- Is your Rover not shifting into gear? Watch how to fix a broken gear shift trigger on a 2016 Land Rover Range Rover Sport, and perform this hack today to make sure you don't get stranded tomorrow. Will add step by step procedure below if someone asks for it.
Compatibility: Similar procedure should apply to all L494 Range Rovers (2013 to 2022), and is likely very similar on any modern-day Land Rover model with this poorly designed trigger mechanism.
Tools Needed: 1/16" x 1" cotter pin, pick tool, and a T8 torx bit.
Robb’s DIY Rating on 1 (easy) to 5 (hardest) Scale: I give it a 1! Anyone can do this repair with the right tools, just take note on how the pieces come apart to make assembly easier and to prevent losing any.
I would nominate you for a nobel prize for coming up with this and for a community service award for posting it. Lifesaver!!!
Thank you kind sir! Be sure to check out my coolant leak video (another hack life saver), and more I have coming in regarding air shocks, brakes, and more.
I wanna say thank you for making this very special and informative video, I came across your video two years ago when I was researching the problems with L494 because I was in the market for one, and now that I had gotten mine and leaving with it for over a year now and me with my family on a 12 hour plus road trip and the same problem you mentioned happened to us.
The first thing that came to my mind was wow I remember what’s to do and look for your video in my saved for later files on TH-cam and did just what’s you instructed and me and my family are home safe, wanna say thank you again for your very informative videos!
@@wanterman5641 fantastic! I’m about to embark on another known weakness-the coolant crossover pipe. This time with aftermarket parts supposedly superior to the terrible factory parts. Be sure to subscribe to see how this project goes and to get future RR content!
You, my friend, are a life saver. This video needs to be “liked” by all of America.
Best comment ever! Be sure to subscribe for more Rover content!
Robb,
You made my day!
Except I didn't get stuck in the desert, I had this exact situation with my RRS.
Your video saved me a lot of time, trouble and money.
I bow down to you! Thank you so much!
Steve from Luxembourg
You’re welcome! It’s great to hear this solution has reached 🇱🇺!
Cannot thank you enough for sharing this video! My husband and I were stranded in a parking lot. Your video saved the day (and our wallets).
Cancel the tow! Robb's Garage has you covered!
So glad to hear that you were able to get it fixed and drive away!
You are a genius and my hero. Stopped at a red light at a busy intersection on a busy hwy, put it in park, to take my parka off, and 2016 rangerover sport, gear shift button broke when I tried putting into drive. Stuck in park. Police and tow truck came. Lever broke for putting into neutral. Had to get it towed to my work, and followed your steps to fix the problem. You should be given a medal. For real. Thank you.
Thank you for the kind words, just glad I could share the solution to my horrible problem with everyone else. Be sure to subscribe for future Range Rover Sport content! I’m about to embark on a major coolant repair that every newer Land Rover owner will eventually encounter, but instead of OEM parts I’m using aftermarket parts that should resolve it for good. Stay tuned!
Video saved me a bunch of money after my RR gear shift stop working in the middle of parallel parking. Magic tip on the emergency neutral. Allowed me to get out of the street. Made a. Make shift cotter pin out of an umbrella rib and was back in action in less than an hour! Thanks for the hack! Well done!
Yes! I love the make shift cotter pin-ingenious!!!
This video saved my butt! Thank you! Worked exactly how you described. We were stuck in a parking lot with an auto store a few blocks away. Glad i wasn’t in the mountains like you were.
Awesome! So happy to hear it!
My son goes to UNR-we’ll be sure to come eat at your restaurant next time we’re in Reno!
I was stranded after work because of this problem. Hubby bought the pin for $0.45 and fixed it just like you showed! Thank you!!!!
Sorry you were stranded but happy to know you got back on the road. My hope is that more Range Rover owners see this and make the repair as a precautionary measure so they don’t get stranded. Cheers!
Youre the man Rob!!! I Was stock in a snowstorm on christmeas eves hating my life. That video is a real gift to any range rover owner.
Thanks again
Thank you, thank you ... thank you ... I couldn't say it enough . I was stick 150 miles from home at the in laws and the shifter trigger went out on a Sunday late afternoon before driving going home . I was searching how to put the car in natural to get it out of the garage and I found your TH-cam page . I had no Idea, but I manage to go to Home Depot get the cotter pin and fix it- and got home - I'm giving you a donation and a Big Thank you.. I'm now a fan 😀
Thank YOU! I’m glad this video has helped so many people get their Rovers back on the road. Safe travels!
Thanks! Worked perfectly once I got the cotter pin the right size. I had to shave a little off the 1” pin.
Fantastic, thank you!
lol! so my kid just called me, he was stuck in the middle of the street, he just pulled out of the driveway. well, your video saved me a ton of hassle. I can't thank you enough. I didn't have a cotter pin, but i did manufacture something out of a hardwood flooring staple. I got the car moving again after we pushed it back in the driveway...i also didn't know about the lever under the cupholders, so that was also awesome to learn. thank you!!!! Found someone on amazon that makes these out of aluminum, so that might be a forever solution.
@@davidl7672 fantastic! Glad my bad experience can help so many others.
SPOT ON ROBB!
Thank you so much for the information, I know I saved a TON not having someone else working on it!
Excellent! Glad to hear it! Hopefully some of my other Range Rover videos can help you save $ as well. Several more in the chute, just haven’t had time to edit/post.
A.big thank you from Scotland thankfully happened as i was reversing into my driveway stuck in park and blocking neighbours driveway

Outstanding Rob! Figured out where the micro switch was from your video, and holding it closed allowed me to select drive to get home where I can do the real fix!

