This is awesome, I hope Meinl adds MIDI to the next version of this cajón, beat makers and music enthusiasts all over the world would use it paired with a DAW
This thing absolutely should have (and imho must have) some kind of MIDI out. It's meant to be a professional instrument and this feature is a must. The built in samples are not bad, but they have the musicality of a very cheap electric drum kit: if you hit it hard or soft, it plays the same sample but with different volume levels. Good electric drums respond similarly to acoustic drums and not only vary in volume but the actual sound changes. This makes it sound more natural and less digital, this electric cajon sounds very digital. As a practice tool it's way too expensive and for professional use the sounds are too limited in quality and can't be changed because there's no midi out.
Thanks for your input on it. I agree with you it's more for practice, and it can be pricy for that. It would be better to find a way to integrate some acoustics in it. I will give your feedback to Meinl ;) thanks
They could have at least added some round robins and velocity layers... Only one sample for every single instrument is insanely outdated and behind the times. You could literally just be looking at nine samples per note and the sound quality would be 100x better. That would barely take any extra time to do. And with no midi out either? This could actually be interesting for music production or electronic live performances, but that's not possible when you're stuck with the bad internal sounds.
I had to return 3 of these back to Sweetwater as twice the top left pad stopped responding and once that the number display sank in. I think there are quality control issues with this product that Meinl needs to address
I own this product too. It honestly needs a hardware equalizer and compressor when recording or playing live especially on the rock drums. I wish we were allowed to swamp sounds in and out of the pads. Now I am sure someone will be able to hack the actual sound module to replace the sounds. Also it’s price is now $329
At first glance, I thought it would be very expensive and way out of price range, but $300? Now I'm very interested! Thanks for sharing that info in the beginning of this presentation.
I'm conflicted. The purist in me says, "no way!" The experimental side of me says, "this could be interesting and fun". Thank you for another great video.
I have one of these Roland pedals. The meat thing about it is that you can phase in and out how much electronic, or natural, sound that you want. Blended to whatever percentage that you want.. Roland EC-10M Electronic Cajon Mic Processor Btw: not an endorsee in any way. That being said:. I want one of these meinls too!! But this pedal mght be a good groundbreaker for you. As, you can grow with it.
@@Squirrelconga Thanks for mentioning the EC-10M. I saw a video demonstration a few months ago and came across a used one for half price at my local music store a couple of weeks ago. I decided to try it. It's been a lot of fun so far and, like you said, you can phase in and out to get the sound you want, which is a nice feature.
@@chrishenricks6405 Yeah man! If your like me...you overuse it a bit at first...then I kind of fell out of love with it....but kept forgetting to pack a 57 mic clip.. It was then, when I was just using it as mic..that I started really using it as a tool.
Great video as always! However, the cajon itself... It sounds awful. :( Like a bad mobile app. Why wouldn't they add some hit strength detection?? It could have been a great option for playing cajon silently, but this is bad... Maybe the next version will improve it. For now, I'd rather play drums on my phone than this. :D
Every electric drum set I have played and every one I know that has one sooner or later the pad sensors go or be come inconsistent. I'm assuming it's the same technology
If I were to buy a digital Cajon, it would be the Roland EC-10. The EC-10 is an acoustic Cajon with velocity sensitive triggers to layer the electric sounds over the acoustic. It is way more dynamic than this.
Hi ^^ On another note, it would be interesting to see you test the PSUBCAJ6B model. This time a real Cajon, it's a sub model equipped with a microphone 👍
Now on the next video play the acoustic snare craft one and other acoustic one then compare the digital sound on this cajon, waiting for the perfect sound matches..
It is very interesting. I wish you could edit the selections assigned to the pads. For instance, the cymbal that comes with the rock drum is not the one you want to use all the time. Thank you for your review.
Can anyone help me please. There is no much snare sound on my cajon and everytime I try to play it ,it sounds like I am beating a table pls give me a solution
Why on earth would you need/want a completely digital cajon? I can see incorporating a couple velocity sensitive trigger pads on the sides near the top for uploadable accessory sounds on an otherwise acoustic cajon (hint, hint) but, ALL digital? On top of that, why didn't they at least put an additional trigger pad where a cajon pedal would hit? Fyi, you can practice silently on your lap and it translates just fine to a cajon. This thing is really poorly thought out but, I'm sure people will buy it.
@@driftinHank29 True, but the Roland doesn't do either very well. DG De Gregorio made the Centaur Electronic/Acoustic Cajon for a little while a few years ago (it's no longer available). It on the other hand has a really nice and very responsive acoustic sound and mics up beautifully. it has three trigger pads on the right side, a foot switch to cycle through 30 preset "kits" and an sd card slot for user uploadable sounds. The electronic portion wasn't perfect but it was definitely usable and a huge step in the right direction. I have a friend that plays one. He got it super cheap from a guy who bought it but never used it. I've been trying to buy it from him since the first day I played it since he never uses the triggers (for some reason). It really does sound nice acoustically. Anyway, my point was that this style of cajon can be built and they can perform both tasks well. It's just a matter of execution. Someday, someone will build a good one and when they do, I'll buy it.
it should use piezo transducer to synthesize sounds in real time, NOT trigger pre-recorded samples. then, it will be organic and digital at the same time.
Great review..I would use this alongside a normal cajon for the extra sounds..is it completely portable...could you use it outside?...thanks for the great in depth review
This electric cajon could be very useful, but unfortunately it is not. It would be perfect if you could program the pads with sounds, for example a tom sound on the top pad in the middle. Also to adjust each pad in volume would make this box more useful for professional use. These 10 pre configured settings in my opinion are more or less just gimmicks.
Nice review, but... I think you were too delicate or you dont want to say painful true directly into Meinl eyes ;). You pay 300 euros for several electronic pads. The Cajon has no value as an acoustic instrument. Custom sounds cannot be used. You cannot play with your music. This electronics is the most banal form.
Oh, man. That's just horrendous. What were they thinking?! It's embarrassing enough to be seen playing a cajon, but an electronic cajon is just laughable.
Nothing wrong with playing a cajon. Easily transportable instead of a full kit. Also, it can save your hands in years to come if you’re constantly gigging and bashing the original wooden cajon. It’s a cool idea.
Theres is no reason for this is to be in a Cajon format, when you can carry a smaller lighter package and sit up not bent over with proper posture. It doesnt even have USB or MIDI! Dont buy this.
this defeats the purpose of a cajun.. is better jut have some rubber pads on a table or play this in a keyboard, or just add the notes in your DAe if is gonn Abe like this... is not a cajun anymore, it got no acoustic resonance at all and is limited to Only smash very lightly on those pads.. I tested it and the music store also said, so complete rubbish and a toy, a joke... as a drummer I agree..
