I'm curious, is this solo campaign more a Combat based campaign, or does it have rp and story telling also?

Here is some food for thought--take it for what it's worth. I noticed that you ran the lizard encounter as if two opposing armies were meeting on the battlefield. It would be nice to see differentiation of monster tactics based on intelligence and alignment. Non-intelligent, non-magical beasts based on our natural world (i.e. the giant variety of animals and insects) ought not to be relentless, nor particularly organized. I would think they would go for bolting horses more likely than prey that fights back. Lacking the ability to comprehend abstract ideas like strength in numbers through solidarity, those dumb lizards ought to have scattered in the face of an aggressive charge by loud shouting warriors. I won't even mention that the larger lizards would have probably eaten the smaller ones long before the encounter. At the very least, dropping rations while fleeing ought to have ended the encounter. My point is that this encounter seemed no different than if it had been a couple of hill giants, some bugbears, and a half dozen or so hobgoblins. And even if it were that scenario instead, I contend that chaotic creatures would not have the discipline to fight effectively as a group without a powerful commander or leader-type, attacking in waves based on movement speed or morale score, occasionally losing initiative due to indecisiveness, making poor tactical decisions, etc. Maybe someone (hint, hint) could develop a random action table for such types of encounters!

Daniel, I've been listener for a good while but I've been inactive for most of the last year. So happy to come back and see all the solo content from you. I almost exclusively play solo and I really appreciate your approach - seems like you approach it more as a game master emulating players, which is one of my favorite play styles but very few people seem to do it (at least on youtube). I haven't been able to watch much but I'll work my way through the back catalog... Thank you!

I'm not sure the group would have done much worse with the hill giants, to be honest. Oh, well, we got an exciting combat anyway. As for the timing thing, I don't run one-to-one; I keep a separate calendar, and just record the days from there. It removes all the guess work. Great game, as always!

A few problems encountered but well worked through

I would never want to run encounters for a group that is camping in the woods for months as a catch up. It removes all agency from the players. I prefer to keep the adventure going and get them to town. But if a lot has happened in the rest of the world and it doesn't work to have them keep going at that time, I'd just hand wave them traveling back to town and staying there safely until they catch up in time. 😊 😊😊

Is there any scenario where the monster encounters in the wild result in combat? It seems like the only consequence is having to move in a random direction.

You lose me with the whole "they're lawful so they wouldn't kill the orcs". Orcs are evil monsters. They slaughtered the previous party. They probably attack civilization regularly, causing havoc. Even lawful characters would say that they deserve death/execution. I understand that in a meta sense it's kind of cheesy to say that they surrender because of the Chainmail rules and then have the party kill them automatically. Personally I'd have them fight to the death when trapped like this, hoping that more of their comrades will come down in response to their horn.
