    I've noticed over the decades that Martin's vocal range is incredible. He can go as low as Dave, but he can also reach the sky!

      In this song, Martin took center stage, sure. Dave is still the singer, but Martin is singing the higher part throughout the song. It's a Martin song all the way through, but Dave is backstage singing the lead. It's very obvious and clear near the end when most of the music drops out except for the beat.

    There are times when Martin will do a "Dave" song for his turn. Then you get a real treat.

    I think he was visible drunk there. Respect for singing and playing on point while being drunk.. amazing.. same goes for Dave. Crazy tour.

      Yeah in the beginning he seemed to be stumbling and having a hard time standing in one place

    Martin has a voice from another dimension and the fact that he only sings a few songs per album and in concert leaves us wanting more, BUT Martin doesn't have even HALF of the showmanship Dave has as a front man for the band. Dave brings raw energy and raw emotion and infuses the audience with it! Martin doesn't have that ability even though the audience adores him. DM would not have made it as far as they did with Martin fronting the group. Dave is one of the top 20 front men OF ALL TIME!

    My Depeche Mode brother from another mother, I’m glad you got Martin on center stage…but wait. I believe he makes another appearance in this tour. Yes I and most vocal coaches would agree Martin has the better esthetical voice and I’d love to see more of him as well but I don’t think he feels comfortable having more time at center stage. Here we get to enjoy his voice at a lower range, which he sings gorgeously. It shows the beauty of his voice at another end of the spectrum.

    Well Judas was chosen cause they were touring for Songs of Faith and Devotion and wanted to feature the new song.

    Even though I love the song Judas, I wish for the concert video we got One Caress or Somebody. On the second leg of this tour, Martin does perform the best version of I Want You Now-I was there!

      @Ananta79 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Indeed ! I Want You Now from the Exotic Tour was mind blowing! I already suggested this version of this song to Seph. Really hope he will react to it as well as One Caress and A Question Of Lust ❤☺️

      Never better than this... acoustic was good (i got it in Mexico City in 2006) but at the time Martin was doing some true gems (i got Leave in Silence at that very same show) so Judas for me was a kind of let down (Blue Dress was played the night before)... now that im reading what im thinking, im sounding kind of silly...Great I Got Judas!...

    Martin did a solotour for his 2. soloalbum. I saw him twice in cologne and hamburg. Small venues and he was soooo good. Iisten to Loverman... ❤❤❤😊

    Martin Birthday today. The man wrote the soundtrack of our lives. Right now at this moment at the concert in Zagreb, Croatia, Dave brings him a cake, hands out black balloons and the whole arena sings Happy Birthday to Martin. Awesome ❤🎉

    Yes Martin's live performances get better with time.... He also sang "death's door" during this tour, it only ends up on the credits for devotional 😔. Hope you decide to react to it as well (the full performance can be found on TH-cam). It's gorgeous and I know you didn't like the studio version... I wonder if the live version will change your mind

  • @mikeleslie4364

    The magic is.. they have 2 lead singers. Martin could lead and sing all the songs too. You need to react to some of their solo stuff they have done between DM albums. They are very good.. but put those men together and you have magic!

    • @mariabaverstock1765
      @mariabaverstock1765 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      So true! When you look back at their early beginnings, who would have realized what they had in Dave and Martin's voices? Songs like waiting for the night, here is the house, behind the wheel... Whenever they harmonize, it's unreal.

      Ultra is AWESOME ! They didn't miss a beat, and what a dramatic backstory with Allen leaving and Dave almost dying and being in a week condition when the album was made. Again, showing the brilliance of Martin's song writing and the resilliance of DM.

      @Cloudberry84 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@chrisherrmann3991 Indeed. Knowing the struggles the band went through, Alan leaving and the album almost wasn't released and they still managed to produce a high quality album is beyond impressive 🙂

    Once at a concert, probably playing the angel tour, I was sitting near a family who clearly were there for their kids just not aged enough to go on their own. And their father was so sceptical all the way through, until the Martin's bit, and then he said why is it this guy only sings a couple of songs, he's the one who can really sing.) Yes, his vocal ability is on another level compared to Dave's. But you just can't think of Depeche mode without Dave. It just wouldn't have happened at all.)

  • @da66en
    @da66en ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Martin is a better singer, but Dave is a better performer by a huge factor.

  • @armanddrakeiceman

    • @armanddrakeiceman
      @armanddrakeiceman ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Oh, and you have to review the tracks that didn't make the film... the most of them are on youtube on a decent quality... (the worst quality being a Martin track filmed (and played) only in Johannesburgh im 1994)... but even with that low quality its a must because it is a non Martin solo song.

  • @fpmip
    @fpmip ปีที่แล้ว +5

    I agree with you on the voices between Dave and Martin. I prefer Martin myself, more soul-like. And his vocal range is much better imo. Judas is a good example.

    This was great. But I have to say, the only thing I didn't like about the Devotional Tour video is that they only included this one song from Martin. When I saw them live at MSG in 93 he actually sang a few songs and the best one in my opinion was when he sang One Caress with a string quartet. It was a phenomenal performance and should have been included in the tour video.

    So what I have come to realize is that Martin wrote these songs for Dave’s voice but the songs he wrote for himself are uniquely for his own voice and another thing is Martin sings with a certain passion because these words came from his heart and soul and that’s why when Martin sings it’s a real treat!!!!

    I dare to recall that one of the backing singers is a certain Hilda who married to Alan. Another thing... For me there was a flash when on a tour (don´t want a spoil it...almost), when Dave was a background singer of MACRO - LIVE performet by Mart. I mean : Dave is the better performer and Mart is the better singer. Both complemented each other splendidly 1993/94. Thereafter...

  • @FredrikAndersson597

    Dave's voice and tone suit Depeche Mode's music very well. But some songs do better with Martin's softer tone and not least his precise and sharp pitch.
    When Martin sometimes sings songs that Dave originally sings, Martin's tone and pitch give the song certain notes that Dave's pitch can't give, which can lift the song.
    In my opinion, Martin would, for example, have sung Little15 - can be heard in the demo version - and Condemnation, which got a different character, less screaming, when he sang it during the exotic tour in 1994, instead of Dave.

    It's interesting that another commenter says that it looks like Martin is visibly drunk here. I too thought something looked a bit off with him. His eyes are movements around the stage are heavy. At a minimum he doesn't look clear-headed.
    Another thing that I find strange is that Alan is playing a mobile keyboard on the stage floor. They did this gimmick on a few songs on this tour. It's always left me scratching my head.

    i think Martin has a better vocal Range than Dave but over all Dave is a better front man. I have heard martin sings some of the songs Dave usually does and it doesnt have the same impact ,that being said i am sure the same could be said if Dave tried some of the ones martin has done. Also they were recording these concerts for release, so of course they would compile their best takes of the songs for it :)
