When two men get around to talking about feelings to each other, this is exactly what it sounds like.

    • @RedFlagSaid
      @RedFlagSaid 5 ปีที่แล้ว +65

It's a shame for a real man to feel anything. And if he does he'll have a dozen guy friends playing it too cool to really reach out, gloating ("better you than me buddy" etc; I guess they get high of the contrast ) and his women looking down on his ass (either with sympathy or with a mix of sympathy and disdain for the "weak" man). A mother or sometimes a sister will be supportive, but anyone else, especially working and lower middle class, shit man, you are so fucking labeled. You weak, not a real man, not good enough etc.
So yeah, if you are a working guy in capitalism you don't get to have feelings. You don't want to be seen as a weak bitch, do you?

@@ascuzzibabadibupi978 Dude it's not about someone's opinion of you. it's about how people act based on their opinions and intuitions. I like the story of the strong man "standing alone", going against the tide and all that shit, but that is just another myth of patriarchy. You can act it out when you have a job and a relatively stable life HOWEVER you don't get to have a stable life without money and getting a job in the first place requires a system that provides it. When the system doesn't provide it (and let's talk about the rest of the non-Western world where recession unemployment percents go up to 30 or even 50%) you need to move, leave, change job, change house just to survive - nothing strong and self-sustaining about that. You're a bitch to the system.
      PS
The number of friends per real man is really a butthurt comment. I'm very sorry if you don't have guy friends or colleges.

'some bad ideas in my head'- He has a degree of self awareness and knows that his inner notions are indeed bad. He can't reveal them to Wizard for that reason. He can't release. Wizard is left trying to give advice to a problem he hasn't heard.
Travis's struggle here is palpable, and brilliantly captured on film. Damn these people know their craft.

I'm guessing you meant to say "stare down", because I have no idea what it means to "state down" anyone. But in either case, no, that wasn't my point at all. I'm talking about how he wanted to open up to someone and unload his feelings, but not finding a way to do so. I can empathize with that feeling, but it doesn't mean I agree with his philosophies on life. In fact, I remember previously commenting on this video that Travis wasn't someone people should aspire to be like.

Eh but the wizards advice was not bad at all. He was explaining how Travis is simply a cab driver, not someone who can find change suddenly for the better. During the movie he's all mixed up, only to prove himself a hero. But the guys advice holds true, things are happening to different people everywhere, in different lives they all die, then he expresses envy for Travis being young and to just get drunk, have fun, relax, its all he can do. But in the end Travis is a thinker and a somewhat has an ego for he wants solely to be appreciated greatly or come about to an climax or pay off from his life.

As always DeNiro is awesome, but Boyle deserves massive applause too. The way he tries too articulate his own frustration mirrors Travis' own. Too me this is the most tragic scene in the film, two unwanted men trying to console themselves.

I definitely have for sure> I've gone through a few times where Travis's words describe exactly how I felt. But when it came to talking about it I could never find the words for fear of judgement and rejection. When I looked around my home town, watched the news, saw articles in the paper I kept saying to myself "How much better the world would be without these people." "Somebody should do something, Why not me?" And so on. But I think you can eventually overcome it with by finding something worth while to occupy your mind. For me it is improving my health, eating right, exercising. Yes I know it sounds corny but I feel better for sure.

Another little detail in this that shows just how tragic this scene is, is Travis’ eyes. They look sort of glassy as if they’re full of tears. For a lot of the movie he’s emotionally dead or displaying some kind of anger, but in his eyes here he looks on the verge of tears, he looks visibly upset. He’s trying to communicate and Wizard doesn’t understand him, he truly is alone.

I think this scene is meant to further illustrate the void between Travis and the world around him. Throughout the film he is unable to interact with the people in his life. He attempts to reach out and get help, but can't communicate what is going on internally. Wizard doesn't understand what's happening and can only make shots in the dark. "Go get drunk, get laid, quit worrying so much." Travis replies in the end by saying "That's the dumbest thing I've ever heard." No real communication ever takes place, Travis is truly alone.

Essentially, find your spot and go, and since you're young an kind of a blank slate, the sky's the limit. It surely would have worked for many others. But for Travis, it just...wasn't...enough. They're both having trouble communicating their thoughts. I think Wizard is genuinely trying to help here, but Travis isn't giving him much to go on. Ultimately I think he's trying to say "you are who you are". His closing statement "You're gonna be alright. I know, I've seen a lot of ppl". In the end Travis was alright.

