    Thanks for watching! What Q's do you have about your break/transition? Any specific things you're struggling with?

    • @LB-gl8gy

      Right now focusing on small bubble/bump in my register when I slide from chest voice into head voice (and vice versa). It goes away after my first slide, but it’s there when I begin nonetheless. :)

    •  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      This was great, thank you! Would you advise this exercise for men like myself with a break between my chest and head voice? Or are there other exercises that would compliment the ones in this video as well?

    • @SingingStraw
      @SingingStraw  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @ Yes for sure. The break between your chest & head voice is exactly what I'm addressing here. With men, its often more pronounced, so be patient as it does take time. Stick with this routine daily and you should see progress and improvement!

      Hi Whitney! The "crack" in my voice happens very low in my register, for the last few bottom notes that are hard to maintain in my head/mixed voice and for which I sometimes switch to chest voice (in French we say "throat voice") in order to maintain the same volume. My early classical training means I can't sing in chest voice, it sounds horrible and is painful and tiring for my vocal folds. Any advice on smoothing out the very bottom of my range so I can maintain the mixed/head voice throughout? Thanks a lot :-)

    So glad I found this channel! Living in a small NYC apartment, I've always struggled to keep my voice in shape due to a fear of annoying neighbors with traditional singing warm-ups. Straw singing allows me to warm up as much as I please.

      @@jestes7 absolutely! Even those times when I accidentally strain I’m identifying it right away now, and I’m naturally less strained when it happens. I’d love it if you can make a video that helps to get rid of “sliding” on a note! I tried everything and it’s a hit or miss. Good question! Try adjusting your posture (stand if you're sitting, make sure your spine is straight), and pay attention to your breath (you want it to be steady and consistent). Then try slowly moving your head around as you sing, shaking your head like you're saying "no". Hopefully that will help to relax those muscles - if not, try doubling or tripling the straws! • @SingingStraw

  • @yuliasynya3998
    @yuliasynya3998 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    While doing these exercises, my break happens much lower in my range than when I sing. Usually it's F-G above middle C, with the straw it's right in the middle C. Why is the difference so big?

    • @SingingStraw
      @SingingStraw  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yep, you will feel acoustic shifts differently in your range with the straw - don't worry about it! It's just because we are adding a resonator and effectively lengthening the vocal tract when we use the straw. You're not doing anything wrong, and that break will smooth out in time!

  • @roryhochstein9251
    @roryhochstein9251 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Really enjoyed the exercises! How do you typically tell what register you’re singing in (i.e. chest voice or head voice or mix?)

    • @SingingStraw
      @SingingStraw  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Short answer, it's somewhat subjective. These register names mean different things to different singers and vocal coaches. What matters is, are you getting the sound you're wanting, and do you have healthy, easy access through your range? Treat your entire range like one voice (because it is!) and if you feel breaks or transition points, use the Singing / Straw to help balance and smooth them out. Hope that helps!

      So happy to hear that you are noticing a difference with the straw!! :) The straw is a great tool and will definitely help you continue to grow in your voice, but it's jus one piece of the puzzle! Hey Whitney I have PMS voice syndrome quite severely (sorry for tmi) and when I’m having swelling I notice my voice has to be a lot more quiet to connect. Am I still getting the benefit? (I feel like I am)
    I also notice I can get more cord closure if I go off the straw into a Vee with my lips, does that mean I would benefit more from the new product you’re offering the professional straw with 2 mm? (I believe you said 2 mm). I wanted to get the smaller straw anyway, just wondering if it would be helpful for me in dealing with PMS voice syndrome issues.

    • @SingingStraw
      @SingingStraw  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Generally when I’m swollen I go bigger, so two 3mm straws or the PRO 4mm would be great for that! The 2mm is great for intense workouts when you’re in good shape (not a lot of swelling).

    What does it mean if there sizable gaps in your sirens as you do the 5ths and octave exercise? Not just a shift or wobbly-ness at the break, but extreme wobbly-ness and even notes missing entirely? What should I focus on to work through that in a healthy way?

    • @SingingStraw

      That happens, it takes time! If its happening both on the straw and on regular vowels (without the straw) it wouldn't hurt to see an SLP to have your vocal folds checked out. If it's just the straw, but not in your regular voice, then keep at it - it just takes time to find the balance in the straw!

    • @SingingStraw
      @SingingStraw  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hard to know without hearing you sing, but it's normal for breaks to happen when starting out with the straw! Keep up the practice and see if you can move to 2 straws at once. It should get smoother in time! If you're worried there's damage, I always recommend seeing a Laryngologist as they can diagnose any medical issues.

    • @nbadger160
      @nbadger160 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Julie, Have your voice scoped by a Otolaryngologist that knows the singing voice. Very few doctors understand the singing voice, in my experience and in my opinion. Possibly you need a voice teacher to coordinate your muscles, skill and technique to access your head voice register. But without HEARING and seeing what's going on there is no way to know what is happening for you. An Otolaryngologist is one place to start.

    My voice flips from chest to head. What do you mean by digging in?

    • @SingingStraw
      @SingingStraw  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Rooting your feet in the floor, and connecting to the power of your speaking voice as much as possible!

    What does it mean to feel a tickle in the back of your throat when going about the exercises?

    • @SingingStraw
      @SingingStraw  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That may be an indication of strain/inflammation, so in those cases, I would back off on the volume and try to find power and intensity in the vowel shape as opposed to at the vocal fold level. Straw will help train that balance, and it takes time. Good luck!

    can singing straw be a substitute for a normal vocal exercises

    • @SingingStraw
      @SingingStraw  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I wouldn't say complete substitute, but you can do SO much work with the straw, so when you can't sing full voice it's a GREAT way to work out your voice!

    If it feels like an ab workout am I doing it right?

    • @SingingStraw
      @SingingStraw  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't actually suggest focusing too much on the ab muscles as they can restrict airflow and increase tension sometimes. Instead try some of the tips in our breathing video! th-cam.com/video/aSXOTeFF5tk/w-d-xo.html

    I’m a lyric tenor, where do I start with you in this?

    • @SingingStraw
      @SingingStraw  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's hard to know exactly without me hearing your voice, but I suggest starting an octave below me, and if that's too low - wait a few exercises, then join in with me (again an octave down). You know your voice best though, so go with what feels good as a starting and ending note!

    can i use a regular straw?

    • @SingingStraw
      @SingingStraw  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Size matters! A regular straw is too large in diameter so it doesn't provide the same back pressure as the Singing / Straw :)
