Just a few minutes ago, I got the order from my gastroenterologist to start this. I'm so thankful for this video. I need things explicitly spelled out, which is what you've done so very well.
Really glad to hear that Kelly. Hope it is going well for you, and do aim to speak with a dietitian if possible to help you through this journey without risking any deficiencies.
This video is so good. Learned so much relevant information which has helped me. I’ve been stuffing my face with so much fruit and vegetables thinking I’m being healthy! Just 2 days of stopping huge portions of plums, apples, broccoli etc I’ve lost almost 2 kg. Feeling better already and I’m sure I can sort out my diet soon. Thank you so much. Keep them coming.
This is such a helpful video. I'm honestly so tired of reading "informative blogs" that don't give good information. This is so much better. I appreciate the information!
This is very informative! The low FODMAP diet can be a tricky one to figure out, and I really like how you laid out the foods to avoid in a simple way. The blog article is also a great resource for people looking for a comprehensive list of what they can and can't eat when following low FODMAP.

I actually have my first appointment with a gastroenterologist tommorrow... I was diagnosed with IBS last year, by my primary care doctor, who has otherwise basically ignored me. I have been doing my own research and really think I have SIBO and malabsorption. I am very health conscious and watch my nutrition, but just started the FODMAP diet about 10 days ago. I have heard that things can initially get worse, because of the detox. My symptoms haven't really changed except for a lessening of a strong sulfur odor.
This is THE BEST video on the low FODMAP diet that I have found since I first started having IBS symptoms. Thank you so much for putting this together! I wish that everyone who needs this would watch this.
Great video! I love how you were straight to the point and very concise. Based on your experience, is it normal to see no improvements, say, 3-5 days into a strictly low FODMAP diet, but later seeing improvements towards the end of the elimination phase? I have a funny story. 2 months ago I switched to what I suspected to be a very healthy diet (kind of like Paleo), with tons of fats, little carbs, cruciferous veggies, lots of fiber, and lots of fermentable foods for building my gut microbiome. I have also always been super gluttonous so I was chowing down almost 4x your normal portion of brussels sprouts, and like 3 fermented soybean servings in a single day. I even did a 4 day fast while stomach pains had begun to onset to purge any folded proteins in my body. Well, the result of this has been excruciating pain throughout the day. Only after doing my own research and learning about the low-FODMAP diet a week ago did I realize everything I was eating was SUPER high FODMAP. Ironically, my path to a healthier diet led to one of the longest and worst ailments i've ever had. Anyway, the morale of the story is to learn about the low-FODMAP diet to help gauge your dietary decisions, and always listen to your own body above any other health advice. I hope people find that story intriguing. Would love to hear your thoughts on my aforementioned question.
Maybe you’ve already found the answer, but for anyone wondering, it is normal to see the results at the end of the elimination phase. My doctor explained that the improvement of one month (if done correctly) could be of 50%, it is a slow and constant process but totally worth it! Good luck to anyone who needs this 🎉

You're very welcome! The amount of grams of each food group is different. In my blog post that goes with the video, I give more exact amounts. I personally prefer to use "cups" or "handfuls" etc as this is often more practical than grams. But yes, each food is different.
I read your blog post of FODMAP foods. Your list contradicts some of the items on my doctor's list. I'll go with my doctor's list, but now I'm confused. For example, oat milk and soy milk are on the "good" list. I bought a carton of oat milk because I couldn't have cow's milk.
Been doing this fodmap diet for 6 weeks now and I still don't find a change in bowls... not to sure how many more weeks I should try... getting supper frustrated
A lot of these "avoided" foods are in line with Diverticulosis. I have that and can't eat quite a few things. Especially seeds and nuts. Etc. This is going to be difficult. Lol
Can you take psylium husks or celery on this diet? I have always had problems with constipation (in addition to my other problems) and find these two things help. Thanks.
Good evening. It is likely best to speak to a dietitian about your symptoms. This can give you a more tailored understanding of which foods are more or less suitable for you.
i'm trying to figure out and maybe someone can shortcut my research is why grapefruit are often listed as "high" and oranges are listed as "low" even though their fructose to glucose ratios are very close to each other, around 1.0 which is supposed to be ideal. with that in mind, what makes grapefruit a high and oranges a low????
Thank you for your your comment! Both orange and grapefruit would typically be considered low FODMAP, but as a grapefruit is often much larger than an orange, we would recommend 1/2 a grapefruit as a portion compared to a full orange. Over the day, the full fruit intake would also need to be considered, with no more than 2 portions a day recommended to avoid higher fructose intakes from larger quantities of moderate fructose-containing fruits. I hope this helps to answer your question!