One thing that is often overlooked in this film is Travis's longing for purity. Despite being an impure man himself, Travis looks upon the corrupted world he is exposed to, and sees something which he hates, filth, trash, crime, and debauchery. It's something that occupies his presence so much, that it consumes him. He is immersed in filth. He can't even look at his own eyes in the mirror without seeing that which he is so bothered by.
Travis does what he can to escape that which bothers him so much, like pursuing a seemingly pure woman, and seeking advice from Wizard, but to no avail. The impurity, combined with his social inexperience and implied PTSD eventually overcomes him and pushes him over the edge, causing him to act against that which bothers him so much.
I think a lot of people misinterpret Travis as sick or deranged, but it's made quite clear that he is pushed by a longing for what he sees as good, and is even in deep denial and fear of his own impurity. The man is consumed by that which he hates so much, yet still has a strong sense of morality deep within.

They both understand the problem they face, but can't articulate what they mean. Wizard uses metaphor to describe the general idea. You work a job, and that's who you become, that's your purpose. Whether or not it's a fulfilling purpose doesn't matter, you have to work, you have to pay the bills, pay your way through life.
Travis is at the initial stage of this existential dread. He's doing unfulfilling work, he's going through the motions, he's playing an unimportant role in society, the life of a cog or a drone. Wizard did it long enough he just accepted it; that's just how things are, your role is your purpose. Some people fill other roles, some better, some worse. Some people live in different places, some better, some worse. People die and leave their roles, other people are born and take their place. But we're all in this shit together; "We're all fucked."

In the dvd commentary, even Paul Schrader, the scriptwriter, said that wizard gave bad advice to Travis. I'm not sure if it was that bad but it might have been a bit unhelpful and too vague. Maybe he should have asked more questions (what kind of thoughts, what do you want to do in life) and given him more of a purposeful direction rather than telling him to accept his problems. He should have also told him to seek mental health help.

Something to consider that I have not heard anyone discuss in commentaries regarding this movie. Travis was definitely showing signs of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder; obviously stemming from his combat experience as a Marine in Vietnam (remember the early scene showing his apartment where you see a captured Viet Cong flag draped in his closet). His untreated PTSD engages the alternatively seductive and dangerous nature of the streets of NYC and this movie shows the results. The incredible thing is, PTSD as we now understand it was not officially recognized in 1976, when this film was released. Travis was NOT a sociopath, as some state below.

I kind of felt for Wizard in a way, you can tell he channeled that same bitter angst and melancholic depression Travis has for eons and he just came to a point of helpless submission to the grim nature of reality, embracing it for what it is, acknowledging this is it, this is this, you know.
Travis represents the face of youthful naivete confronting the macabre nature of reality while Wizard represents the old soul that has finally learned after years that the only way of coping with shit is to just accept shit for what it is
You either explode in a shootout that amounts to nothing or find yourself living a purposeless life fulfilling your own cog in the machine
" I mean, you become - you get a job, you become the job. I mean, one guy lives in Brooklyn. One guy lives in Sutton Place. You got a lawyer. Another guy's a doctor. Another guy dies. Another guy gets well. And, you know, people are born. I envy you, your youth. Go on, get laid, get drunk, you know. Do anything. But, you got no choice, anyway. I mean, we're all fucked. More or less, you know."
Because at the end of the day, this bitter angst shit, it wears at you, and it's not going to change anything, even if you try to go on this proverbial suicide mission, nothing changes. You're better off embracing the absurdity of it all instead of letting it drive you mad.
" Go on, get laid, get drunk, you know. Do anything. But, you got no choice, anyway. I mean, we're all fucked. More or less, you know." This quote by wizard strikes me the most. He acknowledges that the escapist distractions that do exist (alcohol, drugs, sex, etc.) are just that- distractions. They're merely temporary band-aids for dealing with existential dread. We are all fucked, but once you accept that, you can begin to find some semblance of peace instead of driving yourself mad like Travis did.

I watched Taxi Driver for the first time recently and this was my favourite scene. It demonstrates the burden that all men must carry: The desire to ask for help with mental health but the struggle to find that help. Or, when you are suffering even more than your peers, the immense loneliness you feel ... when no other men can understand you, but they try to and it all turns out to be very offhanded and quick and over with. And De Niro's acting is unbelievable. This is a very important movie

I think this scene is meant to further illustrate the void between Travis and the world around him. Throughout the film he is unable to interact with the people in his life. He attempts to reach out and get help, but can't communicate what is going on internally. Wizard doesn't understand what's happening and can only make shots in the dark...I don't blame him. "Go get drunk, get laid, quit worrying so much." Travis replies in the end by saying "That's the dumbest thing I've ever heard." No real communication ever takes place, Travis is truly alone.

