From my experience with finishes & masking, the best masking tape that I have found to seal edges & stop wicking the best, try using the green Frog 🐸 Tape! The factory edge adhesive is said to expand when moisture hits it then sealing any voids! So after applying it you could moisten it with water or just a little thinner so it should seal before you even apply any finish.
Okay, I bought a raffle ticket. Enjoying watching you do this body finish. I'm doing a guitar body finish for the first time ever right now. Purple rattle can for color, clear lacquer rattle can for the outside. I want it to look low-fidelity.
Idk, I'm kind of split on the amber stain. On the one hand, I love the enhanced natural wood look, and it really makes that grain pop. On the other hand, that bright almost perfectly white wood, to me, was just calling for something a little more interesting. And there's all kinds of cool stuff you can do with that open grain... It's gonna look fantastic when it's done though, so, eh. lol I'm kinda thinking you probably SHOULD have gotten rid of all that dust, at least before finishing. lol
Thanks Ben for the very interesting and informative videos! Any chance you can add a clock in the background? I find it interesting with how much time you spend on each part of the build and find myself looking at your watch for reference!
I did the same thing you did with the backplate with my headstock lol. my maple neck blank was like a 1/2 in too small so i glued little piece of ash from my body blank to it lol
I have an in-progress guitar (loose take on an LP) using spalted maple for the cap. The density varied from moderately hard to Balsa soft and squishy. I finally broke down and purchased a large bottle of thin superglue and slowly applied it to the maple. It soaked it right up... and it's possible I may be able to polish the top to a rather nice sheen without any finish (TBD). What it did do is make the piece much easier to work with because it now behaved in a much more predictable way. A word of caution for anyone that attempts this... you need excellent ventilation during application of the glue and for any additional wood removal with power tools.. The CA glue will off-gas like mad and you don't want to breath it or get it in your eyes. Power sanding will heat and aerosolize the glue which is also not ideal.
Thanks Ben for this Funny awesome pt.3. Ben have you thought of a branding Iron ( crimson logo) ? How is the Number Guitar doing? Is that Next? Peace be With You and Family
Hi Ben, fantastic tutorial! I have a piece of Ash almost identical that'll become a bass for my daughter. when did you glue the neck to the body and what with please?
I like the wipe-on lacquer finish. Having a small indoor shop (that shares space with the house furnace), spraying finishes is not something I like doing. This is a good fix for that.
Hi I don't get the whole ''don't put glue on the trussrod'' hassle. The rod I'm getting is all sealed in some rubber material, how is glue around it going to affect it's workings? That's like saying wood around it would affect it's workings? I could imagine anything like it, if the rod wasn't sealed, but in that case, why not just put heatshrink tubing around it? Why take a risk. I could see that epoxy between the rods could cause issues, like the thing jamming and then you break off the nut or so, but how is that going to be the case when it's sealed in shrink?
Ben, I'm going to be building an 8 string bass (in octave pairs). The problem is I can't find a bridge for it. Do you know where I can find one? It has to have individually adjustable saddles for each string. I can only find two, one by Schaller, that has been discontinued, and the other by Warwick which costs $400!
Are you still doing live builds on crimson extra? Or is thst just Q&A channel? I enjoy watching the love builds while working on my masters degree at home. Need something to break up the work load!!!
@@CrimsonCustomGuitars awesome can’t wait ! I Enjoy all the videos thank you ! P.s. I think you need another 100hr build project something insane; it’s been a while !
@@CrimsonCustomGuitars I’m never disappointed with these videos tbh!! Im really in tune with the hand tool build as it’s something I plan to do myself 👍
They were moved to the Extras channel a few months back. There hasn't been a Monday build livestream for the last couple of weeks (since finishing this bass and the red Hofner). Combination of catching COVID and being busy at HQ iirc.
hm. not sure about the staining. for me, the natural 'white' wood looked way better. the satin finish on the other hand, really nice! dunno if it would 'pop' as much as it does without the stain.
Not a fan of the amber stain. I really liked the "monochrome" look of the wood. Perhaps a light grey stain, if that exists, perhaps just no stain at all.
For someone who just blew dust through a hole, you seemed too confident by throwing a lot of finishing lacquer over the back of the instrument without even looking if the finish was bleeding through the front...
I want to buy more tickets but can’t. Although happy that the number of tickets is going up for your genius and hard work. I’m a bit nervous. You really can’t rig this raffle? 😂😂😂
The reveal of the grain figure with the stain was mind blowing. I was sceptical about the color when you mentioned it, but it really looks quite lovely. My last ash body I left natural, but I might try a light amber on my next one. My ash isn't nearly as lovely as yours is though. Erm... Anyway, thanks for sharing!
yes, not so much recently, but absolutely. nowdays it is more.. I wish I had spent a few more minutes on this or that particular bit of it rather than full on 'this thing sucks' but there will always be things I'm not happy with on every build.
I’m a bit disappointerd. As a bassplayer and guitarbuilder I wiuld like to see something more challenging, that once in 5 years or so you can be bothered to build a bass Not a standard 4 string pj config fretless, but more like 7 string fanned fret neck through or somesuch. Maybe next week?
Having watched a number of your videos now I would say that all of your ideas should be written in pencil, not ink so that they may be erased when you change your mind.
@@CrimsonCustomGuitars not that i hate the color, amber tones just bring to mind vintage instruments and the body shape is modern. Still like the build brother.
I dig the gratuitous use of the word 'spooge'. Also, great guitar-building. Bass-building, I mean.
"Tastes like ash." The finishing is always when the true magic of the wood comes through. That figuring and the "party favor" holes make me smile.