Sending a message from Ghana 🇬🇭. Thanks so much you are a life saver. I hope the new range hasn’t got those little plastic in them. Theme a lot. 🎉
Ghana! Wow! Thank you for watching all the way from Africa! Glad it helped.
Thank you Robb!!! This worked like a charm! Unfortunately I had the RR towed prior to seeing your video but nevertheless thank you for posting this, cotter pin worked great!!!
Sorry you had to tow, but happy to hear you fixed it! Be sure to subscribe for more RR info in the future.
170k kms for mine and my wife was in the Bunnings (hardware giant in Australia) and I got the call. I TH-cam searcged in the car and bought the parts as I arrived - back on the road! Many thanks and agree - what a critical failure point for this design flaw!
Brilliant! So happy you got her back on the road!
Absolute legend… used 1/8” and 3/4”, a little finessing to get in… worked great. Lovely instructions. Silly design.
@@michaelgraham6267 brilliant! Happy to know you got it back on the road.
this hack absolutely works. I just need to fix the cotter pin in place with epoxy as you recommended. Love it.
Great to hear!
I did mine 2 weweks ago following another dieo on here. I thinK the cotter (split pin here in the UK) was a size bigger as it fitted in the channel more snugly but did need the 'eye' at the end bending slightly. No glueing needed at all, I've done well over a thousand miles since and consider it a permanent repair although I di order a repair kit from amazon which I shall keep in thr glove box. A reply on the other channel from a lady that tried it said that a 'bobby pin' works too. Im guessing that;s a hair pin?
Just happened to me and the tow guy said he towed another RR the night before for the same thing, This worked like a charm thank you so much. For what they charge for these cars it is disgraceful how cheap some of the parts are
@@smartassandy sorry to hear, but so happy to know this trick worked for you!

Robb, gotta echo everyone else's comments here - you're a lifesaver! The cotter pin fix worked on my 2017 Range Rover Sport. Thanks a ton. Did you end up finding a new home out in the desert for Robb's Garage?
The sole reason I share videos on TH-cam is to help others, so it always brings me joy to hear success feedback like this.
I did indeed buy land for a new 1,600 sq ft garage! Haven’t broken ground yet, but look forward to sharing the experience with everyone in the future.

I will try this. Will let you know it it works.
Please do!
Amazing! Thank you!
@@angiebarthol1431 you’re welcome!
I did this and it worked however I did it with the car on. Transmission and gear error came up. After fixing I used the igap tool but the engine light remained on. Any ideas why I would still get a algorithm based and signal compare failure
I don’t know why it stayed on after using igap, but here’s two possible remedies: (1) With the car on, put it in neutral manually using the method I show early in the video, then put it back in gear. (2) Disconnect the battery for 10 minutes (located in the rear near spare tire or 3rd row seat if you have one) then reconnect and start the engine. Reply back if that solves it or not!
@@robbsgarage so this morning I cleared again with the engine off and it was cleared. The pin was also kinda iffy meaning it would work some times. so I replaced it !! I do thank you for your fast response.
Thank you save my customer 1800 for new part and a tow. 20min to do repair
Great!
Super glue works perfectly with this plastic.
this is just literally got me out of a jam, but I had to use the paperclip instead. Thank you so much!
#mcguyver
I’m so glad to hear it!
Legend mate
Thank you, hope it helped.
It certainly did mate. Land Rover had no help to get us outta trouble other than on the back of a tow truck
Where do you get a cotter pin from?
Any hardware store will sell them. If you’re located in the US, you can buy them individually at Ace or True Value; whereas Lowes and Home Depot will likely make you buy a boxful.
Where did you obtain the pick?
Most hardware stores sell them, or you could purchase online. If you don’t have access to a pick tool, you could try a small knife or flat blade screwdriver.
BTW, what is the name of that part? Do oyu have a part #?
The cotter pin I used was 1/16” x 1” long. I don’t know the official name of the Land Rover part, but I’d refer to it as the gear shift trigger switch.
My RRS has 105k and I got stuck in a Walmart parking lot with the new groceries. After a few minutes of exasperation, I found your video and damn you are amazing. I followed all your instructions to the T and got the shifter working again. I used superglue instead of epoxy so am wondering if I should reopen it all again to use epoxy?
Congrats on the fix! Epoxy will hold much stronger than super glue, but I have to admit that I still haven’t taken the time to epoxy ours and months after making this video our cotter pin is holding up just fine. This reminds me that I should open it back up and epoxy the thing. Stay in touch and let me know how the super glue holds?
Yup the super glue didn't seem very strong. I know the feeling of indecision on reopening it. Getting the piece off the hinges could so easily have gone wrong. BTW I wasn't stuck on a mountain like you were so I didn't need the step to get it in neutral, I was in Park and that was fine. Has anybody tracked down the part number or OEM part. I want to see how expensive it is.@@robbsgarage
Thank you so much you are a lifesaver
