More than 2,000 years ago, the Greek philosopher, Plato, wrote a book, "The Republic", in which he expounded his concept of an ideal republic. The Chinese political system is the closest that a country can get to the ideal republic of Plato, where the members of the Communist Party of China are the guardians of the republic. The political leaders in China, like in the republic of Plato, are chosen in accordance with their merits and experience. This is unlike the case of the so-called democratic system in the US and other western countries where the political leaders are either clowns (actors), gangsters (business people and CIA agents), or liars (lawyers).
Interesting observation. However, I think that the genetic bell curve of human feeling dominates all things human. Everyone makes the same mistakes and learns from the same mistakes, over and over again until the mistakes are so well pronounced that people instinctively do the best part of what is being inscribed, not only in our history books, but upon our DNA. All of OUR mistakes are made in the environment human nursery that we call Earth. Every blast, every poisoning, every loud noisy hateful demonstration happens within the nursery. OUR only nursery!
@@dianabenobo Unless you are born in a country with a history more than 5000 years. You could learn from the long enough history and avoid many mistakes. Wisdom can make people better, and wisdom always comes from history.
There are plenty of examples but that information had been omitted from you by your own society. A major roadblock that deprives you of learning about others.

im amazed by how few views this wonderful video is getting. less than 10k views after 1 month the vid posted. Either the youtube algorithm did something to it, or the undereducated / ignorant West netizens can't digest such informative stuff.
It may also be the arrogance of the west, disdaining to see the content related to China. For example, Der Tagesspiegel wants to play up China's control over power, especially when Chinese characters indicate power, but it is written as a tree branch... The west is full of hostility to China, but it doesn't understand this opponent. It will eventually eat its own fruit
I fear it is the latter. Even intelligent, progressive Canadians seem unwilling to doubt their own superficial Prime Minister on matters pertaining to China. I ask myself, is it ignorance or racism - possibly both. For holiday viewing, I also recommend the 1966 AMERICAN movie THE SAND PEBBLE. That very long movie together with this very succinct interview would allow any thoughtful person to understand the folly of Western leaders respecting China.
The interviewer behaved like a perfect gentleman and should be commended. Sadly, he seems to be in the minority when it comes to Western interviewers on the subject of Sino-US relations.
Well, as a Chinese, I think the US election is much more interesting to watch than a reality TV show.. We like to sit back and enjoy this show, but don’t really want this kinda shows to happen in our own country. We prefer to have professional people handling professional things, not a popular personnel standing at a podium spewing BS... it’s true that we can’t change the ruling party in China, but we are constantly changing policies. From a few rounds of US election that I have seen so far, yes American people change their ruling parties, but they couldn’t change policies: public education still sucks, gun issues, no universal affordable healthcare, no federal backed maternity leaves, no easy retirement plans,, the list goes on. Americans can criticize their leaders; however, nothing has done/changed for a very long time..
When the US moved from Republicans to the Democrats, old policies were shredded and started all over again. Or vice-versa. So much money and time spent on disputes and criticism. In the meantime China had moved and delivered 2 rounds of their 5 year-plan results.
@@과자나무-x9p It's really not at all amusing when one takes the individual democratic responsibility toward creating and maintaining a more perfect union among equals. It is disturbing for me to observe the abuse of the constitutionally guaranteed right of free speech being abused by what seems to be a reckless sociopath and sociopath disciples! To observe is so compelling that I tire of being allways on guard.
I want to say something on the topic of racism, especially Western racism that has been troubling the US. I believe one major issue is the lack of respect, or putting personal freedom (freedom of speech) over respect. Emphasis of individualism over social responsibility. In China, most people look to the minority races as just "another Chinese". They are not labeled as "weak, deprived, crime prone". They are treated as part of the big family, and with respect.
Exactly! You never ever hear from media in China bad-mouthing other culture and people. And if an Han Chinese married with someone from minority group, they usually like to register their child as minority since they will receive more support from government, like minority were never subjected to one child policy and get extra points in uni-entrance exam (gaokao) .
I guess racism is just part of human nature sadly. You see, those misfit kids in schools around the world are usually bullied by the “normal” kids. In China minorities are considered “another Chinese” because they are minor enough in population and similar enough with the majority.
