    My goodness, Julie was SO beautiful at this time! Hard to believe how nervous she was, and I've not often seen Letterman so completely helpless. It would appear from this that her character on Airplane was firmly planted in her actual personality! I'm still in love with her after all these years....

    I took care of Julie's Mother in a nursing home I worked at in Ohio for 3 years Her Mom said Julie was discovered by Mrs.Ford ( Presidents wife) and her career took off after that Her Mom had pictures of Julie and her brother on her wall Her Mother had modeled and had also dated Dean Martin She had a picture of herself dancing with Dean She was so proud of her childrens accomplishments She was great to talk to with all her stories

      Is this the way Julie really is like the way she was on Letterman or was she just having him on like a little skit. If she is this shy in real life she must have to reach deep down in herself in order to do a role like airplane. She reminds me of Katherine Hepburn. 😊

      @@fede018 Excerpt:
      "When the actress Julie Hagerty came on the show to promote a sequel, Airplane II, the result was a cringe-inducing exchange between two socially awkward celebrities. Hagerty was nervous to the point of paralysis, answering questions abruptly, though not rudely. She was polite, but clearly shy. Letterman did nothing to put her at ease. In fact, her inability to perform seemed to anger him, his temper rising.
      After a few questions, he didn’t become flustered so much as antagonistic. But the way he communicated his fury was by pointedly matching her in small talk, being boring to comment on her boringness, mocking her through imitation. It was brutal."

    Letterman admitted he learned over the years some tactics to help ease kind nervous people. The Letterman with experience would have said “Hey! I loved the Airplane film. And this whole audience loved it, and love you. You’re among friends.” There would have been a loud applause and that might have helped.
    The comedian in him would love the comedy that could be worked in that situation, but she was so sweet he’d go the other way.

    • @DaviMourao
      @DaviMourao 6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      I don't think so. Letterman being a shy and private guy himself, deep down he probably sympathized a lot of with her.

    • @starmessenger
      @starmessenger 6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Letterman wasn't perturbed with her, per sé, but he was very upset about being put on the spot like that, having to carry the entire conversation. You can be extremely uncomfortable with a situation, but it doesn't mean you're furious with the person who is responsible for leaving you high and dry. Imagine having millions of people watching you on your own show, and having to interview a guest who seems lost at sea, and can only give perfunctory answers such as "sure". I would hate to be on that hot seat!

    • @humanbeing2420
      @humanbeing2420 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Letterman is ultimately an entertainer, and if he wants to continue in his job he needs to entertain people. He's obviously always thinking about how his show is playing for viewers at home, and when he gets into a difficult interview like this one, he gets anxious because he knows he's going to lose viewers as they change the channel to something else...

      I'm probably gonna get a lot of flack for this, but I've always found her voice to be... well... kind of annoying. She's seems sweet, sure, and kind, but the way she speaks comes off to me as if she is either speaking to a toddler or coming on to someone Marilyn Monroe style, making everything she says, even when she's serious, come off less so.
      But hey, I'm just ONE individual with an opinion. And I guess most know that saying about opinions and buttholes... 😁 Everyone has one

    Don, you are my new hero! I can't tell you how happy seeing all these videos again makes me. And the quality is just great. Could you share your process for digitizing from tape?

    • @dongiller
      @dongiller  7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Thanks, Gary! But a hero I'm not. :) The process is pretty straightforward:
      1. Digitize tape to DVD burner in "real-time." Then finalize DVD-R.
      2. Stick newly-burned DVD-R into MacPro and convert to .mp4 file via "Free DVD Ripper."
      3. Quick edit (to select a particular guest or comedy segment) in QuickTime Player.
      4. Import the selected edit into either iMovie or Final Cut Pro, depending on the complexity of the project. Fine-tune edit, then convert to .m4v file and upload that to You Tube. Some take maybe an hour, others take days.
      The video quality varies, depending on the source, of course. I've got some pristine copies and some poor copies. I select the best I have at the time -- there are a bunch of earlier uploads that need to be upgraded, as I've since acquired much better copies, but that's down the line -- and sometimes I'll edit together disparate sources. Sometimes I'll have good video but poor audio in one source and bad video but good audio in another, so I'll combine the two so that the good audio syncs with the good video. Not all that simple, as I have to do it manually, by ear and sight. But I like the challenge, especially when it works.

    • @garygronk3863
      @garygronk3863 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks, Don. Do you mean recording to an actual DVD player/recorder, not a PC or Mac's DVD drive? Also, which DVD rip software? I've yet to find one that does a good job.

    • @dongiller
      @dongiller  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Correct. The DVD-R serves as a backup to the converted .mp4 file, which is itself backed up onto several other drives. I mentioned the DVD rip software: "Free DVD Ripper."

    • @garygronk3863
      @garygronk3863 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    How do you decide what to upload? And are you working on anymore compilations?

    • @dongiller
      @dongiller  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I think everything's determined by whatever time is available at the moment as well as requests that don't take much of it. There are further compilations I plan to put up, but they take considerably more time to prepare, like the Fugitive and Regulator Guys, and there are a few that I can't get started until I finish digitizing the shows to a certain point, like Flunky, Pekar, Theodore, Leno, Ask Mr. Melman, Peace Through Dramatization, Etiquette, Frank & Fred, and others I can't think of right now.
      Currently I'm going through the writers' strike months of 1988, and I'm finding all sorts of goodies unrelated to LN that I want to put up, like Tom Smothers' Yo-Yo Man compilation, and Tonight Show appearances with Chuck Berry, Sammy Davis, Jr., and k.d. lang.
      What slows things down are work projects that pay the bills, and there are periods where I can't get anything else done until they're finished. So, again, it's all a matter of time.
