige conservatism which IMHO came into conflict with Margaret Thatcher's neoconservatism which saw shrinking the State as the only priority above everything else.
If the queen could vote she probably would have been a wet in the Tory party or a blairite of the labour party.

Honestly i know I'm alone but i found Gillians performance way over the top. The voice sounded like she smoked 60 cigars a day and came back from the dead.

I had my doubts about Gillian Anderson playing Thatcher but after watching the whole season I think she did a splendid job. I will have to watch Iron Lady again to see if she outdid the great Meryl Streep.
They had a great mutual respect. HMQ was baffled by MT initially, as she had never encountered such a strong female political force. However, towards the end of Thatcher's premiership, they developed a warmer relationship. She did indeed award her the Order of Merit, but more tellingly, HMQ changed the rules that only royal ladies can be the Order of the Garter so that Thatcher could be admitted to the highest order of chivalry in the UK, and totally in the Queen's personal gift.

What Anita Rani doesn't explain is why Gillian Anderson has portrayed Thatcher in the style of Baron Silas Greenback from 80s hit cartoon, Danger Mouse....

As the program unfolds, you have to wonder that the Queen doesn't take her responsibilities too seriously. A Constitutional Monarchy leaves the actual power in the hands of the Prime Minister and Parliament with the Queen as essentially a figurehead.with limited responsibilities. Responsibilities mostly of show and not substance.
The British monarchy hasn't had any real power since Queen Victoria died in 1901. Even then Queen Victoria had more power of personality than power of the Crown.

This "tension" is a total fabrication. Thatcher was appointed Lady of the Garter and awarded the Order of Merit, the highest honour in the land and the exclusive gift of the Sovereign. Furthermore HM the Queen attended The Baroness Thatchers funeral, only the second PM to receive such honour since Winston Churchill himself. Scarcely the actions of one with intense dislike for the other.

Yes, it was a ongoing insider. During WWII, Queen Elizabeth, The Queen Mother would shoot rats as aiming practice. So The Crown had a rat run across the counter in series 1(unsure of which episode, will further investigate) and also in the episode you spoke of !

Apparently I am in the minority here. I thought Anderson's portrayal of Thatcher was forced and affected. It bothered me so much I fast forwarded through some of the longer segments, especially when her lips and chin started wobbling from strain of keeping them in an unnatural position.

And this rocky relationship is what makes her Order of Merit truly earned. Despite her stern resolve and cold demeanor, she loved her country and wanted it to flourish.
I have watched documentaries on Margaret Thatcher, and I never realize until now how much conservatives are so self centered. To think that she is the only person for the job. Power really goes to peoples brain.

Actually, the Queen and Thatcher got along okay. They respected each other, but the media always made it seem like they were at each other’s throats.
There's a reason why the Queen showed up at Thatcher's funeral. Technically the Sovereign does not take part in their Prime Minister's funerals. But Lilybeth showed up for 2 of her PM's funerals: first with Winnie, and the second with Maggie. Shows the respect that she had for both PMs who saved Britain from ruin.

Yeah but that's not really the truth. The Queen showed up on Thatcher's 80th birthday and on her funeral. Protocol dictates that the Sovereign does not show up to their Prime Minister's funerals, to not show favoritism. But ERII showed up on Churchill's and Thatcher's funeral. Only the Queen and Thatcher and their husbands knew of their relationship. And unlike with Diana, they kept their feelings towards each other pretty secret.

What I haven't heard anyone comment on following the release of the latest season of The Crown is how Margaret Thatcher - whom I strongly supported - sadly completely screwed up the handling of the expiration of the lease on Hong Kong's New Territories. Thatcher thought her victory in the Falklands War meant she was absolutely smarter than everyone else and she could not in anyway be told her demand to publicly renew the lease was the worst possible way to handle the situation. If she had followed the advice of her councillors Hong Kong would still be a British Crown Colony!
