Time to work on some suspension next in Gearblocks. I have some ideas to make our chassis perform better and suspension is definitely critical in order to keep grip in corners.

Couldn't you have just connected speed sensors to each gear? So you find the top speed of each gear and then set up a speed sensor to change up/down automatically, for example between 0-30 it selects first gear, 31-60 it selects second gear and 61-90 it selects 3rd (you'd probably need 2 sensors for each gear and I don't know if they can have multiple inputs/outputs)

Or alternatively an actual physical shifter which actuates with gears or pistons which either contains angle sensors or move a physical object which can trigger distance sensors similar to an AD converter in Scrap Mechanic
Possibly a rack and pinion set to 1/2 keys with distance sensors either side, have 2 sensors on forward position and 2 sensors on backwards position,
Start by activating 2nd gear manually on a separate keybind
1 and 2 will activate when the shifter is engaged(deactivating 2), when the shifter disengages the other sensor will activate gear 1 & 2 (deactivating gear 1) when the lever engages in the opposite direction gear 2 & 3 activate and the 4th sensor will activate 2&3 again when it disengages
Food for thought, I'll give it a try myself when my new graphics card arrives

That's if the gears are set to toggle, you probably don't need that many sensors if the shifter is that stable 3 sensors should be enough, just one to hold it in gear for each of the 3 positions

You could use a clutch button to deactivate the gear like assigning shift to all the gears to deactivate, so when you change gears you press shift like pressing the clutch then select the gear.

unfortunatly thats not how the clutch gears work in the game, its 2 buttons that can turn it on/off not one to turn on and one to turn off. so if you had 3 gears (set to toggle), pressing 1 would turn gear 1 on, then pressing shift would turn 1 off and turn 2 and 3 on, then pressing 2 would turn 2 off leaving 3 on. And it becomes a mess to track. your idea is good but we need logic in the game before that can happen.

@@that86fiero and as I said that's not possible inside the game, both buttons will do the same thing, its just letting you have 2 controls for the same action. If you have a clutch gear set to toggle with the controls A and B, both A and B will turn the clutch gear on if it is off or off if it is on.
Or if the clutch gear is set to hold, then holding A or B will turn it on, and as long as one of them is held the gear will remain on.
Your just allowed 2 inputs for the same action, very useful for setting up Tank Steering ect.

so, not only will there be logic, but also advance logic things, 2 ways to make anything minimum
need just a basic system? gates, need something more? micro controler!
i can think of a few dozen different things to make when the logic update drops
if theres an angle censor, steam engines using linear acuators,
thats just the first thing i can think of, many more like proper turn signals, brake lights, arcade style shifting, automatic transmissions

Since you have basically built an automatic transmission (gear sets switched via clutches instead of physically moving gears), why not just go with speed sensors on the car to shift gears? Centrifugal clutches are a neat idea, and i think there was an IRL mini bike at some point that did exactly that, but speed sensors would just be simpler.

"Forget the following solution it would not work"
A solution that would work with a 3 speeds transmission:
Your transmission operates with 6 gears, with 3 of them acting as clutch gears. By utilizing 6 clutch gears instead, it would be possible to disable the remaining 2 gear ratios when ever pressing another ration.
For each ratio i would try:
    Ratio 1:
    - Gear 1: Enable 1, Disable 2
    - Gear 2: Enable 1, Disable 3
    Ratio 2:
    - Gear 1: Enable 2, Disable 1
    - Gear 2: Enable 2, Disable 3
    Ratio 3:
    - Gear 1: Enable 3, Disable 1
    - Gear 2: Enable 3, Disable 2
I believe this configuration ensures that the sequence 1, 2, 3, 2 would operate as intended.
    Hopefully, this explanation helps!

    • @workoutalfred
      @workoutalfred 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

@alwill123, I'm not sure you understand what i mean, or maybe theirs a mechanic I dont know about the game (I have not played gear block).
Lets simplify to only one of the gear ration:
In a system with two clutches arranged in series, the power transmission relies on the engagement of both clutches. The layout is designed as follows: Clutch - Gear - Gear - Clutch.
When both clutches are enabled, they work in tandem to allow the transfer of power through the system. However, if one of the clutches is disabled or disengaged, it disrupts the power flow. The series arrangement means that the power transmission is contingent upon the engagement of both clutches. Disabling one clutch effectively breaks the link in the chain, preventing the transfer of power through the entire system.
So, for a 3-speed transmission, you would want to toggle both gears ON when selecting a ratio and toggle OFF one gear of the other speed ratios to disable them. Regardless of whether the other gear of the disabled ratio is engaged or not, power would only flow thought the selected speed and not flow through the 2 other gear ratio.

    • @corporalwill123
      @corporalwill123 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

@workoutalfred I understood your original message, and I have played it
Both inputs are always treated the same, so you would either have
Gear 1: Hold 1 to engage, Hold 2 to engage
      or
      Gear 1: Press 1 to turn on/off, press 2 to turn on/off
if it was possible to do
Gear 1: Press 1 to turn on, press 2 to turn off
Then I wouldn't have replied in the first place

You could have the 1st gear on by default, and deactivate when you hit the second and third gear buttons. So touch nothing for 1st, one key for 2nd, another key for 3rd.
I'd also like to see you try to make a planetary transmission. Though now that I look, I don't see any ring gears. Maybe theres some way to build one if you go 3d. Like a small bevel gear in the middle that acts on two bevel gears at a right angle to it. And on the outside of those you can stick another gear to it so its rotating at the same speed as the center gears, but its further from the middle shaft. And that can ride on a crown or bevel gear.

