I appreciate that! I wish I had been shown a video like this when I was in the hospital after becoming paralyzed because it would have shown me that it was possible to independently catheterize as a C5 quadriplegic. Thank you for watching and commenting!
Thank you so much for sharing this. I’m female, and bedbound at the moment. My movement problems are neurological, and then an injury on top of it that robbed me of what little mobility I had. I use a pure system. It works well, but it’s not something that I can independently control, as someone has to be around to empty the tank into the toilet, as I have no way to get there to do it. Thanks again. I am very impressed with your kindness and absolute bravery of doing this for on TH-cam, for other disabled people.

I've been a t6 para for 21 years now and have gone through much trial and error since then. I'm currently spending most of my time in bed as I'm aging and making it more difficult to get around. I do all of my needs from the bed which takes some ingenuity. I now use an indwelling catheter most of the time as it cuts down on accidents. When not using the indwelling I use a condom catheter. This seems to work best for me Mason. You make it seem pretty simple Mason, we thank you for making these helpful videos. God bless!
Dear Mason very helpful video I really appreciate you doing this for us folks who are new to this self-catheter thing. God bless you and thank you again for this informative video

I don't, but I remember when I was recovering from inpatient hip surgery at 8 or 9yrs old since I wasn't able to move my legs for probably six weeks due to them looking like an A, I had a portable urinal that I used for I think two and half days in the hospital and then continued using it when I came home. After I used it, somebody would dump the urine into the toilet for me and it'd be ready for the next time I had to go. Having my grandparents down here for my hip surgery was very helpful for mom and dad especially when I came home
Haha! Using your teeth has two benefits. First, It allows you to do things that you couldn't do if you weren't using your teeth. Second, it helps build your immune system! It's a win-win!
Can you tell when you need to go? Ex. do you have any "signals" your body gives you when your bladder is full? As a T4 complete I start getting a tightness feeling, bladder spasms and some AD when my bladder is full. Thanks and keep up the great content!
Most of the time I cannot tell when I need to go. However, I do have signals such as muscle spasms or AD if my bladder is too full and needs emptied. Thanks for watching and commenting!
I have middle of urethra missing. So I had operation to Cath self in stomach. So, no exposing private parts( I thank you for making a video, I'm sure helpful for some). I don't think I can make a public video even with my stomach. I don't mind showing a nursing/ medical student or such if asks Bless you.
I know that the procedure to catheterize in the stomach is common and have heard good things about it. I feel like, after my accident, so many doctors, nurses, etc. saw me so nothing is "private" on me now. Haha
Hi Mason - and thank you for your videos. Have you ever tried using a catheter extension to just void directly into the receptacle instead of going into the bag first and then dumping it?
I have not because these catheters are closed system catheters, which means they are an intermittent catheter that is self-contained in a collection bag.
Here in Brazil we use different materials, I use it completely differently, there is a probe/relief catheter so I adapt it to a plastic bag (coloplast conveen leg urinary collector)and leave the probe inserted in the canal until the bladder from one bath to the other, so the urine is running out in the platinum bag that I tie to my leg for 24 hours without having to take medicine to expand bladder or having to do catheterization. soon I will record a video of how I do it and post it here on my channel 😉🤝
Great video! I'm similar level and use the coloplast speedicath catheters. They’re discreet and not too difficult to use. Do you have to wake up at night to cath too?
By a fixed catheter, I assume you are meaning an indwelling catheter? One downside is that your bladder will eventually shrink because it is not trained to hold urine since the urine is being held in the bag.
Hey Mason! I use the same catheter! I have stoma Through my bellybutton and I’ll always need to pee on my own. I am also a c5c6c7 quadriplegic. Thank you for sharing!!
Awesome! Is it easy to use the MTG EZ-Gripper with the stoma through your bellybutton? I've always wondered if females would be able to use this catheter. Thanks for watching!
@@masonx54 It's pretty easy. I've been doing it for around eight years. At first, I was using tenodesis splint but now I don't need it. it is really easy. You're Welcome!
I use a Coloplast intermittent catheter. I am paralyzed from the waist down, considered a partial paraplegic because I can move my legs etc some. I have feeling to know when I need to go to the restroom and I just use the intermittent catheter with KY Jelly or I also use a Coloplast Speedicath intermittent catheter which is pre-lubricated.

Indwelling catheters have a greater risk of causing urinary tract infections (UTIs) and other \health issues. A lot of quadriplegics, especially those without arm movement, use indwelling catheters. As for me, indwelling catheters are a last resort because I don''t want to have something inside me all of the time. However, there are condom catheters, which are external but can cause skin issues. Thank you for watching and commenting!
During the night, I use the same kind of catheter (MTG-EZ Gripper) but decrease the amount of time in between catheterizations to 3, 3.5, or 4 hours because I tend to get higher volumes at night. I think it's because my feet are "elevated." Therefore, fluids don't go to my feet. Thank you for watching and commenting!
Hi Miles. Surely it is not a subject that depends on you, but by any chance do you know if 180medical can market those probes in Spain? I am also C5-C6 and I have to catheterize. I currently live in Spain and a catheter like the MTG-EZ Gripper is not commercialized here. I am doing tests with the catheters that are sold here but I`m unable to. I have contacted 180medical via e-mail to find out if it would be possible for them to send me a free samples, but I have had no response. Thank you.

I've been self-cathing for about a year now. Before that, I had a Foley catheter in me for about a year and a half(Mostly because of my weight and not being able to reach myself to self catheter). However, after losing some weight I was able to at least reach well enough to start cathing on my own for about a year now(I've still got a ways to go to get down to an ideal weight and to reach without a struggle). Since I'm still pretty new at this, I have a few questions. How often do you have to catheter each day? My urologist wants me to cath about six times a day, but there are times when I get very little urine(it depends on how many liquids I drink between cathing) so most days I do it about five times. Do you ever poke yourself inside the urethra as your sliding the cath in and draw blood? I think sometimes the lube on my catheter is not slick enough and it rubs and bleeds sometimes. I guess what I want to know is if this common. How often do you get a UTI? It seems no matter how clean I get hands and my private parts, I end up getting one about every five or six months.... Thanks for any advice you can give....
Congratulations on losing the weight to allow you to self catheterize! I try to catheterize every five hours with one four hour in the night, so five catheterizations total. However, recently I have been needing to catheterize six times per day. Generally, you should catheterize every four to six hours. I have had some blood come out in the urine but it has only happened a few times in almost nine years. UTIs in our situation are very common. Since we catheterize, bacteria is always in our bladder. I recommend going to www.comfortteas.com and drinking that a couple of times a week. Thank you for watching and commenting!
