I’ve just done mine today, no sunroof model. An awkward job to do but I’m happy with my results. I bought a yellow flowery duvet cover and used that. My beetle is yellow.
I love this! I did this years ago to my bug because I really wanted a purple headliner. It turned out pretty good but I had to buy a different fabric since the first one I bought wasn't stretchy enough and it made it too difficult to put on. I would have loved this video when I did it hehe, there was definitely a lot of troubleshooting involved. I agree it's fun and it makes your Beetle really personalized!
Thanks for this video! Purchased a moldy 06 Beetle TDI pretty cheap 6 months ago for a max mpg commuter car. After all the scrubbing the only thing left to do is the headliner. I had some idea where to start but now I'm more confident having watched!
Do you have any tips for getting the musty smell out? I just purchased a 99 beetle that has some water damage and a musty smell! I’ve scrubbed everything and cleaned the upholstery pretty good now I just have to replace the sagging headliner!
@@UntamedFireheart My only advice would be to remove as much of the interior as possible and scrub it with a distilled white vinegar and water mix or a bleach and water mix. I bought some drill brushes from amazon to aid in the scrubbing. I also removed the seats and carpet. My truck for cleaning the carpet when it's removed is taking it to your local self serve car wash, hang the carpet in the clips for floor mats and wash it with the pressure washer. Hope this helps!
Great video! Thanks for all the detail. I use cheap disposable gloves when I am doing something like this so I know they are clean and it's an easy fix if I get glue or dirt on my hands. I also put little plastic bags over connections that might get glue sprayed on the because I am a klutz, and I don't want to risk overspraying the glue into the electronics.
Sorry if this is a stupid question - but you are stretching the fabric a bit to get it into the lower areas, right? And that's ok? The fabric won't be nearly flat against some of those areas without pressing/stretching. (my first attempt failed - will be trying again with new fabric and better adhesive)
Hi! Very helpful video! I would like to attempt this and see you said you got the fabric at Joanne's. What is the material called? I heard headliner foam or .... foam in the video but i missed that other word
Junkyard is probably going to be your best bet. Shipping would be really high and if you get one from a dealer it will have fabric on it already. Good luck and thanks for watching!
Does anyone know is the sunroof suitable with the sunroof of the Golf,Polo or Jetta i have problems with mine and i can't find it second hand as a spare part
Ok, I'm getting started on the headliner. (Been a VERY heavy detail on the interior just to make it safe.) I started removing the interior components on the headliner and found some difficulty with the rear lights. In the video you say to "pull down on one side and rock them out" but I'm seeing a metal plate that I assume should stay attached to the headliner. The light does not seem to want to dislodge from this plate. Have you seen that before? Or do I just need to drop my purse and put my man hands on?
@@AutoScholarwithMrB cool. I'll give it another shot. This is my first headliner replacement so...standby for more questions.🤣 Seriously, great video. I got some rain I have to let pass before I can get back on it. Thanks for your help!
I found a very small crystal chandelier from a Chinese vendor. After hanging carefully in the Center, no one notices the sagging headliner fabric. I really wanted a disco ball, but could not find a small one.
Mr. B you do great work! Can I ask what state you are located in? Would you ever consider being paid a handsome sum of money to help me with my wife’s 2006 VW Beetle headliner? I would have the car shipped to you and you could take as long as you like completing the project. Thanks again!
It is too bad that VW continues to use foam backed fabrics for its cars. This is the same problem that the US built Rabbits had. It also occurs with foam speaker surrounds. The best solution is to use a different material.
Oh no I meant like just cleaning off the foam, glue and fabric off completely and just having the metal underneath. Like would that be possible or would it look like that orange layer always
👍Thanks Mr B, Very Useful Video👍

Glad to help and thanks for watching!

@@grislee1 adhesive is very important, also a little stretch may be needed.
I just pulled off the fabric and painted the headliner fiberboard matte black.
That’s a good fix as well! Thanks for watching Greg.
Ha, that sounds like a brilliant idea, must try that first.
Perfect! I have to do the headliner in my New Beetle. Do you have any suggestions on where to purchase the headliner material?
I got this at Joanne’s or Hobby Lobby, I cannot remember which one, but the color will be different if you go this route, unless it’s black.

Just ask for headliner material, they will know what you are talking about. Thanks for watching!
Hi, do you know where I can get this exact material you used? 2000 VW Beetle
I got this from Joann Fabrics but I am pretty sure Hobby Lobby has it as well.
Where could I get a headliner frame ( the part that you glue the material to) for a 2010 vw beetle?

Great content Thank you.
How do you recover the door for the sunroof?
Does anyone know is the sunroof suitable with the sunroof of the Golf,Polo or Jetta i have problems with mine and i can't find it second hand as a spare part
My sunroof is broken, it does not open, is this still able to do from the inside?
Yes
Im scared to take the sunroof off...im afraid I won't get it back on right and it won't work after that or seal...I love my sunroof!
AwseomeVideo Brother
What size fabric is needed?
I get three yards

They should just rock out with a flat head screwdriver. There is a metal clip that is attached to the light that has to be pressed in.

Approx what would the cost of this operation If I were not handy and needed to have this done for me? Asking for a friend.
I paid $300 to have mine redone. I have a 2008 Beetle
Thank you soooo much!!
Not a problem, thanks for watching!
Has anyone ever done a roof cut off an replace,I have a 2006 VW bug tree fell on roof?
What were the dimensions for ur headliner
How much should it cost??
Fabric was like $20 and two cans of glue are about $20 the last time I checked.
I just a video where they popped it out with all the pillars in place
This would’ve been nice to know back when I had my Jetta! The headliner in that sagged a ton, think I resorted to a DIY staple gun though! 😂
I found a very small crystal chandelier from a Chinese vendor. After hanging carefully in the Center, no one notices the sagging headliner fabric. I really wanted a disco ball, but could not find a small one.
My headliner is sagging in my e30, maybe I’ll try that!
I want to just bring you mine because you are very detailed and that quality work is hard to find nowadays. Where are you located anyway???

Why i was ok paying $300 to have mine replaced
did you have it done thru VW or an upholstery shop?
It is too bad that VW continues to use foam backed fabrics for its cars. This is the same problem that the US built Rabbits had. It also occurs with foam speaker surrounds. The best solution is to use a different material.
Could you just take the foam off and clean the top instead of buying a new fabric?
Probably not, the foam keeps the glue from soaking through and the fabric shrinks over time.
Oh no I meant like just cleaning off the foam, glue and fabric off completely and just having the metal underneath. Like would that be possible or would it look like that orange layer always
