I'm not sure the group would have done much worse with the hill giants, to be honest. Oh, well, we got an exciting combat anyway. As for the timing thing, I don't run one-to-one; I keep a separate calendar, and just record the days from there. It removes all the guess work. Great game, as always!
I would never want to run encounters for a group that is camping in the woods for months as a catch up. It removes all agency from the players. I prefer to keep the adventure going and get them to town. But if a lot has happened in the rest of the world and it doesn't work to have them keep going at that time, I'd just hand wave them traveling back to town and staying there safely until they catch up in time. 😊 😊😊