@@jfi_ agree, racism is part of human nature. But degree of racism matters. I don't mind if someone not liking me, it is perfectly OK, but it is very wrong if this person openly insult or even assault me simply because of my ethnicity, even if he doesn't know me at all personally and I havnt done anything to make him offensive. In China, You rarely to see Chinese attacking and openly insulting any minority people, if they don't like people from some place, they maybe badmouthing them among their own circle of friends and in the public, just keep away from them. There are kind people everywhere, but my problem with western people, especially American, is that their media often openly bad-mouthing and insult other cultural and people, and many westerners seem to be very easily stired up to be violent haters.
after 2000 years china still has 56 distinct cultures. after 200 years the red indians were wiped out in north america - u just had ONE job and u still screwed it up.
@Tani J They are pretty wiped out. Virtually culturally extinct. The reservations are pretty poor with no significant economic development. Few speak tribal language. The Uygurs on the other hand have a surging population, retains their language and culture, have a booming economy, and have a great media presence. Many top China actresses are Uygur.
@Tani J thats right, most of their guys got wiped out, only the girls get "mixed in". also why #BLM victims are mostly black men. you sound like a girl, apologies if i got it wrong.
North America and China cannot be campared, because the North American continent has been relevant for less than 500 years where China has been a part of the world model since the first settlement in the area. China should be compared to Europe, the mediteranean area and India (Overall western Eurasia) where in all those examples there are hundreds of cultural groups.
As a member of a minority ethnical group in China, I never felt racism when I grew up. I spoke my own language and went to a proper ethnical language school. Both of my parents worked as government employees back then. I remember every holiday they will get bonus from the government, more than Han people. And they could have a second child, but my father who is a CPC member decided to support the policy by only having me, a girl. After a few years my mother decided to quit her job in the government and started doing business. I started going to regular public school after two years in the language school. I got extra care from the teacher because I was bad with chinese language. The teacher would take me to his home and cook me and his daughter lunch. Then he would read stories to us and explain the characters. He encouraged me to read and make small speech in front of the class. He encouraged me to communicate with the kids and asked the kids to be extra nice to be because I am a minority. He did all these without anybody asking him! He is just one of many Han chinese that I learned to love! I loved my neighbors who always, always share good food with me. Back in 80s we were all poor, but I always get invites to all sorts of parties! Han chinese people taught me what is "love"!
Prof Zhang went straight to the core issue of the theoretical foundation of liberal democracy, that voters are rational. I agree with him completely on his points. I'd like to add some thoughts. Most democracies actually have mechanisms to safeguard such inherent flaws of the voters. One of them is to devolve the power to local governments as much as possible, so that the main issues are local so the voters can understand and vote on (more or less) rationally. I think this did work to some extent, especially two hundreds years ago when the economies were mostly agrarian and people didn't travel too much. This mechanism is seriously challenged by globalisation and the advent of social media. I don't think the situation will get better; it will only get worse.
This is an essential hour of discussion for anyone who wishes to understand, report or comment on current tensions between China & the West - as largely generated by the words & actions of Donald Trump & Boris Johnson, with support from Canada & Australia.
Thanks to CCP, Chinese nationalism is capped and the country remains rational even under constant provocations from US. CCP collectively deserve a World Peace Award.
Hopefully more western people can see this so that they can learn more facts and philosophies about China from Professor Zhang who is really terrific and erudite!
What a civilized exchange of ideas. Let’s assume that Mr. Zhang is only 50% truthful or honest in his answers, for me, base on d questions, average Canadian is very ill informed about China. Seems like our main stream media’s is intensionally presenting China in a negative light. My thanks to Munk n d interviewer. Time well spent.👍👍👏👏👏
You shouldn't assume, you can be certain China is 100% honest when they are expressing their own views. It is China's views but your views of China are born out of ignorance. Only arrogance and close mindness closes the eyes and shut the ears.
I can assure you, Mr Zhang is 100% true in his answers, he is also sharing in China to young people. Maybe Chinese were not so good at expressing themselves but we are trying to speak out more, to be honest, it’s so hard to hear any true stories outside of China 🇨🇳

