  • The nicknames some RAF pilots had are just fantastic and so too are the stories behind how they got them. Wing Commander George Cecil Unwin is no exception, and this is the story of how he got his name 'Grumpy'.

I knew a Joiner nicknamed Lofty because he looked like Lofty from “It ain’t half hot mum”.
Then he accidentally cut a new loft hatch in the middle floor of a 3 storey building.
This gave a new context to an existing nickname.

Some nicknames also came about by the initials of the person, e.g. the politician R A Butler was known as 'Rab'. One curiosity that comes to mind is 'Dusty', seemingly bestowed on everyone with the surname Miller. *wild guess* Maybe the flour some millers got covered in looked like dust?

Nice story, one thing that did strike me when you look at "grumpy's" postings was how little time these chaps actually spent on combat ops compared to the Jerries.

Hearing G Unwin describe Douglas Bader as a “glorious leader” actually goes against the grain with me, I heard quite a few stories about D Bader during my service and many of them were complementary about his flying ability, in spite of losing his legs, and his bravery, determination etc, but, and there is always a but, I don’t recall any about his leadership or personal qualities, there was a “rumour” about his final sortie before having to bail out over occupied France, and that was that he was actually shot down in a “blue on blue” “accident”, I can’t remember the name of the person who told me the story and I don’t recall whether it was a deliberate act or purely an accident, but having read “Reach for the Sky” many times and watched the film on numerous occasions I think that it was entirely plausible that he was shot down by one of his own pilots, the reason I say that is because he was a very selfish person who was also very self opinionated and headstrong (that’s why he lost his legs in the first place, over confidence and an unwillingness to take criticism from anyone.
As much as I admire D Bader for his flying ability, his refusal to let the loss of his legs 🦵 restrict him from doing anything and for the example he set for other amputees, but I don’t think he was the person who was portrayed in the film, his biography or “This Is Your Life” moment, I could be completely wrong in my opinion, but I could be right as well, perhaps someone with far more knowledge than mine might put me straight.
It is refreshing to learn about Mr Unwin and how he got his nickname, I much prefer his version of the event that earned him the moniker, and I am glad that he was commissioned later in his career, but I also think that anyone who had the ability to become a pilot within the RAF should have been commissioned and not left being a SNCO pilot, after all they, especially fighter and bomber pilots were in as much danger as the commissioned variety, and probably had better common sense than most of the “Ruperts”.

Bader was certainly a controversial character! There is a video on TH-cam where even his wife says ‘you loved him or loathed him’. He was very rude to those ‘in the ranks’ for sure.

I remember a movie where a young fella wanted to do something better than go down underground and stuff up his lungs for a living. The father went on the usual mantra, "Your great grandfather was a miner, your grandfather was a miner, I'm a miner, and you will follow in their footsteps!", to which the lad replies "Yes, dad, follow you and our ancestors into the nearest grave at an early age, no thanks Dad, I have other careers to follow!"

It depends upon what purpose the pictures are shown. If you are trying to maintain historical purity then stick with b&W. However many younger people do not relate to monochrome photos viewing them as old or remote so used are they to colour pictures. By colouring these pictures it contemporise them to a younger audience. The WWI film " they shall not grow old" was a case in point. What did you think of that assuming you watched it?

@@tristacker Young people should be challenged to think for themselves and be aware of history. Too many young people are pandered to . Colouring in just keeps them childish.Who says the colours are correct anyway ? It is only my opinion but you said it yourself "historical accuracy"
Once you start to change things where does it stop ?

    • @tristacker

@@egnr9668 Those that are naturally interested in such history may not be put off by B&W pictures. But actually getting youngsters who have not heard of say the battle of Britain, and many teenagers today will never have heard of it, using formats they are comfortable with may just allow them to not just dismiss this period as ancient history and engage with it. If you think this is pandering then fair enough but don't expect anyone other than buffs to watch these films.
