Love the finish. On the subject of hand made "errors". I can buy a perfectly machined guitar from a list of manufacturers. When I order a custom guitar I want to see the blood sweat and tears of its creator, that gives the guitar a unique personality, a story if you will. Love your work Ben.
18:40: That's the way that "Big D" guitars headstock logos are made of. It actually works pretty nicely, especially when the powder is sealed off by another layer of superglue on top or the guitar finishing oil.
Love how you seem to roll with the punches as this build gives you various challenges along the way. It truely shows your high building IQ and experience.
Golf club lettering paint wold be good on the headstock logo, it’s deep fill paint. I write this before I’ve watched the video of course so I don’t know what you did but for future reference 👍.
Isn't the "probably not necessary" attention to detail the very thing that separates ok work from great work? And doesn't it reflect the pride one takes in one's work? I believe the answer to both questions is yes.
To matt the finish I usually use the indasa double sided soft sanding pads 180 or 220 grit which are a lot finer than regular sand paper plus they are perfect for round edges 👍
Ben very nice. & I love that watch it looked like it had diamonds on the bezel?? I always try to pause the vids when they show a closeup of your hand so I can try to see what watch your wearing. 👍👍🎸🎼🎹👨🏻🦯👨🏻🦯
I don't know why I've never thought of taping my finger before tapping in CA glue. My fingertips are all perpetually covered in Starbond for how much I use the stuff. Such a simple yet genius idea, thanks Ben!
For future reference if you wanted to keep all of the powder then you could’ve added a small bucket/Tupperware container under the headstock while you were wiping it in for lack of a better term. I just had that thought and wanted to share. I am sure you didn’t care about the few grains of powder you lost to the floor
Hi Ben! Thanks for your huge sharing. Just wanted to Share with you that , even if it’s on nowadays mood, perfect is not beautiful to me, it can sometimes become boring and tasteless (not sure for that word… poor english speaking, sorry) , otherwise little imperfections let better feel the natural material to me, closer to natural perfection, and also the human work made with it. Long life to crimson guitars!
Looks amazing already! The Guitar Finishing Oil works beautifully, I've used it on a few raw maple (necks), and swamp ash and mahogany bodies after staining them with waterbased dyes. I love the look and feel when cured, but putting on the first layer is so incredibly satisfying it's quite therapeutic 🤣👍🙏
a fair warning on the use of pigment powders in superglue or epoxy: an inconsistent surface sanded down like that will collect dust you can't easily remove which will dull the result. Do a second coat of pigment and sealer and give it the full time in needs to set, plus a few hours. 24 hour epoxy will still be soft enough in 24 hours to get dust stuck in the surface. Add a day or two
Did I see roundwound strings? Maybe I’m heavy handed with my basses but I go for flats on a fretless. I’d worry about marking the fretboard. Especially a nice one like this.
I love the little rant in the beginning about hand made stuff having imperfections and modern humans expecting perfection. Im making my first instrument(bass) now, almost done too, but I did everything by hand so I know where all the imperfections are and it bothers me. My only goal for this bass was for it to be playable. I havent got there yet, but it looks 5x better than i expected so far. Today I'm leveling my frets and/or doing the electronics. Then after that I just gotta install the tuners and strings and plug it in and see what happens! P.S. Im making a passive MM Stingray looking thing
I love everything about the base except for the finish color.. I think it would look better with a burst. A a darker border around the body would looks better with the wood of the neck in my opinion.
Ben, Have you ever considered making the bottom edge of the Headstock the Logo? Having the lower profile of the Headstock your Logo, with the Logo Guitar Body carved into the Headstock in relief, leaving the top of the Headstock for In Line Tuners? I hope you catch my drift?
Ben, I did hear on another builders video, and no I don't remember who's, but they painstakingly applied adhesive tape to the cavity, I have done, it can be a pain but they said conductive paint overtime degrades and loses those properties, your thoughts??
Me encantaria que todas tus obras maestras incluyeran la fecha de cuando fueron terminadas, toda obra maestra debe tener la firma del que la hizo y la fecha de cuando la hizo para la posterioridad. Saludes desde costa rica....
Hey Ben, love the bass. A). Can you use the high build finishing oil over stain? B) would the wipe on lacquer get to a high gloss with more coats? Keep up the amazing builds!
I'm not Ben but I hope that's okay. Pretty sure the oils can be used over stains, although it's been a while since I've used them though. High build over spirit stains. Haven't used this particular lacquer but have used other wipe on products. Prep the guitar. Apply the first two, very light, coats with 1500-2000 grit sandpaper. Then build coats with a rag. Maybe another coat with the sandpaper to even things out. More coats does give more gloss, but not (just) because of the thicker clear coat. That thicker coat gives you more space to polish and buff before going through the finish. That's were that mirror shine comes from.
The spirit stain dries more quickly so do not blend as well as the water based stains but all work well together. We have even used water and spirit based stains blended together. When using the wipe on lacquer make sure each coat is completely dry before applying the next. th-cam.com/play/PLp6z5fUMeeAYb4-gZOHOZau-Hmkjvmfkj.html DC
Well Ben I don't know why but I have a sneaky suspicion that your neighbor is trying to ruin your videos as the lawnmower always seems to be running while you are filming 😄😄
"I don't think I can procrastinate any longer" ? Ben do you not know yourself? I'm sure you could procrastinate for another whole episode without finishing!
Love the finish. On the subject of hand made "errors". I can buy a perfectly machined guitar from a list of manufacturers. When I order a custom guitar I want to see the blood sweat and tears of its creator, that gives the guitar a unique personality, a story if you will. Love your work Ben.

