Probably my favorite goodhood-ascension story is that of Cayden Cailean, from Paizo's "Pathfinder" game. A fighter who liked to drink and party, one night on a drunken dare he attempted "the test of the Starstone" (which pretty much nobody survives, but if you do you ascend to godhood). He has no idea how he became a God, as he was blackout drunk at the time.

I used to play with a 3.5 D&D group back in high school (context: 3.5e clerics could worship a god OR an idea, and their belief was enough to fuel their spells), and they actually had a homebrew god that arose from a previous campaign’s player character. The interesting thing about him, he only had one TRUE follower, another player character who actually believed in the power of the other player so much he became a cleric of the (God) PC. Upon gaining a cleric to him, the God PC essentially gained Divine Rank 0, and became a lesser god with one Cleric, now traversing the world and seeking to understand this new power. Brings to mind an interesting idea of old gods creating worshippers at first, but then worshippers creating new gods by accident.

I remember Epic Destinies from 4e. One of them in the Player's Handbook was the Demigod. I've thought about making a 5e Epic Destiny as something you achieve when you accrue a set of specific Epic Boons. So a Demigod in this case might take the Boon of Immorality, Boon of Perfect Health, Boon of Invincibility, Boon of Planar Travel, and the Boon of Truesight and gain true godhood once they accomplish one final epic quest to fulfill their destiny.

Boons I think are one of the perfect ways to reach divinity!
I’d love to see leveling past 20 with prestige classes and multiclassing return so that boons are something else to be handed out at the epic tier that better defines your divinity and ascension to demigod status.
And have boons that are related to the domain or portfolio your character embodies be the prerequisite. Like intelligence and magic boons for wizards and artificers. You could become a demigod of wards & seals or of firearms or airships or automatons and the like.

My character in Pathfinder, after killing a demi-god, ended up immortal quite quickly; and then she planned to sit back and develop her family's home city for a while since she wasn't exactly in a rush to become a full fledged god... Too bad the other god-like entities in the region keep disrupting trade, and generally messing with her.

2e had "followers" that characters gained upon reaching 10th(ish) level. It's also when characters started to build a base (castle, tower, thieves' guild, grove, church, whatever). So, a large group of followers is not that far fetched. The difficulty was surviving. Remember, Tomb of Horrors is for level 10 characters.

@HunterkageJoestar yeah, gods are lore wise supposed to be around CR 50 BUT that's just their raw stats. They have divine abilities that don't fit into the CR system, like any greater deity can insta kill any mortal with no saving throw..so the CR 50 really only Applies if it chooses to fight you in normal combat and not use the HACKS abilities divine ranks give you. The CR 50 comes from cr 57-58 monsters where it states outright in their lore that they can kill multiple gods, but those same monsters are a supercharged greater titan and a monstrosity described as a " Proto-god" so presumably those insta-kill abilities don't work on them

    • @agentchaos9332
      @agentchaos9332 3 ปีที่แล้ว

@HunterkageJoestar well CR isn't the same as character level..a Leven 20 character only has a CR between 9 and 14 cuz CR revolves around fighting a party of 4.

Because you need more levels per C/R once above lv 20.
And probably because straight class hit dice gets odd after lv 20 in 5e so they'll probably also use Template Hit Dice.

At my table we have a rule that if you play a character to level 20 and then have them survive five modules where the party defeats the BBEG, then Ao takes notice of them and they are offered a chance to start working there way up the divine hierarchy. We haven’t had anyone make it yet. People get bored and want to try new characters or characters die in the process. However, there are two that are 4/5 modules down and currently competing to see who gets to divinity first.
One’s a neutral good Goliath barbarian looking to defeat a Demon Lord or an Archdevil for fun and become the god of (I kid you not) “heroes and fools” in the process. The other is a Lawful Evil half-elf wizard that no one else realizes is Lawful Evil. We don’t let anyone but me, the forever DM, see character sheets and she’s been super good about keeping her evil acts secret from the party (smuggling, war profiteering, protection rackets, etc.) and has been genuinely friendly to other members of the party, so they don’t suspect a thing. No surprise she wants to be a goddess of secret plots and intrigues.
Anyways, going to be using this video to help put together a “path to ascension” type homebrew. Thanks!

