You literally could have done so many things with that character but no, you had to kill him off in the cheapest way possible. This is why we can't have nice things, Joss. I wish they had somehow left Kirk stick in the matrix, forever immortalized in a happy rip of energy, traveling the Universe. Knowing that Kirk is still out there somewhere right now. THAT would have been far better!!
Interesting idea, but he wouldn't have been doing anything (Not quite clear how Picard dreaming inside the Ribbon could have saved everything in the real universe that had just died); Ideally the GENERATIONS villain should have been an version type of Kirk as cropped up a few times in the series - ideally THE ENEMY WITHIN guy who had grown a hundred years older in the real universe while his good half was in timeless nirvana. Kirk dying in GENERATIONS was nearly as bad as him being brought back by JJ Abrams as a cypher
lucky that they found a cure for death in that movie that could be supplied on an almost industrial scale and thus rather took the edge off any threatening situation in the franchise. Sure, characters died and revived in the series and the films, but now it could be remedied readily with a dose of Khan-blood.
