American here. I have always understood Cilantro to refer to the herbaceous leaves and stems, and Coriander to refer to the seeds, which have a much different flavor than Cilantro. Good advice, and good video. Thank you, Sir.
I'm a certified Master Gardener and I did NOT know that corriander seeds could be scarified and split to double your plants! Thank you for teaching me something new kind Sir.
When I was little (80's) finding coriander/cilantro at the store was nearly impossible so older American desis and their parents usually use EVERYTHING stems too. Aunties started growing it and sharing it but it was like a commodity you could never have enough.
It took a while for my seeds to sprout, compared to other seeds planted at the same time, but now they are growing like mad. I'm so happy! My favorite herb!
Very very useful and effective tip of using sand paper to split the coriander seeds. Thanks for sharing. I have basically noticed two types of seeds in the market. One is absolutely round and bigger in size, pale yellow in colour and has been seen since the childhood times. Another one seen frequently now a days, smaller, elongated and comparatively more yellowish. Also seen two types of coriander leaves in the vegetable market, one with dark green bigger broad leaves, said to be grown in hilly areas and another one with smaller shiny light green leaves said to be "Desi Variety". Please guide accordingly.
Wow. Didn't even occur to me to just buy a big bag of seeds at the Indian food store. LOL, I'm an airhead. Especially seeing as how I bought a big bag of whole peas from there for sprouting. Thanks for the tip. We eat vast quantities of cilantro at our house. Didn't know it was okay to plant like that. Just joined your channel. Your information has been invaluable to me, as I'm a crappy gardener. Hope that changes this season!
I tried both ways, which crushed the seeds using heavy object and sand paper as in the video. Trust me as he mentioned method using sand paper sprouted in 4 days while the one crushed using heavy object took a week to sprout.
Will follow all your steps. Going to plant the coriander for the first time. I wish to know where to place the coriander from begining till to the end.
Your videos are very descriptive and informative. Thanks. I've tried growing coriander in my balcony many times. It is very open, airy and bright, though we don't get direct sunlight more than 2 hrs in morning and an hour in evening. While they germinate properly, growth is very slow. And they bolt (flower) very quickly. This time actually, they bolted right after germination . They barely gave one leaf and started flowering. Not sure what to do. This Is monsoon season in pune. They don't sit directly in the rain, but get the sprays. If there is no rain, i try to water when I feel soil has dried a bit
From another TH-cam channel, I learnt to split seeds into halves using the rolling pin! I followed their technique of mixing seeds with compost, tying them into cloth bundles, keeping in the dark and spraying water on those cloth bundles twice daily for 3 days... None of the seeds sprouted as was told... To make matters worse, the cloth I had used had run colour, so the seeds were coloured blue-green!! Very upset and disappointed I still sowed the seeds into 2 large basins with potting mix. I continued to pour water for 3 - 4 days and there was no sign of germination. I totally forgot all about it when after 10 days of disregard one plant had grown... in the next 3 days 6 had grown... At the sign of the first plant I began watering... At the end of a week I had the 2 basins crowded with new plants... I had totally kept them in shade that they were sort of turning yellow... So I shifted to complete sunlight... They have grown dense and strong... It must be a month now and they are 5 inches tall... I have read most of the comments here and Sir's apt responses are such useful tips... Thank you very much Sir for your patience in answering our questions... Thank you for teaching a new technique to split open seeds ... Sir I am facing an issue with my bumper crop of coriander plants which I shall post as my next comment... Kindly help me out, please...
Actually, my grandmother who wasn't much educated used to rub the seeds with a footware on a coarse cement surface. This is exactly like rubbing the seeds with a sandpaper because the base of the footware and the cement floor were both rough. And she never used to beat or pound with a footware but rub the seeds..the pounding is a recent, mistaken way. Our elders were intelligent no doubt.
I'm unsure of why/how I am somehow, "unsubscribed" from your channel.. but, I can tell you- I have *NEVER* done so on purpose! Look at the subs you have, friend. Well earned *AND* deserved! Keep up the great work and keep experimenting! (Some people just, *"NEED to"* see others do it, FIRST.. before, they do it themselves!)
I love, love, love cilantro, but struggle to grow it. I will definitely try the sandpaper scarification method this year! Thanks for another great video!
By the way... Seeds like to germinate in slightly acidic water as it softens the seed shells. I find it more gentle than sandpaper and get better results. An acidity of PH 5.5 seems to be right for most seeds. Seems to be great for cuttings too using the peat moss method but I haven't measured the acidity the moss creates in the water, although I know it makes it slightly acidic. I checked this with a PH Meter. I'll check what happens with moss if the packet I got manages to come back to life.
Yay my coriander germinated today, just checked. Hard to tell but all or nearly all sprouted between two cotton wool pads and 5.5 PH water. I put them in an old food tub with the lid on as a mini dark greenhouse for a few days. They look great. I'll plant then tomorrow. 😁
Yes, I did with footwear crushing method... it took 15-17 days to germinate... And only few seeds germinated . Ll try out sand paper method this weekend .
I agree. In the US, this plant is known due to the hispanic, and specially mexican influence. It is now even more popular due to other culture’s influence, like Indian cuisine and others.
i washed coriander seeds 2-3 times, soaked in water for abt 6 hrs, then washed, crushed and bundled in a cloth with a little cowdung and soil for two days.. most of them germinated😊
It’s called cilantro in Spanish, and since Mexico is close to the US, there is an influence in the language. In Canada it’s called cilantro and coriander both, seeds are called coriander
I bought some split seeds on Amazon meant for sprouting/microgreens and I soaked them in water for 8 hours and then put them on a damp paper towel in a ziploc bag and put them in the dark for 2 days and they were all sprouted.
I love your detailed videos with all the scientific concepts behind them. I have tried using your all tricks for Dhaniya (coriander/cilantro) - used sand paper, used aspirin water to soak for 2-3 hrs. etc. But I am not getting even a single germination. I am in US and I am using Daniya packet from Indian grocery store. What could be wrong? Any suggestions, please?
Great. Should be planning a lesson but this was a great distraction. Thank you. Off to the whole food shop. Never thought of buying whole bag of seed from a food store. Will save me money. Yeah!
THANX A MILLION. I was wondering y, despite breaking the seeds into half, my container had lil or no coriander growing. Let me try this new trick. 🙏🏻😊 Gave a 👍🏻 and subscribed too
I have planted the seeds 🍀 I can see a few shoots coming up. Unfortunately, I did use a roller because I didn’t see your suggestions. I will do another pot. Thank you for sharing’
I'm just about to plant my first cilantro seeds I didn't know that it's best when split into half. I'll try that soon thanks! Oh I have a question how do we get the seeds from the plant??? Does each plant produces seeds??