It's cool to watch this now having 4 pc's reach immortal status - 1 the fighter got it though a deal with death and became immune to the dead condition after his brother used a wish to bring him back from the dead. They ended up trapped in a infinite loop going back and forward in time and became a undying warlock patron. 2. Was my wizard who got turned into a undead mummylord by the deck of several things and ended up terraforming Athas and becoming the first Undead Warlock with at least one of her Simulacrum's managing to become a full on litch by level 20. The third was a bard who helped Askor the god of portals reform himself and was gifted the spark of immortality and the domain of the Multiverse as a result of having a god amogst his followers. and the last one agreed to be turned into The Lady of Pain as part of a plot by the Akanaloths to take over all the planes. She was later freed at the cost of destroying Sigil... her current status is unknown

Everyone at the table, " You have three dozen Similacrums turning out magic items and acting as clerics and angels for your lich mage ! "
Farmers pray for rain and crops, so Control Weather and Plant Growth does wonders.
Also Polymorph Other can turn cripples into functional able body working people.
Then there is the Emotion spell to create military Banner of Hope/ Courage .

@@jemm113 During that time it was " Spheres," but as domain goes, he was a god of Farming, able body Health/ Healing and Magic.
We also played with the concept of tearing off a piece of one's soul ( character class level/ energy level) and casting it aside to Reincarnate into another first level character. Then up grading that PC with multiple Wishes, so if it dies it returns back to the original host soul of the main PC.
AD&D source book Tomb of Magic had a cleric section of spells with a spell of 7th or 9th-level called Avatar where multiple clerics combine into one being acting as a host for their god's avatar on the prime material plane for a limited time.
Also had index card draws for PC with mystery backgrounds and abilities, pre warforge and more align with Fae fetches .. play ten or a dozen levels of character level growth then find the cloning lab you were constructed in. You were not .. born, but .. made. One woman had a fit that she turn out to be some form of plant and crystalline metal Frankenstein monster, but was overly happy when she rolled the shape change ability to become a dragon.
2.) Once WotC 3rdE came out in the early 2000's with better multiclassing rules and quicker lower level magic craft item rules, our deity and Blood War campaigns took on a whole new level of play. We also cross D&D with Star Wars to run a He-Man campaign.
Due to many of D&D magic rules, we just went with Whitewolf/World of Darkness(WoD): Mage the Awakening, werewolf spirit ban magic rules to run the lower plan fiends. We played a Blood War campaign as Succubus at the act of hunting other demons and feeding on them to grow in our own power. WoD has dice mechanic rules for that where D&D doesn't.
We also ran a game were everyone was neutral evil and were grandchildren to a night hag who acted as our fairy godmother. Needless to say .. we all ended up in as fiends/ night Hags at the end of the game. So we played night hags with two genders, just most people see male hags as ogres. More or less, once the PCs reach 8th-level wizard they just Polymorph themselves into hags along with the rules for 3e for become Lich. Instead of becoming a Lich the PC can chose to become a 12d4 hd wizard becomes a 3d12 hd baby dragon or lower plane fiend.
Stretching it, a 11th-level spell caster created a Lich phylactery could become a ghost or creating a warhammer of Thunder Bolts to make a Marvel comic/movie Thor hammer to aid another with. Problem with AD&D and D&D 3rdE, the spells other than Wish was the 7th-level spell Reincarnation and Magic Jar. So a Lich mini level should be 13th- and not 11th-level. But one player had a heavy reinforce +3 knife with Magic Jar cast on it, so when he was killed he acted as a ghost claim jumping and eating other souls through Enervation and Vampiric Touch and taking over host bodies that carried his knife/ phylactery.
3.) In a few games where I was running back up n/pcs magic aid the rest of the party and being a bit smug about it, along with metagaming. The shop's other DMs jump in and started acting like gods giving me a lecture about not interfering with mortal actions to much. You have clerics for that along with angels providing very mini help, in short I was breaking the divine council of gods/demons rules of helping mortals. It was a fun gaming shop.