The two different systems produced two different results. Electors in the United States are called politicians, while those in China are called leaders. Under the American electoral system, the elected politician is almost entirely dependent on his funding and propaganda efforts. The voters rely solely on luck to choose a qualified ruler of the country. But in China, national leaders are elites who have emerged from among the many elites after years of experience at the grassroots level. They are well aware of the problems in the country and the needs of the people. In China, the funds raised for elections in the United States are called bribery. But in any case, it is most important to find shoes that fit your feet. China has never marketed its system to the outside world.
This is very good. Great host. He’s here to listen, but he still asks good and targeted questions, and the listeners submitted great questions too. I know good content isn’t going to magically change how Americans are, but I do wonder how much better our political conscious would be if our talking heads were questioned like this. Most of our politicians don’t even know what communism is, but they sure do hate it. They don’t know what capitalism is, but they sure do love it.
This is the only dialogue that a Western media genuinely try to understand China. Unfortunately it will only be watched by those who has an open view about China.
Success is through learning from the best practices, adapted and adjusted to your own believe and culture. As the saying goes CHANGE is only thing that is constant. Thus China is applying the above, while others felt they are the best and will stick to their 1950 mentality.
The fundamental thing that the world NEED to understand that is: 1. Today's China is not the old days of China. 2. No matter what you try to name it CPC or CCP, it is a Meritocratic System selected by the Chinese People in China, it is NOT just the type of political ideology of the west. This means to condemn the party, equal to condemn ALL the Chinese in China and on the broader world. China is an amalgamation of civilization, and it is constantly evolving and the west can’t pinpoint it, neither to use a narrow perspective to look at it. 3. There is NO argument and NO doubt that China is Rising and MOST of the Chinese in the world are Happy about it. Therefore, any party(people) try to stir disputes in the affairs of the Chinese territory, sovereignty, companies, the people in China, is equally creating a ripple effect of conflicts and disturbance of international peace because Chinese families are ALL inter-connected in an ultra-complex system in the greater community ALL around the world.
I love the interview where there is an intelligent and respectful exchange of ideas. Regrettably most Canadians would probably want the host to be more aggressive in his attack on China's system of governance.
As a mainlander of China, even though not agree many views in the comments, I appreciate your empathy and compassion for China’s issues instead of making judgment by stereotypes.
I'm only done with Prof Zhang's section but felt obliged to leave a comment. I am so impressed by the respect and professionalism of the host who asks meaningful questions and gives his guest ample time to respond. For an average Chinese the last 40 years have been the best years in its last 2000 years history and they give credit of this to their political system and thus have no desire to change it.
If that is the case, that's pretty sad for China for its long history, you don't think the Tang Dynasty had better times, relatively I mean. In animal kingdom, animals such as hyenas, chimpanzees, elephants, wolves and lions etc etc have rules, individuals in the group has to follow rules in order to co-exist. Humans are more sophisticated, therefore, we have more rules so that we can organise ourselves to form societies and nations. When westerners asked for freedom of individuals such as not wearing masks to protect themselves and the communities, they are actually regressing into the most basic form of human behaviours tens of thousands years ago.
