You should try hot air wicking at some point for those through-hole components, add solder and flux to the pad, then roll up a piece of wick or cut it so you have a fine sided edge small enough to enter the hole, hot air the area and push the wick into with some tweezers. At least for me that's the method I finally stuck with.

My favorite methods if you don't have a desoldering gun are:
      - Heat the zone with hot air and do a pass with a wick + iron right after, before the board cools off. (bonus points if you have a pair of soldering tweezers instead of the iron, so you can grab the piece of wick with them. It's the method used by NorthridgeFix)
      or
      - Heat the zone with hot air and use a manual solder pump at the same time (best results overall, but it can onyl be used for holes)
      - Also, if the holes are pretty small and don't want to come perfectly clean, I'll do a final pass ONLY with the soldering iron and with the *smallest* tip I have (usually those bent ones used for microsoldering), and use it to poke clean the hole, in a way pretty similar to the method Adamant used in this video with the led feet here, but it works far better and quicker. Be sure that the tip is veeery clean from any solder ofc! So the solder from the hole will want to stick to the tip instead of adding solder to the hole (these are one of those rare cases where I still use a wet sponge to clean the tip)

Before I knew very much I found a flux coated length of bare copper wire fed through holes would clear them quite nicely.
Just keep feeding and heating. Snip off the now tinned fed end when the hole is clear. Very gentle with through holes.
But now it's my Hakko. Swapped out a 40 pin VFD with another still in the board in around 10 minutes.
I've come to enjoy your videos.

I’d really recommend some stainless steel hollow desoldering needles for clearing out any through-hole vias on PCBs if you find yourself messing around with through-hole stuff regularly. They clear out the solder incredibly easily! You can get them in kit form where you get a selection of sizes for all the common via diameters.

@AdamantIT Use a tailor's head pin to clear the holes. They're small enough to go trough the holes and solder does not stick to them.

Oh Darwin yes!!! Actually partially broke one recently. As you know they are miserable to remove and replace. You always feel you are gong to break it. I didn't realize that the gold ring can actually be lifted off it's little pad. Bit to much side pressure. Now it's a bit wonky and will never be the same.. It works but is tainted forever :\ Moral of the story, at lest mine is not anchored as well as I thought. Cheers

I have in Electronics for 50 years with repairing Camcorders and other high end equipment. All the new equipment for disordering where not available or to expensive to purchase. I used solder wick but before you use the wick I got a small tin of manual paste. Run your wick through the paste and you find it works much better for you. AS a note my first hot air was a hand held pyro pin that I used to years...... Take care Mike

What really works well for me when clearing holes with big thermal masses on them (like on DC-jacks) is "dual wielding". Hold a regular soldering iron to one side of the hole (not dead center, so it does not block the airflow, just on the pad around the hole) and then use the desoldering gun on the other side. That way, you get more heat into the hole and have the solder molten for a little longer, so more of it can come out.

I've used toothpicks in the past, also very small flat blade screwdrivers. You can get very narrow toothpicks, or you can use fine sandpaper to sand a fine point on an ordinary toothpick by rolling the point against the paper.

Did a similar DC jack replacement, also on a Lenovo laptop. Used the chisel tip soldering iron, but also tried the pencil tip, but the chisel proved better. One thing I could have done when soldering the new jack in, would have been to use a small clip, like an alligator (crocodile to you!) To keep the jack level on the board. Thank you

Try forcing the new jack in, then when it's sat at a weird angle, getting a wooden clothes peg around the jack and the board to apply pressure then putting hot air on the underside until the solder melts and it'll all of a sudden drop flat. If you're lucky will be before the clothes peg catches fire, although there will always be some smoke but it's actually quite a nice woody smell.... it's worked a couple of times for me, absolutly fine.

Possible method for removing solder from small via's. I basically do the reverse of the solder-sucker. I get a bit of new solder in the hole (sorry for that visual), heat it to molten (duh) and give it a shot with the Dustoff (air). Oh yeah, DUCK! Seriously, just point it toward the table etc. It should be quite tiny (at least that's what my urologist said. Thank you! I'm hear all week). So ends the "it takes a village tip share". Cheers

The wetting and bonding of solder is provides by flux. Seemingly ridicules amount of flux used by Louis Rrossmann and Alex of Northridgefix is justifiable due to that fact. I think, flux should be present, when the iron tip touch the board. This is a common mistake most of us doing.

The stainless steel type works a treat as solder not adhere as easily to it.