@@jemm113 Dragonlance novel/ campaign setting, the Red Wizard Fizban was the Greater god Paladin the Platinum dragon helping the characters out by passing himself off as a bubbling abstinent mind old wizard. We just played that off into other game settings. Some PCs are demi or lesser gods passing themselves off as player characters with really good dice rolls, or bonus high level spells that save the parting, or just happen to have the right magic item to fix what ever given problem.
2.) The DM in one game started us off as 1st-level PC going through a goblin mine which our human PCs end up screaming and running down the cave tunnel being chased by a giant insect. Then she turn to the party and ask what us goblins were going to do next.
New guy, " What we are now the goblins, and we get to make up the cave system map as we go along ?!"
Older player, " Just roll with it."
DM, " Its your cave system home, you should know where the tunnels you dig go to. "
Game ended up with the PC human scouts for the baron team up with the goblins to over throw the bugbears, and goblins mining and selling the cave guano as fertilizer to the farmers. The giant insect shells was made into wood finishers. Goblins lived, PCs lived, the baron gets sale tax from fertilizer and wood varnish. We treat goblin as field rat catchers, if the goblins are killed off, field rat numbers eat away the farmers crops. Goblins can eat plants poisonous to humans so goblins eat rats and one set of plant life where humans farm another type. Goblins are still ugly little thieving bastards but they can be lived with, hobgoblins on the other hand are night stealth raiders and mercenaries but they can more than easy be bought off compare to orcs. So most farmers will bring charges on adventures for killing farm field goblins that live in the hedge rows.

Finder Wyvernspur gained divinity in the Forgotten Realms by slaying the dark god Moander, but then kind of squandered it. He didn't want to assume the full mantle of Moander with his portfolio of rot and corruption. He tried to remake the portfolio into "renewal of music" but he could only ever get two clerics to worship him. Eventually he dwindled down to a quasi-power that no longer could grant spells and became an Exarch of Millil. Lolth tried to grab corruption and rot by masquerading as Moander but I don't think that worked either.

In the 90s, I adapted the Immortals D&D boxed set into my 2nd Ed AD&D homebrew... lots of creative translations. Even though I have (had, I am still looking for the notebooks in my current house) volumes of hand-written 5-subject notebooks on it, it's still a work in progress. It's a LOT like what you addressed here in basics... probably because we both read the same source materials.
I have a Divinity scale which is based upon worshippers... which is based upon how worship of the player's form of divinity is accepted. Most choose to try to be a monotheistic version, that makes me giggle... it's the hardest kind to be. You have to not only ascent normally but literally everyone else must descend, including potential friends and allies, the quest for hubris of becoming the only god (or the only god of the spheres wanted) in Loom of Magus (my AD&D campaign settings). It's a scale of 0-20 then 20 gets a new scale of 20-0 to 20-20.
There are alternative (or early boost) "godhood" statuses too, like Living God (much like a Fallen God mortal type but never really ascends beyond being mere enhanced borderline immortal ruler), Avatar of [insert philosophy here] (much like Living God but a champion rather than a ruler), Fallen God (a god that died but was resurrected to his/her mere mortal form via a tiny desperate cult, pretty much a campaign setting for a different kind of adventuring which is a helping hand to divine ascension later but the gods take notice and meddle in petty ways), etc.
Except for my first group of AD&D friends, no other gaming group had a "god" go above being an exceptionally powerful player character... and that one was an "Intermediate God" whose biggest enemy was a national leader of the Living God type (no actual divinity but nationally worshipped as a god). That player's stuff could not brute-force overcome his biggest rival's comparatively infinite resources... and that was pretty much all he did to fight him when he did not make nice with him.
I need to reduce and streamline my divinity rules because most players who seek to go that route consider Magic the Gathering a thinking man's game of strategy... and not a buy-to-win online game in card form.