  • @Ihsnetad
    @Ihsnetad 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

You can use two clutch gears for the "speed stage". One of the gears is always 1:1 (as passthrough), and the other is the actual gear ratio. It would help if you had to set them up as toggles on the same button, but one of them is enabled. When you press the toggle, they will switch their state. Then, you can link stages in a series to create "speeds".
For only two stages, you can have 4 "speeds":
    - disabled, disabled = 1 to 1 on all gears
    - enabled, disabled = 1 to (first gear ratio)
    - disabled, enabled = (second gear ration) to 1
    - enabled, enabled = (second gear ration) to (first gear ration)
You can use any gear ratio instead of "1:1" for passthrough; it will become your "first gear". You also can remove "passthrough" from the first "stage" to have a "neutral."

I think it would actually be easier to make a 4+ speed transmission that you could climb the gears in. You would need three buttons, and an additional axel with gears. One button would switch between a high and low range, where one range powers the first axel, and the second skips it and powers the second axel. The second button would be hooked up to all the clutch gears that connected the first axel to the second and the second to the third. Then the third button would be connected to one gear on the first axel and one on the second. The third button would act as a parking break, then when you hit it, the parking break would turn off and ensure that only once pair of gears connects each axel. Then the first two buttons would swap around which gears are engaged to change the ratios. You could also add a fourth button to separately control the top and bottom axels, instead of connecting the second button up to both. Either way, you'd end up with something like the diesel mechanical in Derail Valley, where you have a weird shift pattern that you could follow to climb up through a bunch of gears.

using the 20/12 and 12/20 ratios in the video
both 20 and 12 are divisible by 4, so that becomes 5/3 and 3/5 respectively. 5/3 is 1.666... as it is 1 third less than 2, or 6/3. the ratio for the other one is 0.6 because 3/5 can be multiplied by 2 to make 6/10, and 6.0 then becomes 0.60. so the ratios for the gears are 1.67, 1, and 0.6.

can you use speed sensore to make a sort of an automatic, when lets say you pass 30kph it switches in to 2nd gear and so on?

Not sure if any1s said it yet but it pullys are reversed on ur lik go karts
I used to build and race mowers, big pully on engine/ motor and smaller on axle gives more speed, I built a 95 craftsman lt4000 into a utility mower that did 26mph, 5.5"on the engine and a 3.5" on the trans with 25" tires

    Build a dual-clutch transmission!

  • @BenProVids
    @BenProVids 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

There are some transmissions that use pulleys and belts. They are called CVTs (Continuously Variable Transmissions). Basically, they have two pulleys that are connected via a belt. However, the pulleys narrow and widen. That changes the biting location of the belt on each pulley, effectively changing the diameter of the pulleys. That then affects the torque and speed.

    Hi kAN,
Could you add weight to your vehicles and see how they behave (possible locational weight), the levels on grip for the tires seems so low that it made me wonder what would happen.

I would recommend using the Trigger Buttons on your Gamepad for Acceleration (LT/RT) and the right stick for Gear shifting or even the Bumper Buttons (LB/RB)
Set the Gears up in this Order: (Deadman Style means Hold to trigger, Clicky Style means Press to Toggle On/Off)
High Gear -> RB or RStick UP, Normal, Deadman, Full 100% Range, No Deadzone
Medium Gear -> LB/RSDown as Key 1, RB/RSUp as Key 2, Inverted, Deadman, Full 100% Range, 20% Deadzone on RStick
Low Gear -> LB/RStick Down, Normal, Deadman, Full 100% Range, No Deadzone
This would achieve a smoother Gear Shift than holding down the buttons all the time, since you're only holding one button or the right Stick in the direction you want to shift...
Default would always be MEDIUM GEAR, if you hold LB or the Right Stick Downwards, you'll shift into LOW GEAR, if you intead hold RB or the Right Stick Upwards, you'll shift into HIGH GEAR
While i definitely recommend using the Bumper-Buttons (LB/RB) to shift more aggressively for tight Race Tracks, you might instead prefer the Right Stick instead since it kinda acts like a variable Gearbox-Driven Throttle-Control thanks to the Clutch Gears (for smoother, stepless Transmission where you otherwise would have a 3-Step Transmission (like: full down 50%, centered 100%, full up 200%, varying between any possible subvalue in the range from 50-200% depending on how much you press the stick up or down))

Logic gates seems like the easy solution here, but they aren’t in the game yet. I don’t think the capacity to make an actual gear shift exists yet either, but that would be sick to see in the future.

can't you just press the same button again to disengage the gear before selecting the next? so when you shift up, you press 1 then 2, or when you shift down you press 2 again then 1. It's inconvenient, but still less complicated than switching gears on a dirt bike