"The whole conviction of my life now rests upon the belief that loneliness, far from being a rare and curious phenomenon, peculiar to myself and to a few other solitary men, is the central and inevitable fact of human existence. When we examine the moments, acts, and statements of all kinds of people -- not only the grief and ecstasy of the greatest poets, but also the huge unhappiness of the average soul…we find, I think, that they are all suffering from the same thing. The final cause of their complaint is loneliness."

He's desperately trying to reach out to someone, this is his last chance at straying from the path that he eventually goes down, and this dumbbell lacks any sort of understanding of his situation, and just goes "Yeah, you're alright, you're gonna be alright." I picture the wizard as being the typical loafer, plopped in front of the television at home, flipping between main stream trash with his belly out, laughing obnoxiously at stupid comedy routines, eating up everything the news channels have to say. A "good guy" with "good intentions", yes, but "no Bertrand Russell" for sure. Travis was clearly barking up the wrong tree.

Travis doesnt mind being a cabbie. this scene is about Travis attempting to seek help because he knows hes going to lash out at something.

what I love about this movie is that it captures the old NYC big time. I used to walk down Forty Deuce (we called it cruising the deuce) just to get this sick kind of rush, walking past the hookers, pimps, junkies and panhandlers that roamed the area 24/7. I found it FN fascinating. maybe I'm fucked up because I miss all of that. Now I joke around with people telling them that the city has become a modern version of Thorton Wilder's, Our Town. Now that's depressing.

i feel the same about mid 70's london we'd go up west and check out soho and that. I went back last year after being away 30 years and it's all boutiques and clothes shops it's soulless.

this scene is so fucking sad man. the guy is spiralling down in his mind and grasping for help but he doesn't know how to express it or who to turn to. And when he turns to this guy, the guy doesn't even understand that travis is begging for help and instead gives him generic advice that makes no sense further showing how isolated travis is. Sad scene

Dominic L I always thought by "bad ideas in my head" he meant take matters into his own hands and rid the area of the " scum and trash" that he sees on a daily basis as a taxi driver. I think he just wanted to do something. Anything. In the end he kind of made a dent....Hey, thanx for noticing my comment, Dominic! :)

I hate my job so much but things like this make me feel better. What you have is just your lot in life. As soon as you start believing you could achieve all these great things is when you can go crazy when things don't go the way you want them to. So I just accept what happens and I say to myself: 'this is me, this is my life, I have no control over what happens ...' And then move on. I am a believer in God so I know where I'm going but as for this world, this life, it is cursed. And only those who are cursed will succeed in this life and have barely any obstacles in their path. The good people have to suffer and get all kinds of hurdles in their path. I accept that. You either win in the worldly life or you win in the afterlife. Some very special people get both and some very cursed people lose in both lives.

Yeah. It’s easier for the believers to go through such periods in life. I am a believer in YHWH and His Messiah Yeshua.

Interesting. My life isn't perfect and I'm definitely not crazy about the state of this world these days... But I love my job. In fact, with everything that's gone on in the last few years (not just personally but politically, with the pandemic etc), I might have gone Travis if I didn't have my work! Professionally, a lot of my dreams have come true; I've *made* them come true. But everyone's path is obviously different. And FWIW, I had jobs in my 20s that I hated. So I appreciate my work now even more.

Either the wizard never had the existential angst that Travis suffered from, or he once did and simply accepted his lot as just another cabbie. I think Travis would have gone off the deep end sooner or later, but I like to think that whatever was eating him inside, if properly harnessed, could have brought him the personal distinction and self fulfillment he was striving after in a much more positive way than how things turned out for him in the movie.

great scene great movie. people become their job way more than they realize. listen to any subject matter expert and you will be astonished at how much fault is in their view of everything. i had a professor who was an expert in the field of disabilities. she would with the utmost sincerity diagnose people with disabilities because they fit some symptoms on a piece of paper. absolute tunnel vision. she thought she was what normal was. as in everything is relative to her. haha. they dont even play with the idea that they not only might be but are probably wrong. ego is a motherfucker. look at the federal reserve. america operated perfectly fine without it. nowadays ask yellen if we need the federal reserve and she would say, if the u.s. treasury printed their own money then the u.s. would crash in 3 days. haha.