@@DB-xp9px almost all foods could be high FODMAP at larger amounts than on these lists. The best guide for portion sizes of foods that are low, medium or high FODMAP would be the on the Monash low FODMAP app. Definitely worth downloading if you are interested in more thorough information on the low FODMAP diet!
Very useful video... i probably have IBS even though i still need to get the hospital checkup to make sure. But i figured it can't hurt to already start the diet because the waiting list is taking a while and i have all the symptoms anyway. So thank you for this clear information :) ... also "de Zwarte" sounds very Dutch and not Irish.
Glad you found the video helpful. We do usually recommend that you speak to a doctor and/or dietitian when following this diet. Unfortunately while a diet may sound like it is harmless, we know that following the low FODMAP diet without careful management and review can indeed lead to nutritional deficiencies. Also, psychologically, following such a restrictive diet is incredibly taxing, with many people feeling isolated by not being able to eat out as easily, and some. Even developing food fears or further restrictive eating habits. We find that up to 80% of people with IBS can actually improve their symptoms sufficiently by following the first line advice, which I covered in my previous video. These are much less risky diet changes to try. Wow, long comment 😅. Hope this helps. I'm definitely not trying to be fear mongering. Just hoping to be realistic and informative 👍 And indeed, I'm Dutch! Well spotted! But I'm as Irish as they get after living in the Irish countryside for over 20 years 😄
@@didititian Hello Didi thank you for the reply :) I am Dutch myself so the name sounded very familiar... but as i could not trace any accent on you i figured either your relatives had moved there or you went there at an early age. I watched the 2 previous videos today but i have to admit i already pretty much did all of the first line things... My problems have been ongoing for nearly 5 months now... but i only got send to a intestinal/stomach specialist 3 weeks ago and the waiting list is until the 25h of May. Considering i have my own small business where i can not afford being sick this has been a very big annoyance in my life. In the past i have been a chef so even within the Fodmap recommendations i seem to be able to make varied and interesting meals. The only recommendation in the first line though that i am doing the opposite is instead of eating more regularly is fasting for long periods and only eating twice a day... this has actually helped me quite a bit. Anyway sorry for the long reply back and thank you again for your videos.... you deserve a lot more subs/views!

I must have not paid attention what did she say about rice and rice noodles. And what is a rice cake 🎂 ? Doesn't that have sugar, how much sugar are we allowed?
Hi Alexander, rice and rice noodles are thankfully low FODMAP! And rice cakes are something we regularly eat her ein Ireland. They are like biscuits made from puffed rice. There is no set amount of sugar that can be consumed on the low fodmap diet, but ofcourse for other health reasons, you may be advised to limit usual sugar consumption. We do however recommend to avoid added fructose-based sugar on the low FODMAP diet. Hope this helps!
Hi Brenda, the low FODMAP diet is not shown to benefit those with oesophageal reflux, unless it is caused by IBS. Perhaps a dietitian can work with you to prepare a plan to manage your relfux?
Would it not make more sense to improve the health of the digestive system instead of starving people. Sounds like a band-aid treatment which is what science based approaches are all about?
It is definitely one of the trickier diets out there. And before starting this diet, I indeed highly recommend trying various other, less invasive, strategies to improve gut health first. But for a small and carefully selected group of people, this diet can be life-changing and give back control over their gut symptoms.
Why everyone has a different Fodmap food which is good or bad. This is my 15th video and a one isn't a same?!? Please. Some people say this food is ok others no?! I am lost! I have an app for 7 day and for them was Pepsi ok but Coce no. Then one dark chocolate another no. Then som cheese ok some no. Like mozzarella and cheddar ok but Clouda no. Hard cheese ok light no! Since when is mozzarella hard cheese??? The grapes are ok but dry grapes no????
I know Jackie! It can be so disheartening to get a long list of what you can't eat! My article to go with this video has several long lists of foods that are suitable to eat. Here is a link: www.didititian.com/what-foods-do-i-need-to-avoid-on-the-low-fodmap-diet-for-ibs/ Hope this helps!
I agree I too was shocked, it has serious health consequences, I have yet to hear from a dietician that recommends a fully healthy diet. The video was great other than this disappointing recommendation
@@michellekeir592 the video is about low fodmap foods. The low fodmap diet isn't exactly healthy and aspartame is low fodmap so 🤷🤷 makes sense but doesn't mean you need to use it
Hi Jack, yes as Alicia mentions, in this video I discuss what foods are low FODMAP. This diet is most definitely not the same as a "healthy eating" diet. It is far from healthy in the sense that it may pose a risk of nutritional deficiencies and lead to a reduction in our microbiotic diversity. It is a therapeutic diet only to be used for those with diagnosed IBS. And even in those circumstances, it should not be used for longer than 8 weeks or so.
