I really liked Maracaibo, though I got pretty sick of it in pandemic days. It *is* very mechanism-heavy, but we thought they fit together better than, say, Endless Winter's. Agreed on the production, though. The expansion does include dual-layer player boards, which help a lot. For the base game, I had more luck once I started putting the discs side-by-side like little TruckNutz. Oddly, I didn't like it as much at 3P, because 3P games tend to have each player picking one influence track to focus on and barely using the others.

Bought Maracaibo for solo play. Major disappointment. In my sell pile.