I think Professor Zhang was quite generous in his critique of western liberal democracy. If only public opinion played such an important role! In the US most elections boil down to telling a bunch of lies and getting your base riled up over various social issues. Then no matter which party wins they all serve the interests of the wealthy no matter what public opinion might be.
I think his point that really strikes at the core of the issue and makes sense to me is, why are we electing people with no prior experience to the highest position to lead the country. You don't ask a chef to lead an engineering project, or a janitor to command a ship, sometimes you do, but rarely. But democracy just randomly elects a person like Trump, Modi, or Boris and of suspect experience and ask them to lead. It's no wonder more often than not it ends in a disaster. Democracy could work but it need be revised such that the candidates for the position of leadership are reserved for people who has clearly proven themselves to be able to handle the job.
In China, we never believed there is a perfect man or thing. There won't be a perfect system. Being modest, and don't be aggressive.(Soz, I can't find a better English words to translate it). Bruce Lee once said: be like water. Water can carry or destroy a boat, it doesn't have a shape but it can turn into any shapes. That's flexibilities, also one thing has its good side and bad side. We usually use the water and boat to describe the government and the public since at least hundred years ago. This is one of the best dialogues I've ever seen, suitable questions and wise answers. Great tempo and many respects to each other. I wanna say one thing about the freedom. It is not wise to hang out at 2am in the US, but u can sleep on the street in China at anytime anywhere. You have freedom to do anything as an individual, but if all of you did whatever you want. As a result, you are all affected, is it necessary to force you to stay at home. Eastern people under the effects of confucianism would put the profit of the public at first place sometimes. It is wise to remember that water can beat the bullets. As a non-believer, I know the Christians believe the God is perfect, none of us is. Then why not learn from different cultures why not accept different voices. Isn't that somehow unsacred?
Socrates was very critical of democracy. He believed that only people who thought about issues rationally and deeply should be allowed near a vote. We have forgotten the distinction between an intellectual democracy and a democracy by birthright. We have given the vote to all without connecting it to wisdom. The result that Socrates feared most was demogoguery. This is why we've had questionable leaders like Donald Trump, Justin Trudeau, Boris Johnson, Scott Morrison, Jair Bolsonaro, etc.
BLM is one of the issues Prof. Zhang points out as examples for the lack of real freedom of speech many western countries are giving away for the sake of political correctness. Diversity and feminism as well as gender equalities being other examples.
Giving people the right to vote neither solve people's problems nor meet their needs in daily life, it only gives you a illusion of being a decision maker, however de facto Oligarchies dominate.
@@watson7042 very true and insightful. And even if you have the freedom of saying anything, it will be meaningless if the government simply ignore it. one thing that puzzles me is that why the west doesn't understand a simple fact: the time of colonial era has long gone. the perpetual wars against those small, weak nations would not bring you wealths and prosperities any more. instead, sincerely helping the development of those nations will help to develop western countries in the long run. think about this way: more those poor, weak nations get developed, the size of the global market would be getting bigger. the west would also be benefited with enlarged, enriched market, financially and economically. sure the percentage of shares of the new global market for the west would decrease because more countries are getting developed, but overall the west would get more business opportunities, spend less on wars of deaths, which in turn will directly benefit further development of western countries themselves.