My twin toddlers follow low fodmap. But we struggle with what is ok for them some times. Banana's cause discomfort. Can I have your email or phone number for communication.
It certainly is challenging, and I do not recommend starting this diet without careful 1:1 guidance form a dietitian to both support you to cope during it, and ensure you balance your nutrition with the tolerated foods. This diet is also only meant to be tried for a set period of time, after which you will have to reintroduce tolerated foods. Hope this helps!
That sounds very uncomfortable. Very sorry to hear you are living with this issue. I would definitely recommend that you speak to a doctor about your issue if you haven't already. Usually for an IBS diagnosis, there does need to be a link to bowel habits. The usual IBS diagnostic criteria (after exclusion of other potential gut concerns) are: At least three months, with onset at least six months previously, of recurrent abdominal pain or discomfort* associated with two or more of the following: - Improvement with defecation; and/or - Onset associated with a change in frequency of stool; and/or - Onset associated with a change in form (appearance) of stool. *Discomfort means an uncomfortable sensation not described as pain.

So glad that this video has been helpful! Your past few years of trips to A&E with gut symptoms sound very familiar to my own story too! Thankfully you have a diagnosis now and can start working your way through the many options we have with lifestyle and diet for ibs. I actually host my own virtual dietitian clinic, if you are still looking to speak to a dietitian (and I'm based in Ireland myself)! You can read more about my clinic on www.didititian.com. Feel free to message me if you'd like to discuss more about how we may be able to work together 😊
@@didititian thank you for this reply..l would be very grateful for any help with this..the most noteworthy thing for me is that while l have all the IBS symptoms, l can have chronic episode over several weeks (sometimes needing to go to A&E) and then for no reason, it clears. Had to go to bed several times in last few days with severe symptoms.. As l am poor at keeping records l find most of the solution process with thd FODMAP very complex and confusing..I am ready to receive any direction or support you can give..l dare not imagine l could be free of this debilitating condition which has impacted on my life very dramatically ..many thanks again

Is this diet good for SIBO.
thanks for this informative video, my question about this diet is how much grams can your put on your plate on the elimination phase?
You're very welcome! The amount of grams of each food group is different. In my blog post that goes with the video, I give more exact amounts. I personally prefer to use "cups" or "handfuls" etc as this is often more practical than grams. But yes, each food is different.
I'm a beginning of the Fodmap diet, i am suffer from constipation any way but it's worse nòw. ..has anyone have this problem? Thanks
Are bananas, avocados, cabbage, sweet pickled beets, sauerkraut, raisins, olive oil, pumpkin seeds, apricot kernels, broccoli, and turmeric fine to consume?
Is there any guidance of how this diet could be structured with additional supplements and exercise at the gym? Really interested in this.
I need a printout of all this info 🥲
Look for the FODMAP diet app.
Yes the FODMAP apps are very helpful. And my blog post that goes with the video can also be printed!
I read your blog post of FODMAP foods. Your list contradicts some of the items on my doctor's list. I'll go with my doctor's list, but now I'm confused.
For example, oat milk and soy milk are on the "good" list. I bought a carton of oat milk because I couldn't have cow's milk.
Hi can you please suggest a diet for me as I am an Ulcertive colitis patient
Gosh! The meaning of Fodmap sounds like Greek to me. Thanks for explaining everything...
It really does sound very tricky, doesnt it. Glad to have been able to help 😊
Been doing this fodmap diet for 6 weeks now and I still don't find a change in bowls... not to sure how many more weeks I should try... getting supper frustrated
Do you have videos on chronic constipation? I’ve not been diagnosed with IBS or told to follow this diet so maybe it’s not for me. Thanks m
We’re you saying to stay away from goats milk, soy milk, etc. I replayed it several times at that place
How should I do the reintroduction phase?
Isn't Aspartame extremely bad for the gut microbiome?
No it’s fine, just avoid other sugar alcohols. Probably not a good idea to down a 2L of Coke Zero though either
Thank you so much.
Awh, thank you as well! Really glad you enjoyed my videos.
I noticed that rum is on your list of foods to avoid. Are other liquors better than rum for FODMAP?
A lot of these "avoided" foods are in line with Diverticulosis. I have that and can't eat quite a few things. Especially seeds and nuts. Etc. This is going to be difficult. Lol
Hi I have a high digestive enzyme. What do you mean by that and how can I lower my digestive enzyme? Thank you.
How do you consider having a critically low pancreatic 😮insufficiency , on Creon, and sodium that keeps dropping.
Can you take psylium husks or celery on this diet? I have always had problems with constipation (in addition to my other problems) and find these two things help. Thanks.
Can IBS or sibo causes brain fog if yes it vanishes with time?
