I was privileged to study under Master Kanei Uechi on Okinawa at the Futenma Dojo in 1973.

Thank you for this awesome footage! I wish I could of trained in the past like this before Karate went international and became a sport.

You can still train like this. Many Uechi dojos are not interested in sport karate and still train on wood floors using the exact movements you see here in this video.
My sensei, Master Bob Bethony has a dojo just like this and still trains very much to these exact standards. Just go looking for a dojo in your area or if you would like, message me and I will try to find one in your area if I have any knowledge of it.

This video was in 1978. The youngest boy in the film moves live a Shinjo.
Kiohide was my age at the time which was around 26 years old.
Kiohide is the tall gent with long hair.
The next one is Narihiro,Kiohide's younger brother with LOTS of hair.
The boy has great form and faster than the shutter of the camera. When you watch it over and over you can see the kicks full extensions!
I would love to know if this little fellow is still studying .

Kiohide Shinjo was also about the same age. Actually he is a little over 3 months older than me.

A lot of karate practitioners could learn from this speed. Fighting happens fast, and if you get lazy and practice slow all the time, you won't be able to make it work.

Who is that kid performing sanseiryu?! WOW!

The " kid " is Kiohide Shinjo. Notice how quickly he changes direction and how fast he covers distance? He throws an extra little step into his transitions. The video is a treasure. Thank you to the person posing.

The young boy isn't Kiohide. Kiohide is the tall 27 years old.

@@arcticwanderer2000 I know that. By " kid " I didn't mean the very young boy.I met Shinjo in 1973-4 when he and three other Okinowans visited our dojo in NYC. Took me three months to walk without a limp.

@@menachembenyakov I just looked up on my wall at my Uechi certificates and see my Shodan certificate was from Aug. 1974. Did you take part in the Dan testing that took place that day?

@@menachembenyakov I remember the testing had been on hold for awhile waiting for the Okinawans to come. Shinjo, Yanamine, Nakahatsu and Takamiyagi were the ones who came if I remember right, I must say Shinjo had the most impressive side kick I had ever seen.

I do not know but my guess is that he most likely is a younder Shinjo brother. I agree ...he is awesome...his form is excellent and he moves like someone from the Kadeno dojo.

In my opinion master Uechi's younger brother Kansei looks just like his Dad. I think Kanei looks more like his mom. If you have a copy of the Uechi Kihon there is a family picture with Kanei,Kansei and three sisters along with their mom ,who naturally is Kanbun's wife.
    Do I know you Steve?

Yes that is me. There was about 5 or 6 guys that worked out every afternoon, Monday through Friday from 2:00 - 4:00. I stayed in Ishikawa City about one hour north of Futenma by bus. Daily I would ride the bus and workout in the afternoons. Then I would hang around until the evening workouts from 6:00 - 9:30 or so.
One afternoon a big truck came with a lot of boxes. There were two "KIHON" books per box. We formed a chain up to Sensei's home and then unloaded the truck. AHHHHH so many memories.