Brown paper bags work really well for knocking back finish as well without the powder to clean up👊🏼
3:30am here! Glad I’m awake for the release! Cheers Ben! Have a great Thursday!
Morning! What a way to start your day!
Handmade every time for me. Something special about it.
Love how you seem to roll with the punches as this build gives you various challenges along the way.
It truely shows your high building IQ and experience.
See, glow in the dark in your logo, lol. Youre most welcome, love the build, most understated and elegant.
I'm so glad it happened!
I honestly didn't mind the logo, and how it looked at the start of the vid, I like imperfection.
In the camera, the sheen looks the same...but the detail and shimmer in the wood grain is worlds more vivid after the oil
This is my favorite build to date
I really love that neck fitting, it is so organic.
This is looking great, can’t wait the end result and hear what this beast sounds like
that is 1 of my fave finishes!

Amazing work, your instruments are all very beautiful, but this one stands out!
Something satisfying about repairing pianos while watching this..
Really love the look for this bass...the neck is absolutely beautiful.

Rubber thimble works fine.
the finish is so cool, so simple to apply and it looks amazing and i bet it feels even better
Seriously cool looking bass
The finish looks great! Oil finishes are such a good option for home workshops.
Thank you, I totally agree!
Loving the build

@crimson custom guitars what are your thoughts as a luthier about richlite fretboards compared to ebony ?
Really like this build, great shape, Ash and finish. I would have preferred flat wounds though. Better for the fingerboard too.
I do like the Peavey style headstock
Love this Bass man. The aluminum tube in the truss rod access hole is a really cool idea. The wood is lovely. Killer brother. ✌️
Isn't it a brass tube?
Use a vacuum with brush attachment Ben please? You are my guitar building hero by the way. Nothing less than perfection every time.
Tape and tap! Brilliant! This has already saved me so much time not just cleaning my figure of CA lol, thanks Ben Cheeers. Muwhahahaha!

You really did like the T60 headstock.

I just bought a couple tickets too!
Thumbs up for experimenting :)
I'm glad he took my suggestion even if he didn't know it was my suggestion! lol
Recursive mind control.. time travelling? Cool!
Will you guys be going back to the main shop.?
I have a similar piece of wood as the body with tiny inclusions I want to use as a fretboard. I was thinking of stabilizing with clear epoxy. Needed?
Would there have been a practical way to preserve the white colour of the body? I thought it looked exquisite with the black cavities. Just curious.🤟
29:58 You had to make the nut slot slightly smaller??
I didn’t catch how that was done
Baking soda and glue works

Ben, will the water based finish adhere to a shellac undercoat? Shellac would block the grain raising.
I love everything about the base except for the finish color.. I think it would look better with a burst. A a darker border around the body would looks better with the wood of the neck in my opinion.
I actually prefer a natural wood finish. I really like how it made the grain pop out.

Cool idea, would be worth experimenting with a piece of scrap wood.
Absolutely awesome. Do you have a way I could send a pic of my bass build .
Send it to guild@crimsonguitars.com DC

Conductive paint does not degrade in my experience. However, double sided tape and adhesives certainly do. Ben
"I need to do something in here! BURN IT!" 🤣
Does the glow in the dark powder actually work tho?
Cool looking bass dude 🤘🤘
Thank you I'm very interested what you built as guitar builder but just seeing only no money to buy it😢
So nice

It's looking very nice indeed. I'm not 100% in favour of the body shape- I don't like corners on guitars, but as a whole it all works.
Can pumice powder be used to turn a gloss poly finish into a satin/matt finish?

@@CrimsonCustomGuitars Great, thank you.
Can I use your "Water Based Wipe On Guitar Finishing Lacquer" over the top of your "Stunning Stains" once it's dried in?
Yes you can. All our finishes are compatible and work very well together. th-cam.com/video/CUl7mRImcvU/w-d-xo.html DC

Bro, you had the perfect opportunity to do a Zero fret.
Is there going to be Nebula 3?
what is that neck pickup in the nebula guitar?
It was something I designed and we made in house.. want one? 😉
@@CrimsonCustomGuitars maybe one of these days when I mod an old peavey I have
Nothing is perfect even the timber you build with, It adds character to the guitar
And anything water based causes the timber to swell
That’s a nice looking guitar though
Vacuum pumice powder surely?
Is "yucky" a technical luthier term?
That it is 😆
With the tearout could you not have mixed the glue and dust together and then applied to the tear out?
"Beautiful and precise", and soulless. Let's hear it for handwork!!!!!!
Hy Ben.. I notice your daughter's guitar is still sitting on the ground in the shop ... did you forget to give it to her?
The original live streams for this series were a couple of months ago.
Isnt it a bit to warm to wear a sweater
Brand the brand name into the wood...works on cows.
Well Ben I don't know why but I have a sneaky suspicion that your neighbor is trying to ruin your videos as the lawnmower always seems to be running while you are filming 😄😄
I was expecting pyrography to tidy up the logo...
That would have worked.. I need to get me the kit to do that.. more tools! Yay!!

Ha ha ha yeah you are the guitar nut
Ben,...get an air compressor.
Why is your daughter’s guitar still on the wall in the shop?
This was filmed while I was still working on Jasmine's guitar.. I was trying to get ahead of myself a bit.. didn't work!
WTF with the underwater sound?
They all have a hammer side, but pliers? come now. Orders potpourri gets chainsaw. 🙄madness
Absolute gorgeous body
FF Grade Fairly Fine, probably not..
And yet artificial relics are all the rage... Go figure..
Perfect sucks for custom hand-built anything. No personality comes through via CNC.
How can you use guitar finishing oil on a bass? Shouldn't you be using bass finishing oil?🤣🤣🤣
I’m sorry to say mate don’t be to pedantic or you will never be satisfied comes from experience
