      Ironically Lucas was seriously thinking about have Jones under the mask in the last scene in RotJ. But the studio felt that the reveal of Luke as half black would confuse some audience members or they would not accept an interracial hero even in 1983. Personally though I always felt that would have been f'n amazing, especially with the caliber of actor Jones is to have that scene with Hamill. Though we would have lost Hayden Christensen and Jake Lloyd, though I know some who would not consider that a loss. But also probably Matt Lanter's Anakin in Clone Wars, for other actors.

    The original prop lightsabers were very fragile, which is why the first movie had such a below average combat. Sir Alec Guinness was really a very good stage sword fighter. But the actor who played darth vader had a lot of trouble with mobility and vision. It was very challenging to film for Lucas but herein lies the reason star wars deserves its due as a breakthrough in film history.

      +Denis Eaton Not only were they very fragile (crystal & glass I believe), but they didn't have many replacements/ backups since Star Wars was operating on a shoestring budget.
      So basically, if they were swung too vigorously, or came into contact with each other, they would crack. And if that happened too much, they would have to cut this entire (crucial) scene! Especially since Lucas had already squeezed every (reluctant) penny out of 20th Century Fox that he was going to get for this expected "flop".

    Whenever i watch a new hope i love to imagine how it would look if it was made today. George probably intended or the obi wan vader fight to be more intense but because the two men were so old it was practically impossible for them to do fancy moves. Many fans including myself like to believe that during this fight vader and obi were battling mentally through the force meaning that what you were seeing upon screen was a small sum of what was actually happening. if you ever rewatch ep 4 take this perspective with you as it makes the fight much more interesting and enjoyable!

    • @blazzered2
      @blazzered2 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Don't let the age of both men fool you, the actor who played Vader was actually young and the actor who played Obi Wan had experience in sword fights and was trained to do sword fights in plays.
      I think I remember hearing somewhere that lightsabers were originally meant to be heavy, which is why Darth Vader and Obi Wan both fought two handed, and anytime the lightsaber was really used it was always two handed, with the only exception being when Luke first gets his and waves it around some.
      To stray away from this, they had Luke use the lightsaber one handed in some moments and they had Vader in Episode V fight with only one hand to make the lightsaber seem lighter, and this is when kendo was introduced, which is the fighting style lightsaber duels became based off of, to help improve the duels and then from that movie onward they wanted to keep making the duels faster and faster paced up until what we got in Episode III.

    James Earl Jones just did vaders voice. David Prowse was the man in the suit. If you watch behind the scenes shots of A New Hope, vader is just scottish. A note on the fight though and the recent explanation from Dave Faloni, when we get to the scene where you hear the flash back voice of obiwan saying, "you were my brother anakin", the scene fits even better now because Anakin didn't need a brother, he needed a father and that was taken from him with Qui_gons death and he found his father figure in the manipulation of palpatine and as a result, instead of anakin, vader now stands before obiwan

    The reason the original saber fight in New Hope is the way it is, was because the original sabers they used for that movie were made of glass, and were EXTREMELY fragile, to the point they shattered as soon as anything hit them, so when they filmed the final scene (the one we see in the movie), Bob Anderson and Alec Guiness had to make sure their sabers actually never touched.

    • @reidmason2551
      @reidmason2551 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Dave Prowse performed the original fight. Anderson came in with EMPIRE. And it shows in Vader's moves as well; Prowse's bulk made his movement much clunkier, whereas Anderson's lightsaber fighting is much more fluid. Even with better sword props, I don't think Prowse would have done much better in the original fight than he already did.

