  • Quick little video where I bring everyone along on an oil change. They are pretty easy to do on Camrys. I use Mobil 1 full synthetic 5w-30 oil and a Mobil 1 filter, got them at Walmart. Hope you found this helpful!

I drive a 2000 Camry XLE with the 2.2 L. My car has 438 k miles on original engine the original engine. When I bought the car back in October of 1999 I was given a great piece of advice from an old Cuban mechanic in the Sears Auto Center. He told me to always remember that oil is cheap and engines are expensive. That is actually a pretty common Cuban expression that I have heard for years. I had read an article regarding the sludge build-up issue in the 2.2 L Camry engine. Explain to me but the problem was really because Toyota had recommended in their manual to change the oil every 8K miles. It was a marketing ploy as a way to lower the " cost of ownership" number down which was being used by a lot of the Camry's competition. He said that it was bad enough for them to recommend going so far between oil changes but in all reality most people exceeded that number of miles between oil changes which was much worse. Another problem happened when people would take their cars to the Quick Lube type places and even some dealerships that would tend to use the cheapest oil filters possible. He told me to always change my oil between 5K and 6K miles and to always request the upgraded premium oil filter which never cost more than $2 extra. He told me that it was unnecessary to use full synthetic oil if I changed the oil more frequently but if I did decide to use synthetic it would have to be a commitment. Instead he recommended that I drive the car using a regular quality oil and after 7 years or 100k maybe switching to a high mileage oil because hm oil has more detergents and conditioners it it. So 21 years later I'm driving the same car with the same engine and with the exception of several valve cover seals which are common on this engine and regular maintenance have never had any major mechanical work done on the car. In fact when I have the oil changed religiously every 5500 miles my car doesn't burn a single drop of oil between changes. My mechanic mixed jokes that the oil comes out cleaner than it went in. I have used Castrol GTX high mileage since the day I sent off my last car payment March of 2005. Every 75000 miles I do add a quart of duraLube and have since almost the very beginning. Believe me I am far from gentle on the accelerator with this car. Driving through heavy Miami traffic can take its toll on anyting between the Stop & Go stop and go and the occasional gas pedal Stomp to safely merge onto the freeway trying to not get run down by all of the other Kamikaze Julios. I also do a lot of highway travel as well. At least two or three times per month I do a 700 mile round trip from Miami beach to Gainesville and back. My last trip I was averaging 37 MPG on the turnpike with the AC blasting and the windows up. That's even better than the 31 MPG rating from the EPA when new. As someone who works in auto finance and can basically Drive almost any new car that I want I not only am emotionally attached to this car but I also hold it as a badge of honor. I'm so proud when I take a friend or a client in the car and they comment how smooth in quiet T is for an older car and they really shit a brick when I show them the miles on the odometer. Considering this generation Camry was redesigned over 20 years ago you can't help but notice how many of them are still left on the road in various conditions. I once heard from a fellow wholesaler that there would be three times as many still on the road if the car wasn't so good. I asked him what did he mean by so good. He said by the time the cars get their third and fourth owners ( usually not white) rather than maintain them they just drive them until something breaks. That's definitely true. I've seen so many of these that have expensive sound systems with giant speaker boxes in the trunk and chrome rims yet haven't had an oil change in 15000 miles and I've come across at least five that were involved in car accidents where they hit the car in front of them because the brakes were so bad in the pads were almost non-existent. I also drive a 2020 Camry Hybrid and have few complaints about the car other than I hate all of the obnoxious and complicated screens I just don't think it's going to last me another 20 years like the old one has. Another good thing by the way about the older Camry is that mechanics love it because there's plenty of room to work under the hood and they can get to everything fairly easily. My current and longtime mechanic tells me that the amount of hours required to fix or replace most things are listed in his computer as double the hours required to do the job. I guess no more $150 valve cover gasket jobs and it will probably cost me more than the $250 he charges to replace the alternator/ timing belt/ water pump kit? LOL

Toyotas have bulletproof engines. Just make sure to do regular oil changes and that's about all they need to stay running.

Honestly they are unbeatable! All my high school friends would crack jokes about me having a grandpa car, but for it being only $1500 and only having 130,000 miles, I could care less! They are great little cars!