Great comment. Thank you
Can’t agree more. Great insight.
Can't agree more. Impressive.
@@dianabenobo Unless you are born in a country with a history more than 5000 years. You could learn from the long enough history and avoid many mistakes. Wisdom can make people better, and wisdom always comes from history.
Perhaps by example, we could learn some thing from China as a shared interest and improving the lives throughout the world.
For Western countries, especially US, self reflection is not in its gene.

im amazed by how few views this wonderful video is getting. less than 10k views after 1 month the vid posted.
Americans can criticize their leaders; however, nothing has done/changed for a very long time..
it's fun to watch, as long it stays there across the pacific ocean.
When the US moved from Republicans to the Democrats, old policies were shredded and started all over again. Or vice-versa.

Great point! Ppl have no idea about respect. They can only learn it in a hard way. The lack of education, single parent family are the factors

We have 56 ethnic groups and we are all one family.

Rational dialogue, respect! very professional host!

China tried and failed to spread communism around the world during the Cold War. We beat them back and now they imperfectly copy our system.
This is very good. Great host. He’s here to listen, but he still asks good and targeted questions, and the listeners submitted great questions too. Most of our politicians don’t even know what communism is, but they sure do hate it. They don’t know what capitalism is, but they sure do love it.

The fundamental thing that the world NEED to understand that is:

For an average Chinese the last 40 years have been the best years in its last 2000 years history and they give credit of this to their political system and thus have no desire to change it.
If that is the case, that's pretty sad for China for its long history, you don't think the Tang Dynasty had better times, relatively I mean.
This has to be one of the best debunker for US smearing campaign if one can first put away preconceptions and bias.

If you want to know China then come to China to see it by yourself ,do not learn China from the western media. If you come to China you'll see how peaceful and kind are Chinese people . China was No.1 super power for a very long time in the past thousand years , but we never invade other countries . Why we must do it right now . We suffered too much in the War about hundred years ago , so we know the feeling. All that we want is that China must be an united country as it always be in the most of time.
one thing that puzzles me is that why the west doesn't understand a simple fact: the time of colonial era has long gone. the perpetual wars against those small, weak nations would not bring you wealths and prosperities any more. instead, sincerely helping the development of those nations will help to develop western countries in the long run. think about this way: more those poor, weak nations get developed, the size of the global market would be getting bigger. the west would also be benefited with enlarged, enriched market, financially and economically. sure the percentage of shares of the new global market for the west would decrease because more countries are getting developed, but overall the west would get more business opportunities, spend less on wars of deaths, which in turn will directly benefit further development of western countries themselves.

He has a powerful pair of rose coloured glasses to look at Chinese history and the PRCs "inheritance" of that history.
Why then did the _Republic of China_ 🇹🇼 lose the mainland to _People's Republic of China_ 🇨🇳 and had to flee to Formosa (Taiwan)? The Kuomintang administration of ROC had massive wealth (they taxed peasants heavily) they had superior weapons and superior numbers over the communists. Yet they still *lost the mainland* to dirt-poor, heavily outnumbered, ill-equipped, starving Communist peasants and had to flee to Taiwan?
This demonstrates KMT's *gross incompetence* in their right to rule the mainland, as well as supports the communists right to rule the mainland.
@@Shenzhou. uh huh, wasn't talking about kmt, they have a right to rule Taiwan. The PRC has no relationship to imperial China. As far as quality of rule, Taiwan was having a peaceful day on June 4th, 1989, what was happening in tienanmen Square that day? Maybe both parties deserved to lose China, that was a long time ago though.
@@trivialgravitas9581 Why does KMT have the right to rule, but not the CPC? During the Chinese Civil War, the KMT, with all their wealth (taxed from peasants) their superior weapons and superior numbers, still *lost the mainland* to dirt-poor, heavily outnumbered, ill-equipped, starving Communist peasants and had to flee to Formosa (Taiwan) then why does KMT still deserve to rule the mainland?
@@Shenzhou. never said they did, you're the one who seems to care overmuch. This is childish whataboutism that relies on PRC slant of history.
Why do you care? I'm an historian so I
watched this propaganda mouthpiece to get a sense of what china thinks. Why are you so adamant at such an unsubtle and simplistic point?
@@trivialgravitas9581 China has 5000 years of history and is among the world's oldest "continuous" civilization still alive today, whereas other ancient civilizations like Mesopotamia, Rome and Egypt have since succumbed to history. China has witnessed the birth and death of various other nations, the rise and fall of numerous other empires, yet China has survived the violent passage of time to modern times relatively intact, whereas even Rome eventually crumbled.
China has always been under the authoritarian rule (and we still are today) of emperors and the imperial court, because that's how China has been successfully governed for millennia. Not all countries have to adopt Western democracy to be successful and China is living proof of this.
Very seldom have I seen a western moderator so professional and respectful to the guest. Most western hosts or interviewers are antagonistic and not interested to listen to the opinions of their guests especially non- western ones. This Canadian host is so different.
Very reasonable and intelligent, people can learn from your about your history, viewpoints of history, politics and world relations. By the way translators seems to be very successful in their careers.
But that's not the case with me obviously:)! America have given me a lots Material or thoughts wise. I love her for that and I'm proud of my heritage! I hope both countries will progress to a point in 20, 30 and long after I'm gone and see