In the game I was running, the players had heavy involvement with Avernus.
Zariel set them on a path to fight Demogorgon. He had a corrupting aura that made it impossible for her forces to fight him as his aura affected evil creatures faster.
The players being good would be able to resist it longer. At the same time, a priestess of Tiamat was trying to free her from Avernus.
In the end, Zariel asked the dwarven blacksmith of the group to build a cage to hold Demogorgon. The group fought him back into the cage and Zariel cast it into the abyss.
Ogma sponsored the dwarf granting him a divine spark. The group dragonborn was turned into a dragon and was sponsored by Torm. A fallen Paladin in the group was sponsored by an evil fey queen and became a prince of twilight..
So 1 with godlike potential and a crafting portfolio. A dragon servant of Torm and a fey prince, favored by the Queen of midnight (i think).
I'm planning an adventure for these characters, so they can flex their divine muscles and experience the politics of the pantheon and maybe save a plane or 2.
They were all 19 -20 th level when we changed campaigns last.

The first REAL DND campaign i ever played, took a year. We played 3-4 days a week, and i mean like 12-20 hours at a time. We were all in our late teens and early 20's, had jobs that allowed for this, and it was the early 90's so jobs actually paid well enough to do atuff like this.
Anyway by the end, we all had about 30 levels in our primary classes, and 15-20 in our secondary classes.
At the climax, we ended up fighting not one, but 6 Pit Fiends AND WON!!! The DM had some obscure rule that if you killed a Pit Fiend, there was a chance for something he called "Hell's Retribution" (i wosh i could find the rules for it, but have been unable to). The jist of it is, when you kill a Pit Fiend, you roll percentiles, and if you rolled badly, a portal to Hell opens up, and lets through dozens of powerful beings from Hell. Flaming Skeletons, minor demons, liches, and even dracoliches, etc...
We ended up getting 3 Hell's Retributions and had to put down about 10 maps onto the floor, the the literal hindreds of evil creatures that popped out.
The Pit Fiends had already taxed us badly, and beaten us up. Then we had to deal with all of these new creatures and it was amazing.
Its been decades, so memory is a little fuzzy. But i distinctly remember the mage creating a gigantic wall of iron, knocking it over on a bunch of skeletons that threw fireballs, and destroying them. She then flew up to land on the wall to continue her assault. The 50 or so skeletons that were left, targeted her and she was blasted with an equal amount of Hellfire Balls, and turned to a pile of ashes.
My Paladin was chomped by a dracolich, and his dying move was to smash his mace of disruption into the roof of its mouth l, and i hit and the dracolich failed its save. We both croaked.
Can't remember how the rest of the party kicked off, but we all were killed in that final epic battle.
The all of us, including the DM, thought this was so much fun! So the DM had our characters pop in front of some deities who had been watching. They thought we were baddass heroes, and granted us immortality, and sent us back to finish the job.
So we all died, but immediately popped back in and absolutely rolled what was left of these evil creatures. Then we got to become minor parts of the pantheon.
What a cool way to end our characters!

This is mixing quite a bit of different settings here.
The basic/cyclopedia/immortals stuff had the Mystara setting in mind, a setting that doesn't have gods in the sense we know them (or like FR has them), but has beings that were once adventurers like the player and rose to immortality, hence Immortals. It's a good setting and I advise anyone to do a deep dive into it and the thunder rift, hollow earth and savage coast sub-settings for it.
The gods and deities book for 3e would've come out when FR was the main 'product setting' and during 3rd edition was the Time of Troubles, an era when gods were forced into mortal bodies and there was a lot of ascensions/resurrections/deaths. - That's why it the book would talk about ascension: Because the era was a shot at mortals taking a god's place.
Now obviously DM's can do whatever they like and the video is good advice, it just helps I think to see the context of what these books are talking about, as a player approaching a DM with this stuff might not get the reaction they're expecting if said DM is using a specific official setting, set in a specific official timeline (eg. default 'greybox' Forgotten Realms prior to the Time of Troubles is often a popular setting for FR fans with no big world-changing event in play).