    This is my favorite fan edit/"movie" for Star Wars, and one of my favorite lightsaber duels among them all. It really bridges the prequels and the OT.
    Compared to the original fight scene from 1977, this one wasn't just better choreographed, but was far more emotional in context with Anakin and Obi-Wan's relationship in the prequels, which this original fight scene just didn't have. The last time Anakin and Obi-Wan saw each other, it was 19 years ago when they fought and Obi-Wan left Anakin for dead on Mustafar. Imagine the feelings that would be going through them both, through Anakin. Imagine his hatred and anger. They managed to convey those emotions so well, even though you couldn't see Vader's face. They showed it through the music and the way Vader fought. They perfectly captured how ruthless and aggressive with a lightsaber Vader is said to be, and even blended it with a bit of Anakin's old fighting style to show that Anakin was still in there. They also kept faithful to the fact that Vader couldn't lift his arms over his shoulders, which was a nice attention to detail.
    Also this makes Obi-Wan's sacrifice make more sense. Originally it looked like Obi-Wan just decided to let himself die in front of Luke, but here we see that Vader was slowly overpowering him. Obi-Wan couldn't win. He knew he couldn't win. He never planned on winning. From how he was talking to Luke before, he sounded like he knew he was gonna die. He took on Vader just to keep him distracted, knowing he wouldn't be walking away with his life. This adds so much more weight to his decision. He put himself in that situation just to keep the others safe.
    It also adds to the scene to not have Vader just kinda standing there with his lightsaber already ignited, as if patiently waiting for Obi-Wan or stumbling upon him. Here we see Vader actively hunting him down. We see his aggression and anticipation as Vader moved to intercept him, even before the fight started. We get a feeling for how badly he wants Obi-Wan taken care of. And we get that intimidation upon seeing Vader intercepting Obi-Wan (the doors behind Vader were still closing, showing he'd just arrived) and igniting his lightsaber in front of him.
    And that music... as it crescendos near the end, the final hate-filled stare Vader/Anakin gives Obi-Wan (considering the last time they saw each other), and those quotes... This actually made me tear up. As much as I love Star Wars, I don't think it's ever made me cry before, but this made me want to. They really nailed the tone and character so well in this scene, even better than the original movie did.

    I am enjoying watching all of the Star Wars content along with you. It’s refreshing seeing it from the perspective of someone younger who’s seeing it for the first time. I agree with many of the commenters saying that the fight is more emotional because you can refer back to the prequels and the lines they added from Ep.3. In regards to how slow and lumbering the original fight in Ep.4 is, Lucas originally wanted the sabers to feel like they were heavy and difficult to wield so they were choreographed that way. As the OT continued they realized that it would need to be more exciting so the pace of the fighting quickened eventually becoming what we see in the prequels. Keep it up and can’t wait till you get to Ep.6!

    One of the issues in the first movie is that they hadn't really perfected the sabers. They kept breaking if they hit them too hard. At least at first, the blades were spinning as well to make them reflect flashing light on the actors before they were rotoscoped.

  • @johnnyb100691

    In the original movie's defense, they had an incredibly low budget for the film. Fox gave George 7.5 million I believe to start and it all had to be on screen. All the unknown actors didn't get paid. George Lucas had to front a lot of his own money because no one believed in the project, so getting good fight choreography for the film was not a possibility. Also, as you said, both actors are older.

    James Earl Jones, an American actor, who won an Oscar for his portrayal of 1920's World Boxing Champion Jack Johnson, was chosen to overdub David Prowse's voice in the Vader costume. He was chosen because of his deep booming voice and classical tembre.

    Man this is so cool. The original version doesn't bother me because they were just at the beginning of creating a universe and hadn't figured everything out yet. it was also made so long ago...this might be sacrilege but I think it would be cool to redo the OT and prequels with clone war style animation

    One of the best things is that you can see when Vader senses Luke after ending Obi-Wan, and he starts towards him as the blast doors slowly close, and then we hear Obi-Wan tell him to run before Vader realizes who Luke is.

    There was almost an alterative Scene there when, Anakin lost almost all his limbs and was slowly falling slipping into the lava. The iconic scene where he was grabbing the ground and pulling him self up, Obi-Wan said " it was said you were going to destroy the Sith, not join them, bring balance to the force, not leave it to darkness" Hayden reaches out his hand ( which he does in the movie and mutters the words which are muted) and ask''s Obi-wan to " save me Master " and Obi-wan was going to reply " I will not... " in a softer tone ( < this is the part George wanted to add but the rest did not ). He declined to help him. That's why we see Obi-wan walking away from him and Anakin groaning and said his Iconic line " I hate you " Obi-wan then says " you were my brother Anakin, I loved you " < past tense cause he see's a dead man and all the wrongs he did.

