What's tasty, abundant and high in protein? Bugs! Although less common outside the tropics, entomophagy, the practice of eating bugs, was once extremely widespread throughout cultures. You may feel icky about munching on insects, but they feed about 2 billion people each day (Mmm, fried tarantulas). They also hold promise for food security and the environment. Emma Bryce makes a compelling case for dining on bugs.

My biggest complain with eating bugs is that almost every source you can find in the US is expensive or sold in very small portions as a novelty. Not really feasible to become a primary source of protein in its current state.
Yeah...
Pet food stores sell meal worms
once more people take it up the price will drop. currently it's a niche product, so it costs more. Given it's a more efficient method of producing protein than any livestock production, it could potentially become cheaper.
@@rp1455 That's a good point.
Just buy them from a petstore. I have watched many videos of people that own lizards and such and since they have so many they buy in bulk. So it is possible.
Brainwash me first into seeing bugs without the ick factor, then we'll talk 💬
Nah, keep the ick factor. It's there for a reason. Wild Insects are carriers for diseases and live in unsanitary conditions. Farmed insects turned into burgers though would be good I guess.

I don't quite understand this video. It talks about how the Ancient Greeks and Romans really enjoyed bugs. The Greek civilization began ~800 BC and the Romans came after them. However, this video then goes on to talk about how humans lost their taste for bugs in 10,000 BC, when the agricultural revolution just began. These two statements were very contradictory.
Not really... it said BEGAN... as in the slow descent started here... Not that we suddenly stopped liking them over night.
And it also mentioned those cultures as ones that enjoyed specific bugs as specific treats... not ones that used them as a main source of nutrition.
Not eating bugs or living in a pod.

i wouldnt mind eating bugs, but the problem is the fact we are eating them whole which inclueds their intestines which is full of poop...
Shrimp.
Winterbeere48 Not really. Neither one of the examples is a waste product of the animal. Honey is basically evaporated nectar which is vomited by the bee for a food source. Milk is also a food source for calves. But eating a bug whole does involve eating all of the insides and waste as well. Not really a problem but contributes to the "ick factor".
Who gives a shit? (no pun intended)
How is that a problem?
tykill
You should. Changen Pan didn't quite nail it with her criticism, but it's along the right path: The problem with eating insects is that they often come coupled with parasites, like tape worms. House flies can carry tape worms, ticks carry babesiosis, plague from fleas, leishmaniasis comes from sandflies, hymenolepiasis from meal worms & flour bugs & cockroaches, liver flukes from ants & snails, schistosomiasis of many kinds from snails. Properly preparing insects is very, very important. You can become very sick very quickly if you just pick stuff off the petunias and have at them. Part of this is that you are eating the entire animal; generally speaking the muscles of an animal aren't the organs that contain (too many) parasites, the digestive organs are. This isn't an argument saying "let's never eat intestines of any sort," far from it. I love sausages and kidneys, but they need to be cooked properly -- and in a country that barely understands how to cook pork chops, I'm wary about people introducing insects. That being said, you're rather unlikely to get a parasite from a deep-fried meal, and that is similar to the traditional way of preparing many insects.

+Huy Rasavenger nice try (g)huy
Considering the fact that plants are sometimes lacking in a few nutrients such as vitamin D and b12, coupled with the fact that insects are consumed around the world and the only thing that is stopping us from consuming them are cultural hangups, i don't see how this argues for veganism, and I say this as a vegan.
+Kæla Brown In order to have a plant - based diet we need to rely on staple crops that are farmed on adulterated land... land that has been cut down to grow crops, with its previous ecosystem destroyed (which was intact for millions of years before we cut it down) . So to be a vegan you are still supporting invasive agriculture, unless you get all your veg and fruit from a Food Forest or forage out in the wild.
The truth is there is no black or white answer, and as annoying as that sounds, all it means is we have to expand our food supply to include more insects, mollusks, and other nutrient dense life forms that reproduce more quickly than plants or mammals
Shrimp is like lice, crabs are like spiders and lobsters are like big roaches. In a way, I already eat bugs, just big sea bugs

Thank you emma bryce,
This is why I hate humanity.
Not once in this entire drivel was this explored from THEIR point of view! You look at the health, environmental, historical, "ick" factor and even the taste, but you never once took a second to look at it from their perspective, to show our innate human-animal trait of EMPATHY AND COMPASSION and never once put yourself in their shoes and thought what it would be like to have your life cut NEEDLESSLY short by an advanced race "just cause."
Are we SERIOUSLY that selfishly pleasure-driven and gluttonous where we are COMPLETELY, I mean literally COMPLETELY oblivious to the perspective of the victim being killed? Are we SERIOUSLY? These nutrients are found in abundance from their source: the Earth! plant life, which we HAVE to eat anyways for optimal health, is is already abundant in these nutrients and there is no need -aside from the selfish thrill and pleasure seeking of you all, of "emma bryce,"- whatsoever to then INTENTIONALLY(not stepping on them which is unavoidable) kill them needlessly!
Where we don't even consider them victims because they are our "inferiors" and "just dumb bugs"? Clearly, Ted, that is why we have such suffering today! We have a mentality that accepts subjugating a group until they are no longer considered victims. Hell why am I wasting my time? Most are too bereft of critical thought for these words to even get through to them.
Are we really that much of a failure of an advanced race? Is humanity truly that great of a failure where we, all of these hundreds of thousands of viewers, have no concept of our compassion and empathy whatsoever? That we can only apply it to our own exclusive group whether that be species, age, race, class, stage of development or gender?
I am ashamed that this is supposed to be the crown jewel of education, and it fails to educate the most BASIC of human-animal traits: COMPASSION! I am ashamed of humanity.

because it's a museum and there's not a high demand probably. try buying ice cream at Disney (price is crazy). go to a south east Asia country ans they're probably cheap