I had a fighter to 10th that transitioned to a mage. Sure a mage that hits you with a staff having 18 (70 something) strength. When I was done playing him he was 10/21 F/m. Still the one I wanted to play more was after the AD&D Psionics handbook came out. Some how I did something to the Lich and in one round, bye bye lich then shattered the gem. The DM was OMG what the just happened. I might have been 7th level with an unassisted lich kill to my credit. At first playing like I was a crossbowman, then later impersonating as a priest of an unknown God. I even had a church. Not bad for a pionicst below 10th level. I think that I was about 14th level when a god came to have a little chat with me with an offer I could not refuse. Generally he was going to accept my churches conversion to his faith. The bad part, well I kind of became a multi class player with gaining XP for cleric and Psionicist at the same time. After that point we were transitioning to playing something else and he became an NPC. What I learned, do not steal followers of a god, say you are doing something in his portfolio when you are making things up, before you are ready. The best part was, none of the other players even knew I was a psionicist and just thought I was a fighter that just used a cross bow all the time until the halfling thief tried to pick my pockets and I crushed his poor body to pulp. They thought I was a dual class Fighter then cleric.

All the other gods are secretly the spark of other great wyrms that Ouram has eaten. Each god has a different domain and a portfolio based on that. Ouram has no domain and is not worshipable, because Mother Earth, the green lady, is actually the manifestation of Ouram's own spark. She was the first god, back when ouram was just tunnels of green.

    It's called: Agony and Coil.
Bassicly, a a Character, "Yours", was woken up from a battle field, f8lled with corpses, burnt branches, ans smoke.
The character then finds himself staring off into the sky, the character (,Your) chooses to go north, east, south and west.
This isn't important because It flesh out how your story will be severely affected.
Then. After a unconciius amount of time, you wake up standing infr9nt of a cliche tavern. You head in, and immediately sit down to a bartender. The bartender puts three glasses infr9nt of you. Each having a different gem inside:
    First one lays Titanite
    Second one lay Sardonx
    Third lay Heliotrope.
Your character has the same decision to pick which ever, without the knowledge 9wledge of why and what it means.
The Bartender then nods his head, picks up the glass and transmutation it into liquid. Which then is giving to you in which you drink.
    And then pass out.
Depending on what you chose, your characters ter starts out stats based on the choosing of the character. And is determined by the DM for what stats they are.
You wake up from that dream of walking, going to a bar, and drinking that glass.
You stand in the middle of an ally way. Then set of todo what ever you want.
However, within two days of fun, then comes a misfortune. I can be whatever the DM chooses, but it has to be the death if a parent, friend, liver, or companion of sorts.
The loss of the life will always lead down a path of fight, whether heroically or tormenting is completely up to the character.
    Or characters.
The character will always come across friends or allies. Find clues on who killed your favored chosen.
Then lead down a path of fighting for people, and then fighting a really big cult that caused your favored chosen murder or death.
    Big twist:
As he climbed the stairs barely grasping onto his weapons and gears. He finally met the man the killed his sister, butchered his little brothers and slew his entire village.
    MC"I have finally found you."
The Main Character will always have a need to outrageously adress the cult leader.
"Ahh yes, again you have found me. Who did you keep alive this time."
    The Cult leader will say.
With discust and disdain, the MC will abruptly cut down the cult leader.
Afterwards, the cult leader will transform into a godlike form. Inwhcih you "Your Character" will fight into an epic battle. Whether winning or losing, it won't matter
As you lay there in tiredness. If you beat or lose to the cult leader. He will always monologs this.
"Once again, you have beat me, truelly you are one of the best of us. No wonder why your ever so bored with human and Transending life. It's never enough for you. Well hopefully you were able to save more friends, help more folk, win wars and succeeded in what you set out to do."
The MC will the rant him selfe.
"Shut it you monster, you killed my family, tormented lives and played war as if it were a game." The MC would say.
The Cult Leader would always do a loud hollering laugh before saying. "You truelly are to most wicked God of us all. The irony of which you speak is only more true to the life you lived. Has ever occured to you, how you never got killed, through out the wars, fights. And battles, not one scratch has ever set upon your skin.
You could say it's Your Luck, Strength, or because you set it as so.
But your the worst one. Wake up, stop playing this game, this game you never can end." And like that the Cult leader dies.
Once you defeat or spare him you walk back through the doors.
And then you are re met by the bartender of which you started with.
Depending on what direction you pick, this will prescribe the amount of power you start off with. If you chose north, you naturealy powerfull.
East, will make you pwerfull but stronger on manipulating life
South would make you able raise dead, aswell abilities related to death.
West would make you able to controll any scenarios without using any powers.
    The three gems
Titinaite. This would grant you infinite stats and strengths
Sargonyx, this will grant you to manipulate a huge amount of energy
Heliotrope, this would let you manipulate endless supply of dark, necrosis, and void magic.
The bartender would then talk you, and all your friends, companion etc. And explain what all this means.
    The bartender explains.
So, you are a God. However, your A very powerfull God. So much so, you created a universe specificly for your story to be made how it was. To bored to wait to fight evil, so you created this game, fantasy, life on how you liked. But, you always had to end it on realizing you are a God. Whic then after full realization. You would then immediately transcend. Ending the game.
Now, you have two options, be God and end the story, or go back to humanity to rewrite you previous lives challengess, progress and adventures.