    What i really enjoyed about this redone fight scene, is that you can really FEEL the aggression coming from Lord Vader. Like he's just smashing his saber into Obi Wan's trying to overpower him through brute strength...just pouring all of his hatred that has been building for years into his blows. And they really captured how Vader was more machine at that point...so his attacks aren't fluid..they are heavy, and brutal. But, I also liked the touch they added at the end...reminding us, that these two were close as brothers once...and that smile Obi Wan gives Vader at the end, always kills me. It's like Obi Wan needed to face Vader one last time..to have true closure, before becoming one with the Force.

    When they made ANH the studios expected it to fail so they had to cut some expenses (even with the cuts GL went over budget). I think they weren't able to hire a fight choreographer to make the duel better. You'll see Empire and Jedi both are much better. In terms of technology, by the time they got to the Prequels they were able to put in more bells and whistles also to enhance the duels. This is an awesome reimagining with what we can do today.

    The original trilogy was less of choreography and epic saber fighters and more about the emotions behind the fights. They then developed the lightsaber combat much more, and thus we have this recreation. So they combined the lightsaber combat with emotional effects.
    The ending definitely broke my heart, especially with the music that combined with the voices from Revenge of the Sith.

    The man who wanted to save his only love, but failed.

    It was slow in the movie because the blades were made out of glass, so the body builder playing Vader was told by Lucas not to make contact with the blades, to not break them.

    What gets me about the scenes, between Obi Wan and Vader...is that Obi Wan never intended to leave the Death Star alive. It was always his intent, to face his former apprentice one last time. Perhaps to gain some closure? And the smile he gives Vader at the end, yes Vader was consumed by hatred, but Obi Wan still viewed him as a friend. Oh, and the fact that they play Anakin's Dark Deeds when they come face to face...is also a nice touch. Also, you can clearly see...although slower, and more clunky...Vader still possesses the same frenzied, and ferocious fighting style of Anakin Skywalker..I'm glad they did that.

    This was a great remake of the fight scene. Plus the end part where Vader storms off(no punt intended) taking Obi Wan’s lightsaber as a final insult or show there’s they little spark of an akin inside showing honor to Obi wan as a keepsake.

  • @kamileon8536
    @kamileon8536 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Yes the force is flowing through them, but, remember that it’s because of this that determines the way they are fighting. All of Darth Vader’s strikes is to kill. He’s not holding back. Yes when they were younger they somersaulted, twirled their sabres. This scene is between 2 masters of the force and the movements are efficient and deadly like 2 master swordsman from feudal Japan. Obi wan didn’t need to fight at all, he knew already that if Vader struck him down he would transform, but Obi Wan is a fighter and wanted to show Vader that he was still a Jedi to be reckoned with. It wasn’t until Obi Wan saw Luke that brought him back to his senses. Awesome reimagining and worthy of being inserted into a new version of The Last Hope.

    Interesting story about David Prowse, the bodybuilder-turned-actor who played a lot of movie monsters including the body performance of Darth Vader in the entire OT (except for stunts). David became kind of ostracized by Lucasfilm and was disinvited from conventions over the years. There is a documentary about it that came out in 2015 called "I Am Your Father" that tells a bit about the controversy. It's worth checking out after you finish the OT.

    Amongst the reasons for the ... limited choreography of the original fight is the suit David Prowse was wearing to portray Vader. The original suit was very heavy and stiff, and basically kept him from lifting his arms much at all, definitely not past the shoulders, and was also difficult to see out of. Most of these issues were fixed in the shooting of Empire, hence the massive uptick in fight quality there

  • @BlackieNuff

    One of the cool things about this reimagined scene is how it foreshadows the duel between Luke and Vader on Bespin with Vader's dirty tricks of hurling things at his opponent.