Agree, black and white contrast before staining looked so good, but I doubt there is a finish that would make it look natural and white, maybe wax?

Wasn't sure of the single cut body, but after seeing it with the neck attached....looks damn good. Cheers
For small areas leaving a very fine finish I find Carbide Stanley knife blades are rather good. Not in the knife but used as a scraper on edge

Have you tried reversing the P bass pickups so DG strings are closest to the neck ? makes more sense to fatten the thinner strings
Definitely going to be an extremely beautiful bass!

Hey Ben, can you do a fretted to fretless bass conversion vid for us one day please. Choice of materials to fill the fret slots etc?
The last episode of this build did that. He filled ("spooged") the fret slots with epoxy.
Love how its coming out, i had thought that you would have used more of your glow in the dark in the logo,,,
Youve got to do everything humanly possible to be your best, Agreed!

How much white powder will that hold?
As usual a fantastic craft, you are an artist!
I do not like the color of the stain, similar to old yellowed pine!
I think these logos would look cool being branded into the wood, especially on mahogany.
Panic rush… usually needs to extra work for me, down the line 😒. Loving this bass series!

God I hope my ticket comes up for this
When filling cracks and dents with sawdust, super glue will significantly darken the swarf. Regular wood glue will not.
You should get Scott Devine to demo it for you. He'd probably go nuts over this bass.
I really wanted a matte clear :(
up early, 5am, not running router until 7-8
Maybe should have used some the glow dust in the logo to make it stand out
For someone who just blew dust through a hole, you seemed too confident by throwing a lot of finishing lacquer over the back of the instrument without even looking if the finish was bleeding through the front...
Oh I looked! The beauty of this finish is how quick it dries though and I was careful to spread it very quickly so there weren't pools to drop through
I can't believe he removed the natural white from the wood 😮
it’s the fabulous swiss cheese bass!
Should've done the glow-in-the-dark for the logo
You should definitely name this, Wormwood.
good shout!
Too bad he didn't put the glow in the dark stuff in the logo on the headstock. That would have been cool.
That's what I thought too. Maybe it was suggested during the livestream and was decided against.
@@ianthomson9363 You may be right.
The body shape reminds me of a Spear bass. Could have filled the logo in the glow in the dark epoxy.

The vast majority of single cut bass guitar shapes are awful to behold. I like this one though. I really do. Tis a rare thing you have created, sir.
Thank you James, I took a bunch of inspiration from some modern bass builders crossed with my recent guitar designs and it sort of fell together.
I watch a ton of your videos... Full of info, instruction etc etc.

glow in the dark logo.. too much?
Not in my book.
This build seemed a bit rushed to me. Almost a "let's just get this over with" kinda job. I was expecting a bit more "pizazz" but oh well.
It was 6 livestreams, plus other days sanding/finishing off camera. If it seems rushed, maybe that's down to the style of the edit.
