Wood stove install in our RV - North Woods Fabrication /// E62

  • Winter is coming and it's time to install our new wood stove in our RV. The mini wood stove we picked out from North Woods Fabrication, "The Explorer Wood Stove" is about the size of a mail box and will heat up our 240sf RV so it is super toasty. RVs are notorious for having moisture and mold problems because of the humidity that is caused in cold conditions. Installing a wood stove will provide dry heat to help prevent these types of issues. In this episode we go through the steps we took to convert our couch area to accommodate the wood stove while leaving room for heat clearance on all sides. We install the double insulated pipe through the pop out of our RV so when spring time comes we can convert everything back to the way it was.

Just wanted to say, we had the pleasure of enjoying the heat from that little stove. Not once, but twice last week. It is a pleasure to now see how it was all accomplished. Meg and Jon are the best and their girls are two little sweet hearts. HUGS to all and thank you for your hospitality. Auntie Beth & Uncle Dave

I went a different way on that. Don’t need wood heat much in the motorhome but it’s a nice backup so I made a metal panel that goes in the window when you open it and the stove pipe goes thru that. The floor and walls are moveable so I just set the floor down and put the reflective walls up about 4-5” from the actual walls and run the pipe out the window with the panel in there to keep the heat in. Zero cutting or mods to the motorhome and totally usable then transferable to another motorhome later in life by only changing the window panel if the other has a different size window opening.

Thimble improvise, I woulda done the same thing. Good job. My dear beloved and I, first home after marriage 42 years ago was a block home. So i understand the damp heat and moisture from gas or LP heat. We put in a wood stove and that solved our moisture problems. Great job John and Meg.

Enjoy the view of the fire through the glass. It is super easy to clean. Simply get a couple of damp/wet paper towels and a few dry ones. Dip one of the damp paper towels in the ashes and rub the glass with it. It will remove the soot and creasote on the glass easily and quickly. After the entire glass is wet and rubbed, use a dry paper towel to clean it off. If it isn''t completely clean, repeat with another wet paper towel dipped in ashes, rub to clean, dry with a clean paper towel. No need to buy some chemical cleaner. Ashes are the best cleaner.

@@WalnutsandWineberries You are welcome. I just looked on the internet and there are several videos of using this process. I learned it about 20 years ago from a friend. My wife and I think back to her parents who had a glass covering over their fireplace that got really coated every day. So, every morning they would remove the glass and take it to their sink and spend an hour or more scraping it off and cleaning it. They spent so much time cleaning their fireplace glass when it could have been done in minutes. Perhaps you need to add a little video doing this on your channel. I admire you two for your fortitude in doing everything yourselves. You are teaching your children well. Good luck in all that you do. Stay safe!!

The quick soot build up is a sign that you have serious incomplete combustion. You need better air flow, more fresh air, and not stuffing the burn box. Also, get a CO monitor/alarm if you don’t already have one. It’s a bad idea in general to use an outdoor camp stove in a tiny well sealed space. Your lives are worth infinitely more than the few bucks you’re trying to save.

Looking good. Just be cautious because any stoves in RVs and such should have a fresh air intake so you don’t deplete the air in the home and/or you are using up the hot air in the home which pulls in cold air from weak insulation points.
You could simply crack a window next to the stove or do the fresh air intake.

Apple slices and ground cinnamon powder in the water on top of the stove and it'll smell like fresh apple pie to begin with, after it's been on for a few hours it'll start smelling like fresh hot apple cider... Also orange peels on your water bucket gives off a nice citrus smell, but the best is a pot of beans cooked in a cast iron pot.... You'll find out it's not just great for heat....

    • @WalnutsandWineberries

It can certainly crank out the heat. Oftentimes, I will open 2 windows for fresh air if it's burning too hot. In your situation, I'd recommend getting some of those heat powered stove fans and directing the hot air in the general direction. I keep a small electrical fan near the stove and point it upward and it keeps the ceiling much cooler right above the stove. If I were to do it again, I'd get a cast iron stove for heat retention when the fire burns out. The metal on this one is too thin in my opinion. So much, that the top has concaved down a little bit from the weight of the double stove pipe. Hope this helps. Our camper is a longer one for its class. 32 feet with a double bump out in the back, and it heats it up back there.

After one burn I said, "no way," and we went to rural king to buy some double wall pipe. Just make sure your clearances are good and it will work great for you. Also, pick up a cheap fan as a blower. I aim mine toward the ceiling and it keeps it from getting too hot. Good luck!

Can't quit watching now. On splitting smaller firewood like that you might want to have a larger log with an old tire to put your firewood in and split them while in the tire. that way you don't have to keep bending over and picking it up. You have to be extremely careful installing a woodstove in your rv. Especially older rv's. You can do it You just need to consider the materials used in your rv. The glues and epoxy resins ect, many of wich emit toxic gasses when they reach higher temperatures. These materials and emitted gasses also have flash points. The temperature when reached that causes an instant inferno. Talk to any firefighter that's been on the job for more than a year or two and they'll tell you just don't do it. Get a blue flame propane heater or something. I don't agree with that , you can do it you just need to understand what you're doing and dealing with.