Thanks.great tips.just failed twice in growing corriander
Great Video. Thanks for the tips!
i have tried to plant coriander multitudes of times with no success. I will try with your method and hope for the best.
Also make sure to germinate on heat hariharan. I don't bother splitting the seeds, but coriander most definitely germinates at temperatures above 80F.
I'm unsure of why/how I am somehow, "unsubscribed" from your channel.. but, I can tell you- I have *NEVER* done so on purpose!

Veteran grower here but I'll try it, thanks.
I love, love, love cilantro, but struggle to grow it. I will definitely try the sandpaper scarification method this year! Thanks for another great video!

Thank goodness. I thought he was going to tell us to slice each in half!
And I HATE HATE HATE coriander, it tastes like SOAP!!!

Cilantro is the Spanish name for Coriander. In Malayalam it is Malli. I think in Hindi its called Dhanya.
I agree. In the US, this plant is known due to the hispanic, and specially mexican influence. It is now even more popular due to other culture’s influence, like Indian cuisine and others.

Same here, tried many times. All the time, the seeds start rotting. Should the top basket be touching water?
i washed coriander seeds 2-3 times, soaked in water for abt 6 hrs, then washed, crushed and bundled in a cloth with a little cowdung and soil for two days.. most of them germinated😊

Better follow “hardening off” process for all seedlings as discussed here th-cam.com/video/eLACnABG2LM/w-d-xo.html

Probably overwatering! Donot water the seeds daily.

I'm just about to plant my first cilantro seeds I didn't know that it's best when split into half. I'll try that soon thanks! Oh I have a question how do we get the seeds from the plant??? Does each plant produces seeds??
Yes after flowering every plant forms seeds. You can collect when they dry.
Nice method. Should coriander plants be under full sunlight on summer.? Thanks for the video.
Full sun and in summer preferably under a 50% shade net.
Thanks for the reply. Can it also be placed under the fruit trees with partial shades. Thanks
Yes
Thanks for the great advice .
Should we place the pot of coriander after sowing in sunlight or in shade before germination?
