Simply because the manual transmission takes up a lot of space. I wanted to put the motor where the transmission goes so the entire engine bay could hold the battery. If I used a manual transmission it would have not allowed the battery to fit under the hood. It would have opened up a lot of gear ratios to choose from, that's true.
@@EVSwapGreat Job!! - I'm looking to do a Nissan Leaf swap into a Land Cruiser 79 Series pickup. What Transfer Case are you using? Could you tell me your top speed with this setup and if the motor keeps up with the power demand? What is the kW rating of your specific Leaf motor? If you had a second chance would you use the gearbox? The Land Cruiser I will be converting will be used for a Safari Vehicle, low speed application, not exceeding 45km/h. Because of the low speeds do you think connecting it straight to a transfer case would be the way to go? it certainly opens up a lot of space for mounting batteries but at what cost? do you find you get a decent range? What is the kWh of your battery pack?
@@GabrielPaterson99 My truck can do about 70 MPH on the highway in high range. In low range the top speed is about 35 MPH. I use an 80kw motor, it is adequate but I think a 110kw or 150kw motor would be a lot more usable. It's a tough question about the gearbox because on one hand it's nice to have the extra ratios to choose from but on the other it's a large piece of metal right in the middle of the truck and it's heavy. So if you can do without then the whole package become smaller and more streamlined. My pack is only 30kwh which is enough for 70 miles depending on how I drive.
Adapters are essential!
I figured that out later on! Stay tuned for more!
Always use axle stands in addition to the jack!
Always! Unless I'm just reaching an arm under for a quick adjustment the jack stands always go under.
Interesting project man 👍
Thank you!
Hi man, nice job and thanks for share... but we don't see the coupling of the Motor?
Coming in the next video!
nice job buen trabajo thanks for video
Where are you sourcing the Black Box's input shaft with yoke for the intermediate drive shaft from the motor?
I bought a used Chevy input shaft and had a machine shop weld and machine it into an adapter.
How thick was that steel you made motor mounts from?
1/4 or 3/16, can't remember
Curious why you didnt bother with using a manal transmission to help with gearing down the motor

is this a repost of an old video, it seems like I've seen it before ?
No I don't think so. If you've been following any of my forums posts in various places you probably saw the process, but the video wasn't put up yet.
What is that car in the video.
1982 Unique Mobility Electrek! Check out my older videos for more info on that car!!
