One of my all time favorite Funk songs to play on the guitar is Climbing up the ladder by the Isley Brothers. But there is a lot more to it of course.

@Oliver_B Jazz III is not that thick, but I also find it really good for strumming. Also, try a 3.0mm stubby, I find it's overall better than the Jazz III, maybe not for strumming tho.

P S you’ve probably found out by now, but are you referring to hybrid picking?

He just doubles the strums between the next note. If you’re strumming 16th notes, the in between triplet should be 32nd notes.