Anyone remember The Song That Doesn't End? I'd surmise a sinister curse that forces anyone who hears that song (with a few custom lines about how great I am wedge in in the middle there about as smoothly as this anecdote in the brackets) to sing it on repeat until someone whom hasn't heard it hears them sing it. When the whole world has cheered my name n countless have died cuz they couldnt find fresh ears, my name shall be like Voldemort except not as edgy, who am I u ask? Y, I am Princess Fluffybutt, feline familiar of clearly the world's most powerful wizard... he can make more food appear in the bowl just by shaking it... magic :3

Since there has been a lot of talk about how to become a god. Don't know if this is stupid, but i asked myself what if i want to become power full as a god, or at least at a level where i would pose a threat. There are a lot of beings in dnd far stronger than humanoids, dragons, liches, devils, demons, primordials and all the rest. The obvious answer would be homebrew, maybe becoming a tarasque hybride, becoming a lich or just keep mastering your craft, but i was curious how everybody would want to roll with it.

It really depends what tier of god you're talking about being a threat to, a tarrasque by itself isn't much of a threat to any god above demigod level from what i remember, but the main thing about the gods and a lot of the powerful entities is that they're rarely if ever forced to rely on their own strength to deal with threats having gathered large numbers of powerful servants to protect and serve.
I'd recommend looking up Epic level characters 21-40 on dms guild, and treat above level 20 character as potential demigods who still need to build up a following and at some point pass on/ascend to be a spiritual entity somewhere in the outer planes if they want to keep rising up the ranks of divinity with all the problems that brings with it.

What one of my characters would choice is because they are a necromancer they would become very powerful as a mage then get one level of death cleric and eventually try to become a lich after becoming a lich it isn't that difficult to imagine they would have a divine spark because of how clerics work

3.5e rules where easier to make magic item at lower levels then AD&D2ndE.
Read a poem/ prayer out of a " prayer " book. Triggers an arcane Magic Trap Item effect.
a.) Use the Emotion spell to create Banner of Courage/ Hope to create a false holy alter.
b.) Bestow Curse on zombies/ ghouls to chant " Praise to ... "
c.) Mask an amulet of Undead Control/ Destruction as a Holy Item of Turning.
d.) Use Polymorph Other to .. cure .. someone's Acne problem.

My necromancer would pretty much go the Veccna route.

what if I don't want to be bound to a sphere? what if godhood in the D&D sense is operating on a higher multi-dimensional level fueled by borrowed power from mortal souls? what if I want to tap into and harness that power for myself and not be beholden to worshipers? is that just a diamond soul Monk or is there more? what if I want to learn to manipulate raw magic like Mystra does? or whatever incarnation of her we're on now

Become a lich and live on the plane of Elemental Chaos.
20th-level wizard casts Ture Polymorph/ Shape Shift, gain the lifespan of an elf or dragon. Become a Titan.

What if I have a kingdom in my campaign that has a "God-king" who is attempting to ascend. Divine casters would be the shunned group (as opposed to the usual "no magic, magic bad"). He sends scouts and nobles around the continent to find any demigod or aasimar and bring them to him to steal their divinity. Oh man I'm excited.

And along with a Divine Rank of 0, you should also get 20 Outsider Hit Dice. A roughly +11 C/R.