I don't understand meaning of oolong tea being not allowed and black or green tea being allowed? Among other things....
Hello please can you tell me what food to eat for ibs diarrhoea and cholesterol. Which fruit, diary and lentils can I have. Thanks
Good evening. It is likely best to speak to a dietitian about your symptoms. This can give you a more tailored understanding of which foods are more or less suitable for you.
Do I need to eliminate bitter gourd lady finger and and beetroot in my diet
i'm trying to figure out and maybe someone can shortcut my research is why grapefruit are often listed as "high" and oranges are listed as "low" even though their fructose to glucose ratios are very close to each other, around 1.0 which is supposed to be ideal. with that in mind, what makes grapefruit a high and oranges a low????
Thank you for your your comment! Both orange and grapefruit would typically be considered low FODMAP, but as a grapefruit is often much larger than an orange, we would recommend 1/2 a grapefruit as a portion compared to a full orange. Over the day, the full fruit intake would also need to be considered, with no more than 2 portions a day recommended to avoid higher fructose intakes from larger quantities of moderate fructose-containing fruits. I hope this helps to answer your question!
@@didititian So if oranges were slightly bigger then they would also be considered high fodmap?
Just hoping to be realistic and informative 👍
And indeed, I'm Dutch! Well spotted! But I'm as Irish as they get after living in the Irish countryside for over 20 years 😄
@@didititian Hello Didi thank you for the reply :)
I am Dutch myself so the name sounded very familiar... but as i could not trace any accent on you i figured either your relatives had moved there or you went there at an early age.
@@Daruffy Thank you! I am so glad to be able to help people here! And all subs, likes, comments and views count! So thank YOU for your assistance!
I hope you get sorted soon with your health concerns, and best of luck with your business :)
Thank you for posting!!! I got my diagnosis SEP 29th 2022. EArly stages of this new journey. 🔺🔺🔺 QUESTION : Did anyone you know have red blotches on their lower legs and imbalance (slight vertigo) and constipation ???🔻🔻🔻
Thank you Didi
Glad to be of help!
thanks!
Welcome! :)
Excelente! 👍
Thank you Lucia! Glad you enjoyed the video!
What was the name of the app again, that helped with the portions.
Hi Maria, the app I refer to in the video is the Monash University FODMAP diet app. Hope this helps 👍
Can we eat jaggery in a low FODMAP Diet?
Some food may give 1 person problems, and not another the same way
So true! Everyone's symptoms are unique to them, their lifestyle and their preferences/tolerances.
Would this diet help diverticulitis?
How do adapt this to esphogal acid reflux?
I feel like it’s a starvation diet,😢.
You can eat unlimited amounts of meat and eggs, how can that along with the many other foods you can have some of be a starvation diet, lol
What can I eat? Maybe that would be easier for me.
@@didititian thx so much!💗
You recommend Aspartame! I'm very shocked by that..can you explain please as I know there is research about that and how bad it it is.
Can’t eat anything
My twin toddlers follow low fodmap. But we struggle with what is ok for them some times. Banana's cause discomfort. Can I have your email or phone number for communication.
Perfect elimination diet is the carnivore diet - pure meat, no sauces, garlic, onions, tomatoes, etc.
Are soy products allowed?
hard to understand the dialect TEXTLISTS?
Mom'm M
This diet ibs is manageble...?
It certainly is challenging, and I do not recommend starting this diet without careful 1:1 guidance form a dietitian to both support you to cope during it, and ensure you balance your nutrition with the tolerated foods. This diet is also only meant to be tried for a set period of time, after which you will have to reintroduce tolerated foods. Hope this helps!
What if diarrhea or constipation is not an issue, but rather a 3 month stomach distention almost everyday?
That sounds very uncomfortable. Very sorry to hear you are living with this issue. I would definitely recommend that you speak to a doctor about your issue if you haven't already. Usually for an IBS diagnosis, there does need to be a link to bowel habits. The usual IBS diagnostic criteria (after exclusion of other potential gut concerns) are:
At least three months, with onset at least six months previously, of recurrent abdominal pain or discomfort* associated with two or more of the following:
- Improvement with defecation; and/or
- Onset associated with a change in frequency of stool; and/or
- Onset associated with a change in form (appearance) of stool.
*Discomfort means an uncomfortable sensation not described as pain.
Peanut butter triggers my ibs .
Does honey cause ibs
Honey does not cause IBS, but for some people it can make them more bloated as it contains the FODMAP called Fructose.
Are you Dutch form origin.nyou have a Dutch name hehe
Way too fast for me to take in the information!
I know my Irish accent gets ahead of me sometimes 😅 feel free to reduce the playback speed of needed!
