I have a very similar story to Eddie, never did my GCSE’s and dropped out of school when I was 14. I was totally lost and felt like nothing was worth while. I eventually got a job in McDonald’s and I’ve slowly ended up progressing to better jobs but still suffered with lots of mental health issues and ended up fat. At the start of this year I realised if I don’t do something then I’m going to have a long miserable life. Since then I’ve lost 17 lb in the last 8 months, I paid off all my debts, moved out my parents house and went back to uni to finish a degree that I deferred for 2 years, I’m about to graduate and I landed a new job in cybersecurity with a big company. I’ve never felt like I have more purpose in life and I put at least 80% of that down to lifting weights. Running has helped a bit too but mostly weights. I was always worried about going into a gym before but I realised that nothing was worse than the thought of being alone and sad for the rest of my life. If you’re down in any way, go and lift weights, you won’t change over night, set yourself the goal of being as fit as you can be and try new things in the gym and get into other sports if you can. That way you’ll never run out of having a new challenge. I can’t promise you it will do as much as it did for me but I can say with 100% certainty, you’ll feel a lot better about yourself. Delayed gratification stays with you permanently and makes you feel like you’re worth something because you’ve just spent the last 8 months or so looking after yourself. Stop the constant instant gratification and save them for the moments you can really enjoy.

It's not like it's either spank the kids or do nothing at all... there's plenty of parenting methods that clearly work for discipline and boundaries, etc. that don't involve doing that.
Before light smacking, it was more, whipping with a stick or using a belt, or burning the child with a hot spoon, etc. At least we have largely moved beyond that while still being able to discipline children just fine. Smacking is the same (just less severe). It's better for the parent(s) too, they generally don't want to hit their kid, even if it's more psychological than anything (some do! they take their frustrations out on their kids). If they had the knowhow to use a different method, it's a win for everyone.
Also not talking about stealing the kids stuff, or being a hawk in their life, or going through their personal shit. That will destroy any trust. Too many parents see children as their "property", like an object or a pet.
A lot of parents don't take any real time to figure out WHY a kid is doing what they are doing. it's just about obedience in the moment to the exclusion of understanding. Through understanding, a much easier and better outcome can be had (which includes them better understanding you, rather than just obeying like a dog).
Also a lot of times a stressful situation will sort of organically occur through natural emotions (often the parent's uncontrolled emotions just as much as the kid), and then the kid will be put in a position where in order to end it and comply, they have to just submit completely and then they feel embarrassed and it grows their disdain for the parent who put them in that position, when there's often a much better way to handle it, but the parent cared more about their own ego and obedience in that moment. It makes the kid feel like a dog, and never able to be on equal footing as far as being able to express their OWN problems with the situation. Maybe the parent was out of line, at least to some degree... but a whole lot of parents will NEVER acknowledge that. They can do no wrong, even if they are wrong. The kid has to be the "bigger man" (even if it's through force). It's not a good dynamic to have, and it teaches kids some weird lessons about how to navigate life. Closely related is how a lot of parents even refuse to say "I don't know".
There's a lot of conventional parenting out there that really makes the kids feel distanced from the parents, which is sad. Sucks for everyone.
But anyway! this episode is great. Really enjoyed it.
Eddie opening up about his past and being open and vulnerable is genuinely the most alpha thing I have seen him do. Not the confused idea of an "alpha" people have that doesn't even exist in wolves and apes, but rather, the qualities you ACTUALLY see in wolves (fathers with their family) and apes (leaders of a group). They're very caring and can console the most vulnerable in the group and have a very soft side, and can express their emotions, because that is a very strong set of qualities when it comes to effective real leadership.
2:10:47 - I love that Eddie said that. No such thing as self made. What about all the employees, all the business partners, the education facilities, the people who helped direct one in life, the sacrifices one's family made, etc. etc. etc.
Then there's alllll the "luck"/fortune involved for things to pan out in just the way that they did. Billions of things could have happened slightly differently from birth until adult that could have altered the whole outcome for the better or worse.

Thank you for sharing Eddie as someone with dyslexia, dyspraxia and ADHD (as I recently found out), your story has resonated with me and inspired me to keep pushing my capabilities no matter the struggles. Thanks for hosting the Beast Brian, you need a show on a global radio station! I was captivated the whole time, and I can’t concentrate for more than 30 minutes usually 😂🙏🏼

This is the first Shawstrength Podcast that I've listened to and man, it was amazing! I would not have thought Brian Shaw would be such a damn good interviewer, but he really asked some fantastic, thoughtful questions and moved the conversation along wonderfully. Eddie Hall was great as well, being so candid and open and willing to share the highs and lows throughout his life. This is some seriously inspiring stuff. I'll be forwarding the podcast to some friends and checking out more episodes!

Hearing Eddie talk about his childhood really hits hard. I had the same struggles like exactly the same, and for me as well i'm thankfull that my mom especially was so open minded my dad as well and they saw beyond what was said and they introduced me this wonderfull world or sports and fitness. Started swimming at 10 and changed everything..did swimming and cycling till i was 19 amd then started the gym...fast Forward to the present..27 years old, training and Fitness is my whole life... working as a PE teacher and PT i'm doing my best to promote and teach kids and adults alike the wonders of training and doing sports because it really gave me a purpose and it changed my life for the absolute better. Eddie is trully a inspiration. I respect the man so much.

Thanks for putting this up Brian! It's nice to know there're others out there that have a similar experience growing up and then makes something progressive out of that trauma. Rising above it all despite most of the world being against you.
Eddy, you are one of the most inspiring people out there for me including the infamous 4, (Brian, Robert, Eddy, and Nick) it takes REAL strength to survive, overcome, and progress with your childhood. I will continue to be inspired by you all!
    Thank you, Jody

Thanks for the honest truth and honest emotion Eddie. You do give people strength 💪. Sometimes we sit here watching TH-cam, btw 80% of YT are male watchers, we need to know that we are not alone. We have a lot on our shoulders, especially those of us that grew up without fathers or without any male role models.

Eddie - It takes up lot of courage to open up on your kid suffering from ADHD and I am happy for you to identify and disperse the energy. It took us a while to determine the cause and have found out that exercising or swimming for my kid actually made him worse. Each kid has their own way to deal with and we found my kiddo can be in front of a piano learning for hours and be calm and enjoying at the time.
    Thanks!!

Can we be honest for a minute- these are arguably two of the strongest (registered) men in human existence. If men do not listen to this wisdom and lived experience...which most of us frankly aspire to.. we might need help.
Two legends. Being vulnerable, colloquial, direct. More people should hear this message- men or otherwise. Send this to your network!!

Excellent podcast. Arrived here by watching Brian's arm-wrestling training with Devon Larratt. Amazed at the evolution of Eddie and how he overcame the obstacles to break the deadlift record and win WSM title. Both are highly intelligent individuals sharing lessons on overcoming the roadblocks to achieving super human feats not only on the physical side but also the spiritual side of life.
Looking forward to Brian's new endeavor in the world of arm-wrestling. May he go Over The Top!
