  • Since this is the 2nd wood burning stove we've purchased, we really did our research before deciding on The Dwarf 4 Kilowatt stove. I repeat, we did MASSIVE amounts of research, which boiled down to finding a stove that is big enough to efficiently heat the bus, yet small enough to SAFELY meet the clearances specified by the manufacturer. This is the perfect stove for us and our bus!

    About Us:
Hi! We are Mike & Kerry, the proud owners of a 1992 Bluebird rear engine (pusher), 40' school bus! We named her Bussy McBusface in honor of the RRS Boaty McBoatface travesty!
We're building a Tiny-Home-in-a-Bus for full-time living in the most adventure-friendly way possible! In other words, Bussy will not be parked in our driveway, waiting for weekend or holiday getaways... when we finish the build, we'll be packing everything we're keeping into the bus and driving away from this old house forever!
We plan to be boondocking the majority of the time, so you'll see that reflected in our choices throughout the build (100 gallon water tank, composting toilet, solar power system, etc). We'd love to have you stick around and follow us on our journey, throughout the Skoolie Build, and to Infinite Adventures Beyond!
    Mike & Kerry

I agree, the dwarf stoves are much more appealing for a main heat source in skoolies, increasing the chances that there will be embers still burning in your stove in the morning. Looking good! The height of the chimney will affect the draft as well as safety. In residential housing the rule is 10' 2' 3'. 3' minimum height, 2' above anything within 10' of the chimney. The things around the chimney will also affect performance so just keep that in mind when you burn. There are spark arrester gadgets you can get to make sure no embers come out of the chimney and land on your deck. Always a Super Hot Kindling fire to start so that it helps to reduce the amount of creosote in the flue and chimney. That lil' round travelin' cap is a cap for the cleanout that you don't have. When you sweep your stove, (near the start and then again at the end of the season) you will probably just have to use the shopvac to remove the soot and ash that falls into the firebox. Easy but dirty job. I like fruit tree timber personally. Seasoned and dry will burn longer, hotter and that is key to stoking the firebox for a low over night burn. There is no nicer heat than radiant heating. Some people use fans to circulate the air and limit cold spots. Get yourself a chimney brush and a couple of rods and you should be good to go. They get dirty and I used to stuff mine in a ski bag that I could close up and stuff in the storage locker nice and easy.
I imagine you're going to get grief from any RV park even for just being a Skoolie. But then guys, what the heck are you doing at an RV park? The wild and free is where you want to be.
    Getting so close now!

Thank you for the video, I am afraid that I bought too much and too little, I got a woodstove, single wall, double wall, triple wall pipe sections, damper, flash, sealer. I am sending back the flash pipe and going for a flash plate section like yours, and also the handsome clamps. Shopping for a bus, and I want the stove put in before the insulation. Love your cement board on the bricks, copper is very expensive so I may have to copy you, LoL. Have a great weekend!

Looks great, but you really need to go back and cut that roof penetration and deck penetration larger. You should have a 2" space between double wall stove pipe and any combustibles, including roof insulation and the decking on top. Even Tinywoodstoves puts that in their Bus install instructions.

@@BussyMcBusface We went with the Dwarf 5k, and we ended up cutting an 11" hole in our Skoolie to accommodate the 5" double wall pipe that we ordered with it. It looked freaking huge, but it has worked out for the last year. Also looking back over my first comment it looks way less friendly than I intended, I really do love what you two are doing with your bus =)

    Hi Mike,
Since I’ve seen posts saying they lost insurance due to the roof raise and or a wood stove.
I have Safeco and they didn’t have any problems giving me insurance on my bus for private use only.
So I checked with my agent and told him that I want to raise the roof about 16 inches.
Also we would like a wood stove.
    Today I received this email
Sorry for the delay on the email, we are just having the hardest time finding coverage on the school bus. While discussing the modifications planned, every underwriter we have spoken with has said it would not be something they would consider covering, and that a school bus, even used for personal use, should not be on a standard personal auto policy.
So needless to say, we have been scrambling trying to find a suitable market for the risk. My fear is that a claim situation arises and Safeco, or Progressive or Travelers, or really any of our other standard carriers would deny coverage. We have access to specialty vehicle markets, and we are doing our diligence in order to offer you the best options we can find.
So my question is has anyone been able to get insurance coverage WITH their insurance company knowing these factors?
And if you did, who is it with?
Thank you all for your help

Word of warning for future fuels, if you get osage orange wood to burn in the stove, it'll pop and crackle more than Mike when he first gets up (#VeteranNoises), but if you use too much, it can burn hot enough to make the cast iron of the stove turn cherry red. Learned that the hard way one year with a wood stove I had to heat a house I lived in. Don't forget to leave a pot or kettle of water on top to help with the humidity in the bus, otherwise everything will get super dry inside. Plus side to that being you'll always have hot water handy for a cup of tea.

With that through-grate bottom air flow and shaker-grate it looks like you have a nice little coal stove. In fact unless you close off the floor/grate, that's exactly what you have. Wood likes to sit on a closed bed of ashes - with that grate open you'll go through wood way too fast. But coal is better anyway - much longer, constant, predictable burns and it's cheaper than wood if you have to buy wood.

One thing is that the shields you installed on the outside of the stove opening need to be 1” above the floor or base to allow air to circulate up behind the wall panels. Because you only have them open on the top it will not allow enough air to flow to keep the walls cool.

Ya that’s way I did to keep Fire Marshal happy
I used 1/2” copper pipe for my spacers
      Cut into 1 inch lengths
I was able to use 1/8 inch metal sheeting from my work that was rejected for the heavy stamping 4’x4’
Inch off floor & inch copper as my spacers behind the metal sheet
      Passed easy :)
But medically retiring from that job of 22 years bumped me to natural gas fireplace & natural gas stove for each level
It’s close but still miss the essence of wood heat
      &
Log cedar for Xmas (smell just relaxes & nice crackle :)
3 full bush cord in Ontario Canada if u never want furnace on & like shorts 12 months year when inside anywhere in house Lol
But not following those little code specs will come back to haunt u later
& comment above is right on
24” above height of anything within 10 feet of chimney
Never have back draft or poor draft when stick to code for a house
Miss my 30+ year Vermont casting
What I put against any modern stove

& you’ll have future peace of mind
You won’t have an any safety issue in future because u took time to do it right !

Outstanding presentation and info..1 question,Why didn't you install bricks on side and back panels to retain heat?

I've got the 5kw with the cookstove and have been very happy with it. A few hiccups with some of the parts, but their service was fantastic and got me squared away. It looks like you got the rusty feet too. How long of a burn can you get overnight? I'm hard pressed to go much beyond 3-4 hours with it packed to the gills. I may try some of those compressed logs they demo to see if they last longer, trying to source them locally. Nice bus!

Hey guys didn't read any other messages, but I was wondering if you might need the travel cap when ever you travel to keep the down draft from blowing ash into cab ??
Just a thought...I LOVE THE SET UP, LOOKS AWESOME...

If you mount the front of the stove towards the front or rear of the bus, you can use the rear vent and save the precious space on top surface? Or even at 45 degree angle to fit in the fire stove nook?

Mike sounds like Tim Allen the tool man with the grunts and groans.

Nice job guys! We just got our tiny wood stove in the mail and are wondering about the tiling job you did. What pointers could you give us on what adhesive and grout you used. Does it matter concerning the exposure to heat?

May I ask what stove pipe you are using and where you got it from? That install is great and looks amazing!
