"Pick of the Day" - 1954 Fender Stratocaster and 1966 Fender Pro Reverb

- Jay's pick of the day is a Dallas International Guitar Festival find, a beautiful Stratocaster from 1954. A medium weight instrument with a Tadeo Gomez neck date - this guitar has all the '54 parts short of a volume pot. Jay will give you guys the run down on this guitar before handing it over to Aaron Hiebert to plug into the 1966 Fender Pro Reverb we've been running with recently!

My very first guitar was a 1954 Stratocaster my dad gave to me, for Christmas of 1963. Pretty sure it was a pine body, as it had
a couple knots ...
Serial number was 0517 or 0571 ... It went out the back window of my brother's station wagon, 25July1965 on the Jacksonville expressway.
I lived eight years in Tallahassee. Great guitar town. This is a very sweet Stratocaster in every way.
Dang. Retrospect really burns doesn’t it! I’m guessing it was also ash though because we’re building a strat from ash right now and there definitely are knots in ash too! Cheers

Just bought an American Original '50s, in White Blonde Ash, and have yet to plug it in as it needs to have the nut cut properly. But the neck is real fat and the guitar has killer acoustic sounds! What happened to it?
@@dathunderman4 It was very dark. Some "nice" fella stopped and picked it up and hauled his lovely self and my guitar into the blackness of the night. Probably been under a bed or in a closet ever since.

My old Tele also has an almost one-piece ash body…part of the cutaway horn is a second small piece.
That is a great piece of ash.
A lot of that weight was from the bridge block.
Does the 1966 Pro Reverb have a 15" speaker ? I'm digging it's tone

Sorry to say, but ‘54 hasn’t got “single line tuners” Klusons. They came into year of ‘56. ‘54 has got the no stamped covers, but underneath there is the Pat.Pend. stamp.

Hes just arpeggiating D, to G, A, then back to D, so a 1-4-5-1. I'm not sure if he's playing something, or probably just making something up that sounds good, like usual. Many pretty songs are written using this progression. Go to around 5:45, and it'll show the shapes he's using so you can play it too. The D he opens with is a fun shape to learn if you haven't yet. Just think, if someone back in 1954 were to have bought this new and hardly ever played it and held onto it for so many years, the guitar would be worth well over a fortune due to a lack of wear and no one messed with it.

The sad thing is other than the butchery to the headstock and the pot being replaced that you can still get them with the same wood, same look, sound, and feel of the originals today although not exactly the same. Also you cannot go back in time and get one as they only made so many of these and the good old days are gone forever! Still this has that vintage Fender mojo that even the guitars made today will never posses. Thank you for sharing this with us. Maybe next time have someone really good play this for a demo in a video?
When he said the words 'piece of ash' at around 0.48, something very strange happened in the head and neck area...maybe he said 'piece of ass'...that would explain things.
single line klusons on a 54... oopsies
if i could have any year strat ide want a 59 with a rosewood board maby a blonde or a burst would be fine im not that picky i dont need a fiesta red or anything custom. dose not need to be mint cond a very heavily played guitar is preferred and its ok if a pots ben changed or if its got some extra holes here and their from tuner swaps done eons ago those all add to the uniqueness of the particular instrument. i do prefer original pickups but a rewind wont turn me off all that much if its got a great tone still.unfortunately im poor and will never be able to afford to the privilege of preserving something like this for the next gen of rich people to own as status symbols most likely. as for my dream guitar in reality a player condition 59 is what 30k or more? what working player can afford that? and they will only get more and more valuable i think.

My understand is there lumber was over sized and hand cut with a band saw you can see this in videos

I have seen Tokie guitars with this same manufacturing fix this is something the Japanese do well

In all my years of playing and selling I know of NO player that would replace regular Kluson's for those disasters !!

The headstock shape seems too angular to me, so I'm suspicious too.
This was pretty common on early fenders where the would glue a small section onto the body like this.
